Issue Review

I don't like hero vs hero battles, but - at least - this one has an air of "what's going on?"
And once you find out what IS going on, it loses some of it's punch.

That Shalla-Bal must be one hot piece of ace! Had The Surfer already forgotten that Doom stole his power a while back?

  Kez Says:

Oh yeah, the Silver Surfer sure is noble. Willing to kill 4 people to get laid. :/ Man I hate that guy.

  Drax Says:

Almost ten years after his introduction, they still don't know how to use the Surfer effectively and not caricature as either naively stupid or pettily violent.

This was a Silver Surfer story guest starring the Fantastic Four.

When reading the "Shalla-Bal is now the wife of Doctor Doom!" page, it sealed the 2 stars rating. Stupid plot incoming. I hate the Surfer. He brings nothing good. Except that one time with Galactus. But excepting that, he just plain sucks. After ten years, as Drax wrote. Goddammit.

I feel the Silver Surfer is misused as well. However, I did enjoy the first few stories of his own mag. Hopefully things will getbetter for him.

Holy shitsnacks! Doom is one evil sumbitch!

Surfer is such an insufferably arrogant hypocrite. He's always going on and on about how humans are so violent, yet he's happy to go on a murder spree to get what makes him happy. I would love for that barrier to be gone so that he can be less of a whiny bitch. And how does he even know that is his real girl? Did he not just see that Doom is able to create robotic replicas?
Also why do the Four even bother fighting him? They should just wait around until his crisis of conscience hits him like it always does, since that's the only way he's ever stopped.

Man, guess I'm the only one who likes the Silver Surfer.

  He's my favorite hero.

One of my many complaints about the FF is that they have extremely formulaic fights: Torch goes in solo and loses while the others talk about him losing, Thing and woman get randomly `beaten` in a way that doesn't actually make sense, Reed flails around and then gets a soliloquy out if the villain. Oh look, it was all a big misunderstanding! Or, same fight again, but now FF is `angry` or something and end the same exact fight in 2 panels.

If you don't consider the Surfer to be a main character, he's fine. Just another pawn that Doom moves around the board. We can all see that the surfer is powerful but super dumb, so why shouldn't Doom exploit him?

  Shinderu Says:

With Starlin, Englehart and Gerber Marvel had some great writers in this era, who gave their characters some actual depth. Sadly there were also guys like Len Wein.

No point in rehashing the above comments; I'm not real thrilled about this arc either, especially if it ends up being robots. DOOM's plan isn't horrible (though he can and has done much better than this), but the Surfer should know far better than this. For all the talk of integrity and nobility he spouts every time we see him, he's just like any other guy; he thinks with his small head (or whatever the heck he's got, and no I'm not asking) instead of the one on his shoulders.

2 stars, and hopefully a pre-nup agreement for Shalla Bal.
