Issue Review
   November 7, 2016
The story is utter daftness (alien steals Hulk's shadow?!) but Len Wein tells it really, really well. Some lovely prose. And the ongoing sub-plot with Thunderbolt Ross, Betty Ross and Glenn Talbot picks up pace with a murder and a crazy cliff-hanger. All good. 7/10

More "ironic" nonsense totally aped from the anthology books. That silly cover did bring a smile to my face, however--"Who's your daddy, Hulk?"

The subplots in this issue were a lot more interesting than the main story. It was also saved a little by the ending.

Was this a text book or a comic.

You'd think by this point people would realise that if you just left the Hulk alone your stuff wouldn't get trashed.

I'm really not liking this Armbruster guy. Too much shoot first, think later.

I really liked the comments section of the magazine since they are talking about issue 181 where they talk about wolverine and there is even a guy that mentions that when they revive the X-Men they should definitely include Wolverine amongst them. Gave the Magazine a third star just for that.

Damn. Cold blooded Armbruster. The whole thing with the shadow was silly. Interested to see what will happen with Talbot.

This is the fourth time Bruce "died". I only know this because someone liked one of my comments where I spoke of the third time he supposedly perished.

I was all set to give this one 2 ** because the shadow monster was dumb, and the way he was defeated felt rushed, and like a cop out, but that last page was unexpected and I bumped my grade up to 3 **.

You'd think that the U.S. Military would know better than anyone that you aren't going to accomplish anything shooting at the Hulk. The moment they opened the door and saw the Hulk they should have just said "You nap for as long as you like and we'll keep driving".

C'mon guys, really? We're going to start playing with Peter Pan logic with the shadows and stuff? I mean I could see the alien pretending to be Hulk's shadow and him just being too dumb to know better, but to actually make it true?! And not only does Hulk not cast a shadow, but the shadow itself casts shadows in a number of panels. And I really don't understand how it was beaten. It was fine in the bright sunny day, but as soon as some lightbulbs hit it at night he dies?

  Johnny Darkness Says:

Some good writing and other elements, bogged down by a crappy villain. I liked everything without the shadow.

I think Betty Talbot has the least defined appearance of any major supporting character.

It's sad when the best part of the issue is the letters page.

The stuff with the supporting cast was very interesting and I'm interested in what's going to happen next, but I simply cannot give this more than two stars. That shadow bs was the dumbest villain Hulk has ever had, and 99% of his villains are dumb...

  Russ Says:

Recommended listening for this story: What else? "Shadow Dancing" by Andy Gibb. Yeah, I know.

They must've been low on ideas if they had to recycle an alien monster from the Marvel/Atlas pantheon of watered-down horror. Kaa's first appearance in Strange Tales #79 was a slightly better story than this cheesecake; at least the first story offered a better explanation on how those shadows were able to function, but all those rules went out the window here. Sure, it may have been interesting to have a villain the Hulk simply couldn't punch, but Kaa was still a pretty lame villain.

And Col Armbruster? That ending was pretty savage. I get that he's trying to do his job and help safeguard the country, but that's still a respected American scientist! Ross could get a little insane with his determination to stop the Hulk, but he'd never resort to outright murder (I don't think.....)

2 stars, but the way they showed Ross and the Talbots on vacation and reasonably content with themselves, you get the idea something really bad is going to happen to one of them very soon....
