Issue Synopsis

The Avengers receive a call for help from Henry Pym saying the Wasp is missing, and at the same time reveals he is Giant-Man. Still at sea, Hank blames himself for letting Janet put herself in danger.

The Wasp is imprisoned in small glass cylinder by the Collector. He had sent the Beetle to Avengers headquarters to capture her, as part of a plan to add all the Avengers to his collection.

After Hawkeye has taken Henry Pym to Stark's mansion, the team wants to take him back but first, he needs to prove that he is Giant-Man. They suddenly get a radio message from the Collector who tells the Avengers that they need to pay him a visit if they want to see the Wasp alive. Hank then confesses that changing size puts a lot of strain on his body and that now, he can only grow to 25 feet. He has to remain that size for 15 minutes, no more, no less, or else he will endanger himself gravely. As he is about to change, Wanda tells him that she has made a new costume for him out of the same kind of fabric he used for his other outfits. In his new suit, he changes sizes, telling the others that he can now do it at will without using pills or chemicals. As the team happily takes him back, he decides to use his new look as an opportunity to change his code name to Goliath.

On their way to the Collector's lair, Hawkeye broods over the fact that another founding member of the Avengers is back in the team. This means that his chances at leadership are now considerably thinner even if Cap retired. The team lands and discovers a castle which they carefully enter. However they soon find themselves separated, gassed and captured.

Waking up, Goliath escapes and frees the other Avengers who follow after the Collector, but the giant is slowed down by his size. While Quicksilver runs ahead in search of the Wasp, the rest of the team is confronted by the Beetle who isolates Cap from Wanda and Hawkeye by making behind a pile of rocks fall between them.

Elsewhere in the castle, Goliath and Quicksilver find the Collector who quickly neutralized the speedster. The villain uses all kinds of weapons from his collection against Goliath, including beans that summon two giants who attack the hero. Meanwhile, the Beetle brings an unconscious Captain America to the Collector, but they are joined by the Scarlet Witch and Hawkeye who have escaped from the wall of rocks. After the team gets rid of the giants, Goliath grabs the Collector and forces him to hand over the Wasp.

The Collector escapes using a time machine and takes the Beetle with him. The Scarlet Witch frees the Wasp from her tiny cage and as she resumes normal size, Janet reveals her true identity to the other Avengers. However, when Goliath tries to shrink down to his normal size he collapses because he stayed giant-sized much longer than he should have. He stops shrinking at ten feet tall and then falls unconscious.

  Ridiculous Line of the Book:

Scarlet Witch to Hank Pym: "I never told anyone, but I've been sewing a new outfit--in case you ever did return--I'll get it! I made it of the special stretch fabric you had left behind, months ago!"

Ahhh, those gals in the 60s...they loved their Women's Work.

I have to hand it to Wanda, she made one cool costume. Sad thing is, Henry Pym changes costume so often, it won't matter ._.

Yet another amazing "First" for Marvel - the first time someone gets a new costume and no one mentions Christian Dior!

This was surprisingly refreshing! I was pretty shocked when Pym revealed his identity! And I guess the Wasp couldn't keep hers private too easily if we know who Giant Man is. I'm really curious to see what they do with this situation now.

These beans are inspired by the legend of jack and the beanstalk!!...aaaaand they release gas. Not an instant growing plant or something. Just pink smoke. The collector's collection must suck. And they are the most priceless beans on earth! wow. no words.

I hope that 15 minute time limit for the size change doesn't stick. It's another artificial obstacle thrown in for no reason.

love the return of Pym and the Goliath name is so much better then Giant-Man.....

So let's see, Thor told his identity, Rick told Hulk's, Goliath spilled his and Wasp's...... Happy figured out Iron Man's but got amnesia....... Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch aren't really secret, niether are the FF......

the more secret identities that become public, the less we have to deal with the secret identities in the writting......... I wish they would all spill it if that's the case.......

