Issue Synopsis

Hawkeye continues to clash with Captain America as the new members of the team work to find a balance among themselves. While they bicker former Baron Zemo agent Erik Josten returns to Zemo's laboratory to find the machine that was used to create Wonder Man. The Enchantress arrives and using the machine she turns him into Power Man and enlists his help in defeating the Avengers.

The Avengers are called to several events where they must fight creatures or save comrades from run away trains. Each is a setup staged to make the Avengers look dangerous. At the same time Power Man stages an robbery to make himself look like a hero while at the same time making Captain America look foolish to the police.

They attempt to apprehend Power Man, who know know is behind the framing, only to be caught in another setup. The Avengers are found to be menaces to society and are forced to disband by the government.

Rainbow Bridge, the bridge anyone can cross.... and after many letters requesting a revival of Wonder Man, they do it in a somewhat different way.

As Avengers have top A priority over police and military (and even Rick had to talk to the president himself) they must already have some kind of legal status, but also it what take nothing less than a Supreme Court decision to disband them...

Three of the four Avengers are former criminals, or at least outlaws, i can see why people might be a touch suspicious.

Oh how I loath Hawkeye in these early issues.

The infighting in the Avengers is getting as bad as the FF.

  betarayben Says:

Yeah, the infighting wears on me. Love the art, though.

  Raistlin903 Says:

this team has been all about 2 hotheads that think they can do everything better and a leader that keeps wishing he were on the 'better' squad...... and finally it blew up in their faces....... and Hawkeye is a couplete jerk.... at this point he has a worse attitude then Quicksilver who is known for his attitude problems.......

  danberado Says:

Nothing is as bad as the infighting in the fantastic 4...

With this group of characters, at least it makes a little sense. The torch/thing bickering is especially tiresome because neither of them is remotely clever, but they're always dropping "zingers" regardless...

The parts with the Avengers were good. The villains were not interesting.

I've come up with a new personal rule. If I cannot finish a book in 3 days due to the long windedness then it automatically gets a 1 or 2 star rating and it gets skipped. If it isn't interesting enough to me to keep me reading long enough to finish it by then, then I'm not wasting any more time on it.

Wow, the nerve of Hawkeye. He knows he can't beat Cap, but for some reason he loves to push his buttons. The rest of the story is kind of dull.

  Johnny Darkness Says:

Think of it like a sports team locker room. Dudes are amped and the testosterone is raging and there's a lot on the line.

First of all: I hate these falling-out-of-grace stories!

And while I've had it with Hawkeye's ego, it is interesting to see that it's a problem they just can't make go away.

  TheAmazingGatorMan Says:

The fighting between Hawkeye and Cap is annoying as all hell. How could people find their dialogue entertaining? I have half the mind to write Stan... But this issue is over 50 years old. 3 stars.

  Locust75 Says:

3 stars for the 1st app of the Power Man! Like the Swordsman; they make great foils for this brash young team of Avengers.

Hex Girls - Is the 1st time that the Scarlet Witch's power is called a "Hex Bolt"?

Continuity - I do like the tie-in to Dr. Baron Von Zemo.

'Nuff Said - "Just so long as it isn't anything as childish as Wonder Man!"-Power Man

  MattzLadd Says:

Um...who found the time to make the Power Man costume before Enchantress even had the idea to change Erik Josten - and how come it fits him perfectly?

  phogbear Says:
  2014-09-26 20:09:30
That was a pretty decent plan by the Enchantress, to bad the rest of the issue wasn't as good.

  Bramwell Says:
  2014-11-03 21:18:36
Somehow I don't see this roster lasting. They are all nagging and checking each other too much. Plus Hawkeye is a Delta Bravo.

  Imperator Says:

In my opinion it was perfect issue. Villan that use brain at least. Perfect one.

  CosmicCostello Says:
  2015-01-07 18:33:45
Wish I could give 3.5 stars. This is a good tale in that I like the Enchantress' scheming and Power Man's character. And I guess it's nice to see variations on a theme, but part of me also says the original telling with Wonder Man was clearly a better tale.

  CosmicCostello Says:
  2015-01-07 18:41:43
Hawkeye IS annoying, but there is something interesting in that he seems totally self-aware that everything he is saying to Cap is completely unjustified... but he keeps saying it! And I love how Wanda keeps saying Pietro is not as hot-headed as Clint when Pietro is the poster child of a hot-head. The reader seeing things in the personalities of the characters that they themselves don't see is quite realistic, imo. Still annoying, tho. :)

One thing I like about these early Marvel stories... They weren't afraid to have their heroes have their butts handed to them occasionally. They learn a lesson, and come back swinging.

  Vancelot Says:

Power Man was pretty lame, but the bigger story of embarrassing the Avengers was good. Three stars.

  Big Frank T Says:

So wasn't it a big deal with the avengers early on to 'never' reveal each other's secret identities?

  edgar987 Says:

woods inks over checks pencils make it start at 3 stars. Story bumps it to 4. Also another great cover.

The bickering was funny for me. It was like watching the three stooges in a way. "Fixing a fuse, glamor pants! What does it look like I'm doin'?"

  Russ Says:

I think it was a big selling point in the team comics back then to have the members bickering and fighting.

  Hawkeye! Dude chill some!

  RobinHoodMtl Says:

  • That's my line – "You're warning me?!! You overrated has-been, I've been itchin' for a chance to change that parting in your hair!" (Hawkeye) – Now this time, I need to side with Hawkeye. Cap is acting like a total control freak if he cannot allow his partners to change a simple fuse! Boy, whenever these guys are not fighting enemies, they fight among themselves! When will it end?

  • Sorry, but Power Man is NOT, even remotely, a name that inspires terror! I love the costume though!

  • How come Teen Brigade would know about the monster but not the police. Did the Enchantress contact them personally?

  • Other than that, the Enchantress's plan was quite solid and efficient. She's much more clever the our average self-proclaim geniuses who come up with complex and improbable schemes that constantly fail.

  • Unfortunately, I can't bring myself to score anything more than 3 stars. The infighting is really bringing this series down.

Having the same problems here that I have with recent Iron Man stories. Iron Man is becoming Spider Man lite and Avengers is diet Fantastic Four. What works for the parent series is just annoying here, partially because you can see the seams and doesn't feel as organic.

  Calion Says:
  2017-04-17 23:51:04

  1. This is not who I expected when I read that Power Man would be in this issue.
  2. The Avengers have a serious teamwork problem. Hawkeye's backtalk was one thing, but everyone investigating an address on their own is another. Either Cap hasn't been training them well, or he doesn't have a "whip hand." What happens to Avengers who violate his orders? Can he kick them out?
  3. Since when can the city council issue court orders? The judicial system in 616 works very…oddly.
  4. Jesus, Hawkeye's an asshole. He deserves a session of what old Army folks call "wall-to-wall counseling."

I like how the Avengers are suffering the repercussions of their reckless actions, but I wish that was a regular occurrence, not just the result of an evil plot. ★★½

  Allencthulhu Says:

Oh, come on! The Skrulls did it better back in '62! The only reason the Enchantress's plot works is because the Avengers do everything in their power to make it work.

I shall call him "Mini-me...I mean Power Man"--Simon
