Lots of long speeches. And soul searching. And Red Skull plotting and killing. That's it. The girlfriends don't come off very well here. Sam and Steve's ladies are primarily concerned with being negative and unsupportive about what the guys do: Being superheroes. Kinda uninteresting to read that. 5/10

Overall this was pretty good. However, I have decided to knock a star off to protest how annoyed I am with how Sharon has become lately. She used to be a strong character but now she is just a generic Marvel silver age female. Quitting SHIELD was bad for her.

I like how successful the Red Skull is in this comic. He finally seems really dangerous.

1974 sounds like 2000-2015... I guess nothing's really changed... Presidents that swear one thing and meant another, oil company profits at record highs, layoffs, violence and a shrinking dollar.

Lots of stuff in this one. This will have SPOILERS. I hate Leila. I didn't think about it before, but the Falcon is probably going to treat Roscoe's death like Cap did with Bucky. I didn't like the whole Nomad phase, but Cap explained his reasons why, which made Nomad ok. Overall pretty refreshing to have a good story.

@Gator I'm pretty sure that could describe America in any year since its inception, and probably before.
I'm definitely in the hating Leila camp, she makes Falcon look like such a weak character for hanging around with her. Imagine for a moment if the pigment was on the other foot, and it was Sharon constantly berating Cap for partnering with a black man. Cap would turn her out so quick that she'd be spending years with a SHIELD shrink.
This story reminds me quite a bit of the Joker's first story in Batman. It's always nice to see these "super-dangerous" villains actually BE dangerous once in a while. Interested to see how he managed to take out Sargent in a locked room full o' heroes. In the Batman comic, Joker had poisoned his victim with a time delayed toxin well before the time of death, and while I'd like to think this isn't just a copy, it certainly seems like the most likely explanation. After all, if he was actually in the room, it would have made much more sense to kill Cap.

I was thinking of the Joker as well. Nearly identical.

This is the Red Skull the Marvel Universe fears.

Leila is just the worst.

Impressive outing here. Looks as though I may have to stop calling him the Red Numbskull; he's become a serious threat in this story and it's about time! I like what Englehart has done here.

And yeah, I agree the Skull's approach here is a lot like the Joker's first appearance in Batman. But leave it to the Skull to claim the plan to be totally original; Nazi ingenuity and all that. Whatever.

The interactions with Leila and Sharon were the low points. Seems like they want to break up the band for their own reasons! With Sharon, her experience as a SHIELD agent makes her behavior seem real contrived. Leila's just being Leila.

4 stars. Should be interesting to see how the Skull killed Sargent.

Steven Roger’s shield goes upside your head,
upside your head, upside your head
Steven Roger’s shield goes upside your head,
upside your head, upside your head

Guess who’s back, back again
Cap is back, tell Falcon
Guess who’s back, guess who’s back?
Guess who’s back, guess who’s back?
Guess who’s back, guess who’s back?
Guess who’s back?

At least we get a “reasonable” explanation for Falcon being left alive
I really want to like Leila despite how she’s written but I can’t

Englehart is waxing more poetically than usual, and even if it is a tad corny, he still pulls it off

This is The Red Skull I remember as a kid, a Nazi Joker. I don’t remember these stories but I have those Freshly minted Red Skulls tattooed on my brain, this is something he did for awhile, correct?