So Hank's new power is can only grow to one height for a limited amount of time? I didn't think it was possible but they continue to make his superpower more and more useless. Also the first thing he does after growing is shrink right back down to size. Stan couldn't even keep his power consistent from one page to another...

  metasynthie Says:
  2014-06-17 10:59:55
Hank's new power is to create a lot of captions that say "exactly 15 minutes later, when Goliath can shrink back to normal size so that he can fit in..." Perhaps Stan decided his ability to dodge attacks and get quickly across town by executing multiple size changes in rapid succession was OP, but I just found it tactically interesting!
Wanda likes to sew clothes for guys she's hoping will rejoin the Avengers, proving once again that Marvel boys in the 60s (like Spidey) hated to sew, but gals liked it to a nigh-creepy degree.
Secret identities continue to get cast off like old costumes, to everyone's great relief.
The Collector doesn't reveal anything about his nature but does reveal that the Earth-616 Brothers Grimm retconned giant-summoning beans into beanstalk-growing beans, probably because they couldn't figure out how to convince anyone that magic beans would summon giants out of a cloud of pink gas, instead of, say... growing an enormous bean-plant, which just makes too much sense for Earth-616.

I actually like seeing Hank and Janet back on the Avengers team.
Hawkeye's still an @$$, but it's almost like him and Cap are sometimes cracking on each other in a playful way.
I like the new name...Goliath.
This was pretty darn good. I like the new team.

4 stars for the 1st app of Goliath and the Collector!!!

Cover Me - A great image of Goliath with the Avengers!

Goliath - Like others have said. The new costume is good, but I wonder if the stretch fabric that Wanda found is really unstable molecules? The height problems were annoying in Tales To Astonish due to inconsisities. Just like his secret identity that only seemed to come up when it helped the plot. I hope Stan can keep it straight this time around!

Beetle - His helmet looks different, and with too much green...maybe the Collector refitted him??

Fee Fi Fo Fum - I wonder if the magic beans summon giants from Jotunheim?

Night And Day - Funny, that Don Heck can make Wasp look good, and Wanda frumpy!?

Mint Condition - I like it that for his 1st app the Collector seems like a regular human villain, but we all know better than that...

'Nuff Said - "I must have a complete set!"-The Collector, he collects things

It would have been a long time ago, and if anyone would remember I'm sure it would be you, so my memory may be making it up, but wasn't it mentioned at one point that Pym and Reed were using the same unstable molecules for their costumes?

Why does the Collector plan to collect alumni Avengers Giant-Man and the Wasp but not Thor or Iron Man? Picky.
To be honest, at first after he collected the Beetle and the Wasp, I thought he was gonna be like "And now for Ant-Man, Spider-Man and Ladybug-Man to complete my collection!"

  > To be honest, at first after he collected the Beetle and the Wasp, I thought he was gonna be like "And now for Ant-Man, Spider-Man and Ladybug-Man to complete my collection!"

Yeah! At first, I was convinced he was starting a bug collection! And let's not forget the Black Widow and the indispensable Scarlet Beetle!

  • That's my line "I'd never guesses he was Henry Pym!" (Captain America) Oh, please! Even his fan club knew it! Well at least, now it's official and they will no longer talk about it!

  • That's my line too "You'll get used to him, Hank! Every group has its little sunbeam... He's ours!" (Captain America, about Hawkeye's joie de vivre) That explains how Cap copes with his partner's constant nagging. He simply decided to let go! How I envy his zenitude!

  • OK, nowadays it sounds sexist that Wanda was the one who sewed Hank his new costume, but imagine what contemporary readers would have thought if Captain America had come up with that line! "Say what??! Wow!... Well, that explains the cute little wings, and Bucky, and the fitness obsession, and... Ohmaggod! To think that he was my idol for so long?!"

  • I wonder why the Collector wanted the Wasp and Giant-Man in his collection despite the fact that they were no longer officially part of the team. Following the same logic, he should also plan on capturing Iron Man, Thor and even the Hulk. Well... good luck with the last two!!

  • Again, Gia... sorry, Goliath proves how clumsy his size can make him! And he has to stay that way for 15 minutes! Not 14, not 16, 15! A nice round figure, because nature does nothing random! Like other readers have said, I don't like these new rules right when his powers were starting to get cool.

  • By the way, cool new suit, but so far, my favorite will always be the first Giant-Man red suit, without the helmet and shoulder pads.

  • Overall, not a bad story. 4 stars! I'm looking forward to see how the dynamic will turn up in this new line-up. Will Hawkeye remain a dick? Will Giant-Man shut him up for good? Will Wanda and Janet become rivals? Or will they start a sewing club?
