Issue Review

MX5

I must say that was a pretty well written issue, even if these older comics can be a bit mouthy. You can skip most of the yellow bubbles and be fine. Enjoyed it, Batroc is ridiculous but showed integrity as stated above.

This issue was great. This issue still explores the loss of Captain America's past, but not just Bucky, while he also ponders how to move forward. By having Cap reminisce about his old NCO and his old flame, it shows that he isn't just depressed because he feels like he failed Bucky, but he feels completely out of time because everyone he knew has faded from his life.

The story has a dimension added by Batroc the Leaper. While his character is not revealed to have much depth during the course of the battle, he does display what appears to be some integrity. When the entire city is threatened, he would rather team up with Cap over face the consequences. While this is likely due to a desire for self preservation, he still seems genuine in his desire to help. Most of the time when villains team up with anyone, even other villains, thought bubbles creep up all over the place regarding treachery and deceit. This was not revealed in this issue, and shows that Batroc just wants to live, and will figure out the rest later.

I thoroughly enjoyed this portion of the issue simply because of all the character building of Cap, the new direction of a villain teaming with a hero, and the set up for Cap to later discover more about the mysterious SHIELD agent.

Let me see if I got it: that package is all the Inferno 42 the bad guys owned, so after using it what would they use to blackmail everybody? Consider that SHIELD seems to be aware of this 'detail'..

But I liked the play on Steve's personal life.

This is the first Captain America story I've enjoyed in quite some time.

Batroc is hardly what I would consider an exciting villain.

I m french and it wasn't that bad contrary to what I was expecting.
The english Batroc is using is an intermingle of advance proper way of talking english which french never use and some silly french cliché saying which is odd but funny and enjoyable.
Two mistake tho but nothing major.
One spelling mistake in "nom du chien" instead of "nom d'un chien" who litteraly mean "name of a dog" that is equivalant to " for christ sake".
And an other one in the syntaxe.
The way is using "non" which mean "no" who stand for " "isn't it" in the context is wrong a french would just rise is voice at the end of the sentence istead of that, or in a very old manner say "n'est-ce pas?" which litterally means "isn't it but I doubt anybody use this nowday.

Sacre bleu!! haha

Not a bad little story, although I'm unsure how Cap and Batroc could notice the cylinder glowing yet Agent 13 remains unaware.

Nice to see the beginnings of developing of life for Steve Rogers in the (then) modern times.

This was pretty decent. I like Batroc, I think I'm just too tired to enjoy this as much as I want to.

I think Georges St-Pierre should have had a moustache and beard like that in the Winter Soldier film. And he should have said "Nevaire!" as often as possible.

4 stars for the 1st app of Batroc & Agent 13!!!

Men In Black - Who are the mysterious bad guys that hire Batroc? It doesn't say here, but years later a handbook has THEM as being part of AIM or HYDRA.

Zut Alors - I have always liked Batroc Ze Leaper! He was Cap's 1st modern villain!! Plus, he always just loved to fight; without any of the rule the world hangups!!!

'Nuff Said - "Next, I'll be cutting paper dolls"-Cap

3 stars for a much improved Cap story, and I've that seems to get him involved in SHIELD. Never heard of Batroc the Leaper. Great issue, hopefully Stan builds upon this momentum.

Glad Stan knows that F=MA so the impact of the water knocks Cap out, but unless his shield has buoyancy I'm unsure how he doesn't sink with it strapped to his arm.

For some reason I've always liked Batroc, so plus one for his 1st appearance. And Sharon Carter's tho I've always felt her being related to Cap's WWII gf was an odd choice. And apparently their parents had them 20 or more years apart which is pretty remarkable. Guess Sharon was an unplanned surprise.

Kirby layouts very evident here. Plus another one!

This feels like the start of something awesome! There's more emotional depth and nuance in Cap's character building than we've seen anywhere else up to this point in the order.

On top of that we get a villain who is both polite and even seems to have some sense of honor, the only other villain we've seen portrayed this positively would be Hawkeye.

I had no idea Agent 13 was introduced this early in the Marvel universe, I'm glad to see her here!

Wahoo! Batroc (ze Lepair!) and Agent 13! Action! Pathos! An Irving Forbush mention! Batroc even twirled his mustache! What more could you want?

Well, perhaps some continuity... wasn't Cap floating down to Earth in a parachute at the end of the last issue? Perhaps the force of the explosion blew the fabric to smithereens?

I like Steve hanging out at Stark's apartment. He looks like he's in a convalescent home for retired police officers, what with the robe, slippers, lap blanket... and the collection of guns hanging on the wall!

I didn't knew about Batroc before, he seems to be liked! I love the intro of Agent 13.

The shared universe is really present now... with SHIELD in Cap stories, Stark in Shield stories, X-Men villains in the Avengers it took 4 to 5 years to achieve this level but now it's worth it

Batroc is ridiculous. If the villain was a little more of a serious threat then the issue would have gotten an extra star from me.

Nice little story. I always thought the modern age Cap was more at home in the espionage game than just being a brawler like he was at the start of this series. It's taken awhile but I think this finally starting to kick into gear. Batroc is a refreshing villain who seems to like being in the game instead of being a cookie-cutter "I am Supreme, it is my God-given right to rule the world" like most of the Marvel villains we've seen. And that's Agent 13, eh? We're finally seeing the start of a supporting cast for ol' Winghead.

  • That's my line – "If only I could have seen his face when he learned – if he ever did – that Rogers and Captain America were one and the same!" (Steve Rogers about Sgt. Duffy) – I sure hope WE get to see that one day!

  • That's my line too – "Perhaps it's Steve Rogers who's the legend... and Captain America who's the reality!" (Steve Rogers in full identity crisis) – Pretty strong line here!

  • If I had to follow someone with a package who happens to "randomly" bump into someone else who, by the weirdest twist of fate, is the only one around with a package the same size, shape and colour than the first, all my senses would tingle! That old trick is to cliché to succeed!

  • I really like this new villain. He has style, honor and more than one dimension. We have not seen that very often in the Order yet. And as Aurdazur pointed out, the French expressions were not too bad except for the mistakes he noted. I can't help but hear the character speak with a huge accent when I read it, so this is good! I'm French Canadian so maybe my opinion is biased by the fact that GSP impersonated the character in the movie.

  • Anecdote: St-Pierre had to change his Quebecker accent to a European French while speaking English for the movie, which made his job more complicated since he's not really an actor. So the French Canadian colour was still there for someone with a good ear for accents.

  • I really liked this episode which is a good improvement in the series so far. I'm a bit disappointed Tuska's talent was not used in this one but Ayers was OK enough. Cap's struggle to find his place in his new life is interesting storywise and like others said, I'm happy they are now giving more depth to his character. I can't wait for the conclusion. 4 stars!

Wow this is... Good. Intrigue, character development, a cliffhanger. Sure Batroc is a bit goofy but he seems to have a bit more depth than most villains so far.
