Issue Review

A step-up from the opener. Both the Hero and his enemy are likeable and compelling. Especially the hero. He comes across as a relateable normal guy, who is just dipping his toe into the world of superheroics. Itís a hook that works. Good supporting cast, too. Thereís nothing spectacular on display, but it is hugely enjoyable. Strong cliff-hanger makes the reader eager to read more. 8/10

The secondary characters are what take this from good to really good.

Kingpin and the punisher wannabe from Iron Fist? They don't make it too hard to figure out.

I dunno GatorMan, the fat man could be lots of people. Egghead? Maybe the Owl is going for the tough guy look? Or look at all those rings... maybe the Mandarin has really let himself go.
How the hell did BG survive the room he was in blowing up without a scratch on him? Pretty sure he's not supposed to be invulnerable.
Who the hell is Neil?!

This issue should have been titled "Black Goliath Scores with a Fine Lady!" I like how the single narrative word "Later..." turns page 15 from a kiss into a night of passion. ("Oh, I will, big man -- I will.") This is one of the few times when I feel like Chris Claremont did not do a better job than his predecessor on a title when it comes to characterization.

Much better than I expected, probably because of the Claremont Factor.

This would've otherwise been too neat a wrap-up without an explanation for the radium thefts. Still, this is keeping the same level as the first issue. The characterization of Bill's team seems pretty solid, but West's face looks too much like that of the mischievous kid-type George Tuska probably used to like to draw during the Golden Age.

And Celia? She's a cutie, and seems like she's set up to be a love interest for Goliath, but sometimes you gotta wonder about the ulterior motives of a woman who's *that* friendly!

3 stars. It's not Chris Claremont's usual level of brilliance, but he did a fine job picking up where Isabella left off in the first issue.
