Issue Synopsis

Reed and Sue are back from their honeymoon!

Having returned to the Baxter Building, Reed has set about created an automatic dish-washing mechanism "for Sue" (remember folks - this is the mid 1960's), who happily stands by wearing a hideous apron.

Ben, spotting Johnny napping in a living-room chair, claps his hands together, creating a loud "WHOOMM!" startling Johnny out of his slumber. Johnny flames on, but is quickly admonished by Sue to stop "getting ashes all over the furniture". Irritated, Johnny decides to leave to see Dorrie, the most unpleasant girlfriend on the planet. Ben tells Johnny he's taking the Fantasti-Car to visit Alicia, so Johnny will have to take his Corvette Sting Ray.

Johnny finds the Sting-Ray oddly unlocked, and while driving to Dorrie's house, he laments "puling a boner" by not enrolling in college this year. Hopefully Johnny will soon learn the phrase "making a mistake".

Suddenly the Sting Ray is bounced around the road by tremendous shock waves! Johnny plans to drive toward the source of the shock waves, but is threatened by Medusa, who was (somehow) hiding unseen in the back seat. Using a "vacuum gun", she commands Johnny to quickly drive away from someone or something name "Gorgon", who wants to catch her.

Back at the Baxter Building, Ben is speaking to Reed and Sue when suddenly the building is beset by giant shock waves! Ben sees someone's feet protruding through the wall of the building as they climb to the top. Reed stretches his arm towards the unseen figure on the building's roof, only to quickly retract it in pain. As Ben climbs to the roof, he sees their unseen adversary take off in their helicopter (the "Fantasti-Copter?").

Meanwhile, miles from the city, Johnny, followed by a weapon-toting Medusa, have left the Sting-Ray and are walking through a wooded area. Johnny uses his flame in an attempt to escape but in rendered unconscious by Medusa's weapon. Suddenly, the ground near Johnny and Medusa explodes upward as the Dragon Man,(awakened by the rise in surface temperature from Johnny's flame) bursts to the surface! The Dragon man lunges to attack Medusa, but stops when he recalls someone else with long hair who was kind to him - Sue Richards.

A few hundred yards away, the Fantastic Four's stolen helicopter lands, as it's occupant Gorgon had spotted Johnny's Sting Ray. Gorgon is a beefy man with powerful legs which end end in hooves. Gorgon announces his presence by kicking apart a large boulder. Some of the rock shards strike Dragon man, causing him to turn an attack Gorgon with his fiery breath! Gorgon evades the flame and quickly kicks Dragon Man with his powerful foot!

Medusa takes this opportunity to escape in Johnny's Sting Ray, but the Dragon man takes notice and pursues her by air. He quickly catches up to the speeding vehicle and grabs the vehicle, taking it with him high into the sky. Gorgon follows in the helicopter. Johnny awakens to find Medusa gone and no way of knowing what happened and where she went.

Back at the Baxter Building, Sue has finished ministering to Reed's injured hand. Reed stretches the upper half his body out the window to do a quick spot check of the city to see if he can locate their mysterious assailant. Ben anchors Reed, but is pulled out the window as Reed has yanked away from the building with incredible force. At the last moment Sue grabs Ben's legs, and both are pulled by the lower half of Reed's body to a neighboring building, where an unconscious Reed, Medusa, and an enraged Dragon Man await!

Ben strikes Dragon Man as Gorgon suddenly arrives, announcing it is only Medusa he seeks. Sue encases herself and Medusa in a protective force shield, but Gorgon rains powerful blows upon it, causing her to ask Ben for help. Ben turns to assist, but is smashed by a powerful swipe of Dragon Man's tail! Dragon man approached Gorgon, who stomps mightily on the buildings' roof, causing the portion beneath Dragon Man to collapse. Dragon Man plummets down many floors of the deserted building.

Ben, recovering from Dragon Man's attack, approaches Gorgon, who tells him there is no reason to fight. He only seeks Medusa, as she is from the same race as he. Gorgon needs to take Medusa away to where she "belongs", as it is forbidden for her to mingle with others. Reed wants to hear more about Gorgon's and Medusa's race, but suddenly Johnny attacks Gorgon. Ben joins in the attack, while Reed moves to take the two women away from the battle. However, Gorgon quickly handles Ben and Johnny, leaving the others no time to escape. Reed asks Gorgon why he wants Medusa and where they are both from.

Gorgon instead decides to show them his incredible power, by stomping on the buildings' roof, creating an incredible concentrated seismic shock wave directed at a group of abandoned buildings a block away.

