Issue Review
   November 14, 2016
An utterly absorbing story, with great characters and lots of action.
This is Man-Thing at his most dynamic and heroic. It's cool.
And there's a killer cliffhanger.
A comic book I did not want to be over.

I prefer the way Ezekiel looks on the cover. He appeals to me more that way. Wonder why...

This is an outstanding issue of Man-Thing. Granted, the cover is a tad misleading.

I think the art in this looks fantastic.

Some of the best Ploog art so far on this series!

  Great art, it felt cartoony.

Man-Thing has become the one horror title I always enjoy.

The only thing that would improved Ploog's art on this issue would have been making it black and white. You can tell the colorist was having a hard time figuring out what to do with this.

Not sure why people liked this one. Kind of pointless.

  Maybe it's the fresh air.
Maybe it's Maybelle.
Maybe it's Maybelline?
Nah, it's definitely meth.

Reading this in the Marvel essentials, that's how I got to enjoy it.

A bitter old woman who's spirit reaches out from the grave to murder her man's pup? Move over Thanos and Dr Doom. Maybelle is officially the most evil villain so far in the order.
When Zeke and Maybelle first meet Man-Thing they are quite obviously terrified, so why didn't that make him fly into a rage and attack them? It seems a little inconsistent. And it's not exactly like their pure hearts were radiating out to him or something.

Gerber and Man-Thing just belong together. It's the perfect stage for his weirdness, plus Ploog's art is a perfect fit.

This was a wonderfully creepy story, even if it didn't make a lot of sense. I mean, I have no idea what that tree had against Zeke. And speaking of Zeke, is this a part of the swamp we haven't seen before? I had no idea there were any residents here!

Even so, leave it to Steve Gerber to make something this weird and disjointed work so well. Zeke and Maybelle were the type of couple that made you wonder why they stayed married for so long. And Zeke had a couple of very intriguing lines here: "Shucks Maybelle....I may not like ye much, but I still love ya." and "Ain't never seen its like in 20 years in this here swamp!" Does that mean there was another Man-Thing years ago?

3 stars. @TheAmazingGatorMan: Dude, Man-Thing got yet another one of your minions! Guess he just doesn't like alligators.

There are so many things that this book does well, art, prose, mood, a fresh setting, the list goes on. But my one gripe about this series is an overarching one: it is virtually impossible to to identify with or otherwise care about a literally mindless protagonist.

I gave this one a fourth star because it could have been an issue of Vault of Horror. Ploog here is channeling not only Will Eisner but Jack Davis and Graham Ingles.

Four stars.
