-First Byrnsey drawn X-Men--I miss Cockrum, but I KNOW I will end up liking Byrne (Cause Hey. I've read all of these at least three times before).
-So Phoenix saved the universe, eh? Set the bar pret-tay, pret-tay high there gal.
-Another solid issue, hard to believe this the same book that featured The Locust and El Jaguar.

This is when we see X-Men take the lead, so far ahead of the Avengers or Fantastic Four. Now I'm getting excited for this series again!

John Byrne takes over art duties in this issue! Which begins one of the greatest creative runs in comics history (and probably THE greatest creative run in X-Men history! That's right!) This one was EPIC! I felt this issue would have benefited more if it was giant size or something. Some of Chris's best writing is featured here! I still don't understand the ending; how the heck did Phoenix save the universe!? I do know it was a beautiful scene even though I was confused most of the time!

Phoenix stitched the cosmic lattice back together? Clever girl!

This issue gave me goosebumps and left me wondering how I could felt so compelled by a comic book. Issues like this justify all the rough patches the order has been through.

So much goodness is crammed into this issue that it feels like a two-parter. It has the cameos from other heroes to show the scale of the threat, which I always like. All of the stuff inside of the crystal is poetic, noble, and beautiful. As a single issue, I like this one even more than #137.

John Byyyyyyrne! The X-Men is really picking up speed now!

Doing the CMRO over the last couple of years, I've read most/nearly all of the Marvel comics put out between 1971 and 1976. In those years there were great series (Man-Thing by Steve Gerber, Master of Kung Fu by Doug Moench) and awful ones (Captain America by Jack Kirby, Werewolf By Night). But most Marvel comics from the period have been good to great, in all honesty. And I've enjoyed the experience enormously. Even so, having just read all of the 1977 issues, in context, I can really appreciate/understand the impact that The X-Men by Chris Claremont must have had at the time. It takes even the best team book of the 1970s (undoubtedly The Avengers with The Vision) and completely blows it out of the water in terms of character/story/action. Wow.

Well that was sufficiently epic. Good job.

That's probably my favorite X-Men story I've read this far. Just a beautiful issue with mind blowing story telling. Love how Claremont's run so far has been building to this moment.

The past few issues have been way ahead of their time. Absolutely brilliant, and quite honestly the best in the order thus far.

Each issue, sans the filler #106, has topped the one before. I hope this is a trend. 5 Stars!

The ending to the Guardians of the Galaxy movie is very reminiscent of this - combining the team's life force to combat an unknowable power without any logic explaining why it works. Still awesome though.

This issue really marks a seismic change at Marvel, and possibly the entire comics industry in general. Byrne's artwork is stellar, and Claremont is at his writing peak.

This issue has everything, drama, fantastic battles, great characterization, and well-placed bits of humor:

"Uh... Jammer to Corsair. I mark a small organic humanoid form, approximately a meter -six long... 70 kilos mass..."

"He's one of ours, Waldo. How's he doin'?"

"Would you believe escape velocity?"

Also caught the homage to "Mutt and Jeff" (Modt and Jahf).

But with the same significance - for all their superpowers, their real strength is found in their bond as a team and a family.
