A grim change-of-pace tale. IM in a battle zone. With innocent blood on his hands. Grim. Effective. 7/10

Issue Synopsis
During the Vietnam War, Stark delivered a prototype cannon to a black ops unit on a questionable Mission. While there as Iron Man, the unit was attacked and Iron Man orders the cannon to be fired. During his combat with an enemy jet, he falls into the jungle and stumbles into a village destroyed by his cannon. Rescuing the lone survivor, he carves the word "Why" into the ground.

I enjoyed that. The evolution of Tony Stark's character has been very well put together.

Nice introspection. I'm always surprised by how much blind children or people there are near every single event...

Tony starts to regret his past weapons dealing. Good story.

I appreciated the sentiment here a lot, but the execution...ugh.

Such a great story summarizing Stark's life up to now, and the moral was good as well.

Well that seemed like a load of BS. While the war was going on Marvel had no problem having their heroes wind up in Vietnam from time to time to help take out the red menace, but now that it's over and it's widely regarded as a waste of time, resources, and lives, Iron Man knew it all along.
If this story took place "months" after Tony became Iron Man, as he states, then that would mean that Stark Industries was still churning out death machines for another decade before Tony had a change of heart, so it couldn't have affected him THAT deeply.
Other stupid things: No nose on Iron Man, but he still has the head flaps; The return of shrapnel destroying Tony's heart if he can't get a charge ASAP; blind kid (who is a surprisingly good shot) learns English is record time from a man that spends most of his time ignoring that he's even there.

@duncanm: This story is a flashback, probably during a time when Tony had to plug in to keep his heart going (so, before that transplant). His faceplate had also been redesigned a couple of times. I'm assuming this recollection happened a little while ago, too, because isn't Iron Man pursuing Firebrand and the Black Lama in between dimensions at the end of last issue?

Other than that, I agree with most of the others: excellent story. While war is a necessary evil to protect our people from the forces that would kill them because their culture and ideology is different, it's a pretty ugly thing that does harm the innocent people who have no interest or bearing on the fight. And there's always the escalation factor. If you bring a bigger gun to the fight, the enemy is going to concentrate its resources on neutralizing that gun, or bring something in that's even bigger. That's a main part of what Tony was talking about that made him think twice; those soldiers became priority targets because they were protecting his weapon. The enemy killed them to prevent use of that weapon because, well, it's their job to protect themselves and their side. Comics are filled with stories where our side essentially does the same thing. And part of what Tony was trying to convey was, where does it end?

3 stars. Recommended listening: "Long Time Gone" by Crosby, Stills and Nash.
