First half is action-driven, second half is story arc-driven. Mixture is inelegant, but fine. Some things fall into place a bit too conveniently, but it doesn’t mar the enjoyment much. 5/10

Letters page mentions a Fu Manchu series set in the 30s with art by Frank Brunner that I don't believe ever came out. I'd love to see that.

This is one of those issues where it's very readable and pretty enjoyable for the genre ... but it's just so cookie cutter formulaic. Shang-Chi tries to do something "normal" and has some philosophical musings about how unenlightened westerners are and how co-opted his heritage has become ... assassins jump out of nowhere and Shang-Chi beats them up ... Sir Denis and Blackjack tell Shang-Chi they're on Fu Manchu's trail ... Shang-Chi refuses to help them ... Shang-Chi saves Sir Denis and Blackjack from Fu Manchu's clutches ... Fu Manchu's plans are utterly foiled but somehow it's all how he expected it because he knew his son was going to do this ... the above describes EVERY SINGLE KUNG FU STORY EVER.

I can't help but reminisce on the Howard issue of Quack Fu.

I like the way Shang-Chi thinks when he fights. Refreshing to be reading him again.

Thank the gods that Shang-Chi is wearing that head band, because otherwise I would have had no clue who was who when he was fighting the swordsman. Usually a good idea to not have a minor character drawn exactly the same as the protagonist. And I'm not being racist! Look at those designs side by side! Same hair, same face, same rippling muscles under orange skin.
It would be nice for a change if Shang-Chi wasn't so condescending to Western society. Yeah, I get it, the Chinese had some great ideas. Also try to remember that it created Fu Manchu who taught you everything you know about your culture.

The Shang-Chi formula is starting to wear out its welcome.

Yeah, except for the amusing little twist at the end, this was pretty much every Shang-Chi story I've read up to this point. How long did the 1970s "Martial Arts Madness" last anyway? 2 stars

I can't even give it 2. I mean, it's the same premise, the same villain, the same supporting players, and the "twist" was blowing up Mt. Rushmore . . . . That's like something out of a Hanna Barbera cartoon.

This was such a good series when it was fresh.

Somehow, the artists made George Washington look bored instead of noble. Maybe that's how they felt after drawing this issue?

Still, not a bad little filler. (BTW--I'm reading these and a batch of Defenders together because they arrived recently in MU.)

Just barely makes the Three Star level.
