Perfect example of an enjoyable by-the-numbers super-hero action comic. A villain with a plan and a likeable hero trying to thwart him at every turn. A couple of battles, and some minor character scenes. Itís a fun read, simple not stupid. 6/10

-Not really all that "spectacular" of a debut, but it was serviceable.
-I appreciated GC's manifesto about the need for another Spidey book--can't really knock Marvel too hard...yet.

They could have taken a more interesting villain to launch this new title. Tarantula is just so bland a character.

Bland Conway story and villain with inferior art to ASM.

The "letters page" is the best part of the book. Interesting to read the reasoning and plans

Not sure why they need another Spider-Man mag, but this is much welcomed after that whole Captain America fiasco Kirby started.

When I first started reading Marvel as a stripling, this series was one of the ones I started with. I loved Spider-Man and hated how ASM was at a high publication count. I was ocd back then also.

Could someone explain the difference between Spectacular and Amazing? I mean the mags, not the words.

  AwesomeSauce Says:

This is a two star issue that gets an extra star for being right after Kirbys Captain America. I think the difference is that Spectacular is supposed to be more about Peter Parker and the supporting cast.

If I recall correctly, the original intent was to use Spectacular as a way to flesh out some of the stories of the ancillary characters in ASM (Jameson, Aunt May, Mary Jane, etc.). Whether or not that actually happened, I don't know, but that's the reasoning they give on the letters page.

  Titens Says:

"We want to make this comic with lots of characterization for the all the side characters, since they are what makes ASM so great" And then you go and make a stupid issue with a lame bad guy, a lame plot, and most important, with only one page of pointless dialogue with MJ as "characterization".

I hate the coincidences. Spider-Man and Tarantula just happen to be in the same place at the same time - twice in one issue! Lazy storytelling.

In practice, it was like a bunch of Spider-Man B-sides, until at some point the differences blurred away.
