Issue Synopsis

Last issue, the Dragon man flew off with Sue as his hostage, as the rest of the FF were trapped in the debris of a collapsing building caused by an awesome stomp by Gorgon!

Johnny grabs a falling Reed, who fashions his body into a sling to catch Ben. Once Reed and Ben are safely back on the ground, Johnny begins his search for the missing Sue and Dragon Man.

Johnny finds Dragon Man flying away from the city, carrying a captive Sue. Johnny hits Dragon Man with a “near nova amount of bright light”, temporarily blinding him and causing him to return to the ground. (Sue was not blinded by the light burst as she guessed that Johnny would use that type of strategy.) Dragon Man releases Sue, who tells Johnny to leave Dragon Man alone, as she will handle him.

Meanwhile, the Trapster and the Sandman are languishing together in a jail cell. The Sandman tries to escape, but his attempt is quickly foiled. With the Wizard still recuperating in the jail hospital ward (and thereby unable to help them escape), the two villains wonder where Medusa is and why she doesn’t free them.

Reed and Ben are at the Baxter Building, where they observe Johnny, Sue, and the Dragon Man approaching. After the trio lands on the roof, Sue tells Reed that Dragon Man is like a big child, and is more docile now as she convinced him they will not hurt him.

Johnny decides to take a break, and calls Dorrie Evans for a date. She tells him she’s going out with someone else that night. Johnny, feeling restless, decides to take an evening stroll around town. Wandering into a deserted neighborhood, Johnny sees a gorgeous young woman. As he approaches her, she is started, and suddenly a gale force wind knocks Johnny off his feet. Moments later, after the wind subsides and Johnny gets back on his feet, he realizes that the young woman has vanished. He vows to find her.

The next day, the FF are clearing out the largest room in the Baxter Building to make a haven for the Dragon Man. Johnny is distracted and irritable, and ends up once again “going out for some air”. He returns to the deserted neighborhood he visited the night before, and once again runs into the beautiful young woman.

She runs away, and Johnny flames on after her. Seeing his flame, the young woman, who introduces herself as Crystal, incorrectly deduces that Johnny is “one of us”. Johnny plays along so he can figure out what she means.

Crystal introduces Johnny to Lockjaw, an extremely large creature that resembles a bulldog with antennae sprouting from its head. Lockjaw uses his antennae to open a secret door in the rubble, and Crystal guides Johnny downstairs further into the secret passage so he can meet her family. Crystal tells Johnny her family will live in the secret passage until the humans drive them away. Johnny is more confused than ever.

Back at the Baxter Building, the rest of the FF hare having difficulty getting the Dragon man into his new living area. Ben and Dragon man tussle, and Sue ends up tranquilizing the Dragon Man. Ben carries the unconscious Dragon Man to his makeshift bed.

Back at the secret passage, Crystal introduces Johnny to Karnak, who can locate the weak point of any object and then shatter it with a powerful blow. Gorgon, Medusa, and a cloaked figure named Triton appear. Gorgon, Medusa, and Johnny all recognize each other. The others attempt to trap Johnny, but he is able to escape and alert the FF by making a flaming “4” in the sky.

At the Baxter Building, Reed, Sue, and Ben all board Reed’s new airjet-cycle and fly to Johnny’s location. Johnny informs them he’s located Gorgon, Medusa, and “what looks to be a whole race of inhumans”.

Karnak breaks off a section of wall, lifts it above his head, and hurls it towards the unwary FF. NOTE: I didn’t think Karnak possessed that much strength? Sue spots the flying debris, which is then quickly destroyed by Ben.

Suddenly, a powerful figure in black shatters a nearby wall. BLACK BOLT HAS ARRIVED!

TO BE CONTINUED!

The best issues among the whole Lee/Kirby production.
FF 44-50 introduce the Inhumans, Galactus and Silver Surfer!
I'm absolutely not a fan of Stan Lee as a writer, but these last FF comics are great! A "must read".

I honestly don't know anything about the Inhumans, but I like the introduction they get. They seem interesting at this point to me.

Very intriguing! I like the fact that they pointed out that they're different from the X-Men, because that's exactly what I was thinking. I'm curious to see what this Black Bolt guy can do, and from the way the Inhumans are being built up, I hope they go on to become a mainstay in the series.

Even though he can shatter objects with his hand, I never thought Karnak was strong enough to lift a large piece of rubble over his head and throw it at the FF...

Love the writing & the story.

I see comics as an art form evolving in this issue, especially with the use of the last panel to promote the next issue.

Lockdown - Glad to see the prison actually trying to keep the Sandman contained!

Slow Burn - Finally, Torch is starting to notice that Dorrie is nuts!!!

Pet Sounds - Lockjaw and Dragon Man in the same issue! Somebody, pinch me!!!

Streamline - I know they will use the Airjet-Cycle a lot, but man, it's no Fantasticar...

'Nuff Said - "Now come in, Johnny! I'd like you to meet my family!"-Crystal

  Worst. Medusa origin story. EVAR!!

On the plus side, I love love LOVE Joe Sinnott's inking and shading on the Thing. Great stuff. And the full-page splash of the jet cycle was awesomeness through and through. Makes we wish they'd incorporate it in the upcoming film reboot!
