Now that's something, first Thor gives his secret up without asking Odin first, and now he is going to battle Hercules for a girl, like an high-school fight??

And what about the Demon, sure Stan could have developed that further, but decided to get rid of it, for Hercules instead....

Hercules is by far my favorite personality among the Marvel strongmen. I find the extreme arrogance and joy for life amusing. Volstagg was also in fine form in this issue.

Great moments in Thor History-Odin utters the immortal words "I say thee nay!"

Good old Jane, hanging onto any old muscle-bound arm that comes along. This is the woman Thor is causing such a stir over. She's replaced Silver Age Lois Lane as the most unlikeable comics woman of the era.

Hercules is fantastic! He should have had his own continuing series way back then.

I like that right off the bat Hercules doesn't do things to be heroic or because it's the right thing to do, but rather he helps people so he can get some sleep...

I was half-expecting Thor to say "Lo, Hercules! How darest thou attempt to beat my time with Jane Foster, loveliest of mortals!" I guess he hasn't been taking enough slang lessons from Flash Thompson.

Flying trolls who live in a hive and have supernatural hairdressing prowess?! (I have to assume Queen Ula doesn't do her OWN hair.) This is why the world needed Jack Kirby.

Hercules talks the way Hemsworth did in the first Marvel Movie...when he was talking to Portman, Dennings, and Sarsgaard in that restaurant...I like it.
Well...I guess Thor and Hercules are about to fight over Jane Foster.
And speaking of Jane...wow...just like that rap song...”they rotate”....”these girls ain't loyal” lol
Tales Of Asgard was ok...I want to see how Thor and his argonauts handle this.

3 stars Herc and the forgotten Demon!

Cover Me - Herc's shadow looks like it is holding a turkey leg!

Wasted - The poor Demon never had a chance...

Ride The Rails - So Herc clears a Sequoia from the tracks, so they must be on the west coast. And, all they have to do is take him to a city....so, they take him all the way to New York City!!??

We're Butch - On page 8, panel 5 that one Asgardian on the left is wearing fishnet stockings!!!

Hollywood Mogul - I wonder BJ Cosmos changed his name to JB Stardust??

New Do - So, I guess Queen Ula is the 1st woman to wear her hair as a "Beehive"!!!

'Nuff Said - "Willie! Willie! Come 'n pinch me!"-Kinky Conductor

Let's look back an issue, and show unseen dialogue from this familiar scene:
CRACK!
Zeus: What was that noise? Oh jeepers, it's Earth! I'd completely forgotten about them!
Hercules, I grow weary of thy endless frolicking and revelry in Olympus. Hence I have a mission for thee. Go thou to Earth.
Hercules: And what doth I do there, sire?
Zeus: I, er, hadn't thought that far. Frolick and revel, I guess.

Another bumbling old almighty father-god.

If Thor told the witch doctor about being in love with Jane Foster, would the witch doctor tell him "Ooo Eee Ooo Ahh Ahh, Ting Tang Walla Walla Bing Bang"?

On that rather silly note, and without chipmunks, since this is the final issue of Journey into Mystery and Thor's run there, it's time for the evaluation.....

Thor is such a powerful character, even in these early days, he must have been quite tough to write for. Loki was decent but a little overused, and nobody else could really measure up or was written poorly. And Jane? Ugh, even as the typical female as written by Stan in those days (please put the term "typical female" into the context of these stories, not as a slight to women, thanks) Jane was written as if misogyny was justifiable in those days. It seemed as if the only reason she entered the nursing profession in the first place was to look for a husband that would quit his job just for her.

But even in these early days, Thor does show a lot of potential, and using Norse mythology as a backstory, although taking a lot of liberties with it, gives a lot of opportunity to explore his character.

There are a lot of hiccups here, but the Thor feature up to this point gets a C+.

  A couple of other things...

Odin's character as a loving father who treats him like a daughter who chose a street gang member to take her to the senior prom paints him as a not-very-wise all-father and parent. I'm not sure how such a character SHOULD act, but Odin comes across as less parent and more jerkwad than anything.

However, the last minute plot twist with Donald Blake revealing to Jane that he's Thor sets up a potentially great storyline, and redeems Jane's character somewhat. It's one storyline I'm actually looking forward to seeing develop.

  • That's my line – "Though the words be strange, the tone is unmistakable! And worse, they interrupt my madrigal!" (Hercules el Kabong)

  • Is it me or is that Norn Stone much bigger that when it first appeared! If I remember well, Thor was holding several stones in his hand before dropping this one and they were the size of sugar cubes! Maybe it grew in size as much as in power while used by the Demon.

  • Once again, Odin the All-Unwise punishes his "favorite" son in a much severe fashion than he ever did with Loki, who has betrayed him and Asgard time and time again. And for what? Being in love with a human? So why did he put him in a human form to begin with? Ughh! Worst. Daddy. Ever!

  • Wow! The panel with that car whose bottom half was torn off by a thrown streetlamp was pretty impressive!

  • Jane has just met Hercules and she's already following him? She clearly digs muscular guys! I bet she'll ditch him when she meets the Hulk!

  • I know Thor really had a bad-hair day, especially right after Jane brushes him off like an idiot for being late, but it's no reason to be so rude when so nicely greeted by Hercules. It's not his fault if Jane felt lonely and horny.

  • This was a fun issue where Hercules stole the show. Kirby was great despite the sometimes good/sometimes bad inking job. The episode lost a star for Odin and Thor being pointless jerks, but it still was above average so 4 stars!

With this and the last Issue Jane Foster has achieved the Title: "Most pathetic Woman in the MU of the 60s"

Faking depression just because she can't stand to wait for the guy she thinks she might love. When he reveals his secret she demands that Thor (who surely has otherworldly Commitments) stays with her always and forever. But when she sees another immortal, she instantly follows him and "forgets Thor was gone"...

No wonder Thor flips his a-double"s" and gets mad after fighting off all of Asgard after saving Asia (and mybe the world) from the Demon...

Jane Foster, taking lessons from former sorority sister, Gwen Stacy. If I was Thor I'd just say, "Fine. Bye." and go back to Asgard and let Odin do with me what he will.