Medusa seizes this opportunity to ensnare the Fantastic Four in the living tresses of her incredible hair. Suddenly Dragon Man bursts through the roof of the damaged building, causing Medusa to loosen her hold on the FF. Dragon Man quickly spots Sue, grabs her, and rises to the sky lifted by his enormous wings. Gorgon uses the confusion to make one final kick on the building's roof, causing the building the FF had been standing on to collapse into rubble!

Actually pretty good so far. I really was wondering about Medusa's origin when I started reading this issue, and looks like they're going to tell us.

The only human thing about Dragon Man is his shorts. I am still reading through this issue, but please someone tell me that Gorgon's powers are much more than just kicking stuff...

If I had to choose a place where Marvel starts to embrace modern storytelling this is it. With just a few exceptions the FF is just one interconnected storyline with one flowing into the next for the next 40+ issues.

The horrific apron Sue is wearing over her uniform at the beginning is almost enough to subtract a full star. Sheesh!

Gorgon was shown way overpowered in this issue. He basically fought all four members of the FF and Dragon-Man to a standstill. It makes it stupid when the FF are going to next fight against all of the Inhumans; if they couldn't take on just one of them how can they handle all of them?

They should have had him fight the FF individually and come up equal, and then the FF beat him when working as a team. Then just when it looked like they'd won, Dragon-Man could have appeared and in the chaos Gorgon could have grabbed Medusa and got away. Would have meant the big face off between the two groups would have been more eagerly anticipated. As it is they have to scale down Gorgon's powers significantly.

I've noticed all villains are over powered when they are introduced. Look at the Scorpion for example. Spidey barely got out alive the first round, but the second was child's play for him.

4 stars for what appears to be a great upcoming arc and the introduction of the Inhumans.

3 stars for my least favorite Inhuman for reasons mentioned above...

Splash - I like the insert of Medusa & Dragon Man. I can see a spin-off with those two!

Dirty Little Johnny - On page 3, panel 4 Johnny pulled a boner!!!

Dragon Tales - A dragon wearing depends makes everything better!!!

Location - With all those empty buildings; are we sure they're not fighting in Detroit??!!

Tangled - Before the Inhuman angle; I wonder what other ideas Stan & Jack had for Madam Medusa???

'Nuff Said - "I never heard of anyone with such powerful feet!"-Sue

Yes but what a dishwasher! It must be at least 10 ft long. There's a conveyer belt for the dishes, a drying and stacking unit, some sort of reel to reel thing - possibly the ram or the hard disk and what looks like a giant old fashioned cash register with five levers of unknown use. It probably runs on energy taken from a sun in a different galaxy and instead of pumping the waste into the sewer, it probably sends it off to the negative zone.

Certifiable. The product of a warped mind. Richards is mad as baloons.

Ughh...the sexism has reached a new absolute low. The maid costume and the dishes machine and getting dinner ready is just too much. I know these are aroduct of their time but I'm pulling a star on this one.

Loved it! One thing I've noticed about Marvel... They do a great job of introducing villains only to later turn the tables and have them appear sympathetic (only to sometimes turn the tables again!)

WOW! those were good times for the comic book reader! from issue 44 to 50, everything seems to run perfectly for Lee and Kirby.
If you add Spider-Man 31 to 33 to this (published during the same months), my mind is blown...

Inhumans, Galactus, Silver Surfer, Black Panther... The ball has started rolling now! Shame it's some foot-stomping dude I've never heard of with his lame power who started that ball rolling. I mean, come ON! Stomping so hard the vibrations knock down a nearby block but leave the already structurally shaky building they're on still standing!??

  • That's my line – "What would make one of the greatest scientific geniuses in the world waste half a day trying to modify a set of kitchen appliances ?? Marriage, that's what!" (Narrator) – Yeah, what a waste, huh?

  • Housewife Sue looks ridiculous in that stupid apron! This is so cliché!

  • Medusa claims she does not want the Fantastic Four's help, yet she abducts Johnny so he... helps her?

  • I don't understand why, of all places, Johnny would take Medusa to State U. But at least, it gives some ground for Dragon Man's return.

  • Despite the wonderful giant panels featuring Dragon Man, I find that Kirby's art was a little uneven in this story, particularly when drawing Medusa and Gorgon. Same goes for the ink job.

  • I must confess I had some hard time with the rhythm of this one. It seems like the story is going in random directions. That being said I still enjoyed it very much. I like the grey area with Medusa, Gorgon and Dragon Man, who cannot fully be considered as villains. I'm really looking forward to what's coming. 4 stars.
