The second half of this issue was ho-hum, but I really liked the way the first half was done. Showing the future and past in parallel panels and how they match up was really interesting.

Doc Savage has a pet pig and a helicopter during the Great Depression. #winning

Agree with TStarnes. I liked the way the they were laying out the first half. I wouldn't want to see that regularly, because it makes for a difficult read, but it was a nice change. It could of been cool if they continued that pattern for the entire issue.
Without any time travel, Doc Savage and his band of merry men could fight Black Sun in the past, while The Thing and The Torch would in the present. Yet have Black Sun exist simultaneously within both periods, combating both groups.

@sewixo: The pig doesn't belong to Doc, but to Monk.
And yes he have that, and more.

  Lame.

First I thought Habeas was a weird name for a pig, then I realised it must be Habeas Porkus! Brilliant...nope, Habeas Corpus...how did Marvel miss such obvious pun?!

Unless the pig is an escape artist; then I'll concede half brilliance.

Habeas is Monk's pig's name to taunt Ham....the lawyer. Just like Ham's chimpanzee is named Chemistry....to taunt Monk the Chemist.

Not a great ending, and although I dislike Doc Savage, this was a pretty good idea.

I would have loved for the whole issue to be done the same style as it started. Would've been a great spin on the 'team-up'

The separate story on the same pages is a bit much for me. They did it in a couple comics before this one, but not for that long. I did like this origin of Blacksun. Might have been a cool villain, but only appears in 11 issues. Oh well.

I hate the Doc Savage comics, but this story was really well done. I'm giving this 4 stars, despite the sudden ending. Most of everything I'd mention for my reasoning is stated above.

It's not Marvel: the pig comes from the Doc Savage pulp novels and pre-dates Doc Savage's comics by a good 30+ years.

  Oh good. Doc Savage

I, like everyone else, was dreading this issue because Savage's solo stuff can be a real chore to get through but it was probably the best thing Doc Savage related to come out so far, or Marvel Two in One related for that matter.
As much as I enjoyed the split narrative in the first half of the book, I think it made narrative sense to have them meet up to take on the threat. Also, I think the beginning would have flowed better if the Doc story was on the left and the Ben and Johnny story was on the right.
The villain looks like something that would have been created in the 90s, being all black suited and angsty.
The father/son duo here reminds me a lot of the Norman/Harry Osborne relationship and story.

It would be a 5-star issue if Black sun said they wanted to devour their mass.

Quite enjoyed this but they seemed to run out of space and rush the ending

  grayrender Says:

The combination of a time paradox and the editing/split on the front half of the book was brilliant. Even if the rest of the issue was average and ran out of space for a proper resolution, that beginning elevates this book well beyond most of what I remember from this time period. This was a gem and one of Mantlo's best.
