Issue Synopsis

The Avengers find themselves unable to revive the fallen Goliath. After failing at reaching Dr. Donald Blake to get medical care, Captain America recommends they call Dr. Carlson, who served in the Army Medical Corps. The doctor arrives immediately and after examining Pym, he informs them that their friend will recover but must never attempt to shrink any further than his present 10-foot size.

In the meantime in the Far East, a recently brainwashed Black Widow is ordered by her superior to go back to the United States with the mission to destroy the Avengers. Back at Stark's mansion, Goliath, devastated by the idea of spending his life in an oversized body, leaves without telling anyone.

Not too far, in a circus, the Black Widow meets with the Swordsman after his performance. He decides to accept her offer to drop his entertainment act and join her in her plan to get revenge on the Avengers. The Black Widow also mentions that she intends to enlist another partner.

In the gym of the Avengers Headquarters, Captain America announces to Hawkeye that the Black Widow is alive and back in America. The archer is so excited of the news that when Cap tries to explain that she has been most likely brainwashed by the Communists before they let her go, he gets upset and leaves. Cap asks the Wasp to keep an eye on him.

Hawkeye arrives at the Black Widow's old headquarters. He is disappointed when he realizes that she is more distant and cold than he had hoped, and even more so when he discovers that the Swordsman and Power Man are working for her. She offers him to join them against the Avengers, but Hawkeye replies by attacking them. The Wasp, who has followed her teammate, witnesses the scene, but since she has no weapons, she decides to fly back home and warn the other Avengers. However on her way back, she is chased by a bird and when she finally lands on a branch to resume normal size, she falls down and lies unconscious.

This gives enough time for the Swordsman and Power Man to reach the Avengers headquarters and get the drop on Captain America. The star-spangled hero awakes locked up in a dungeon and sends a distress signal to Pietro and Wanda. While the siblings track him down, the Wasp arrives at Stark's mansion and after realizing she's too late, she tries to contact Goliath for more help.

Meanwhile, in the Black Widow's lair, Pietro, then Wanda fall into a trap and get captured. When asked by the Swordsman about her motive for destroying the Avengers, the Black Widow says she plans to have them brainwashed to serve them, but raises suspicion when she speaks of enslaving the free world.

Suddenly Goliath barges in and attacks the two male villains while the Black Widow steps back to try some weapon on the giant. She is stopped by the Wasp whose sting knocks her out. Janet then grows back to normal size to activate the controls that set her partners free. Together, the Avengers manage to corner the three villains who get away through a laser beam gate. Hawkeye could have used an arrow to stop their escape but could not commit to shoot it at his ex-girlfriend. He is however surprised at Captain America's compassion and understanding towards him and feels shame for his past attitude with his leader. Goliath is still upset about his new condition.

The Wasp defeated by a sparrow? That's just too good. Giving this one an extra star for that.

"I'm doomed to spend the rest of my life in the world that's too small to me!" How could Comic Code Authority approved that sentence? Come on, You guys! We all know what he's really talking about...

Dare we hope that Hawkeye might be growing up a little? It is good to see some reasonable interaction between him and Cap.

So last issue it was repeatedly stated that Gia- wait, no Goliath can now only change to one height of 25 foot, and that he has to spend a minimum of 15 minutes at that size before turning back. That's fine, as long as they stick to it.

Very first page of this book and he's stuck at a different height (10 foot) and the reason is because he stayed at 25 foot over his "time limit of 15 minutes"!

*Facepalm*

Cap-"Doctor, do you remember Giant Man?" Quicksilver-"He's not Giant Man anymore. He changed his name to Goliath" Cap-"just a few hours ago, dumbass. So the doctor would still remember him as GiantMan"

It's a sad state of affairs when Giant Man-oops, Goliath-is the most powerful Avenger.

I don't understand why changing from bigger to normal size causes a huge strain on Pym's body, but changing from insect to normal size has no impact on the wasp. Let's just roll with it I guess. I do like the way this team is starting to gel.

Stan decides his last nerf of Hank wasn't good enough and nerfs him down to 10 feet plus an emo weakness due to a life of being doomed to be 30% taller than Manute Bol. Great superpower: I'm a really tall guy! Let's just hope he gets more use out of his super-science brain (and some bigger test tubes).
Natasha gets defeated by a single sting from Janet, who in turn was previously knocked out by the deadly duo of a sparrow and a tree branch; someone get these superheroines some super, please.
Cap, ironically, is 100% sure that a loved one who's been kidnapped behind the Iron Curtain will have been brainwashed and that it's not a good idea to pursue them.
Hawkeye gets his wounds salted by Cap's ultimate power, being such a nice guy that he induces tremendous guilt.

Silver Age silliness with the whole size change thingy.
Well, Hawkeye mentions Black Widow and guess what.? She shows up. Ugh..Silver Age crap.
I like how Wasp acts now. She's more mature, not flirting with everyone male in the room.
It seems that Hawkeye has been humbled by Cap and they didn't even have to fight for that to happen. That's why Cap is the best leader ever.

4 stars for WrestleMania XXIX!!! A great fight issue indeed! Black Widow, Swordsman, and Power Man make a great match for this group of Avengers!!

Manchurian Candidate - Interesting that Red China captured and brainwashed the Black Widow. I wonder if the Kremlin knew about it??

Cat Fight - Who else wanted to see the Wasp and Black Widow tussle some more? It would be just like the scene in "Undercover Brother". Where White She Devil was fighting Sistah Girl and the guys stop fighting to watch them!!!

'Nuff Said - "En Garde, Avenger!"-Swordsman

The art keeps improving. I liked that wide shot on Pg8/P3 of Hawkeye firing off the two arrows... sort of a cool 3D effect. If only Don Heck broke the frame and had the ends of the bow extend outside the border, that would have been icing on the cake.

Gotta love Cap. He's a righteous dude.

Why was the doctor sweating after being left alone to examine Hank? WHY?!?

Well, I was half-way through (Janet had just been defeated by that infamous nemesis The Swallow), and wrote a comment about how disappointing the return of Goliath and the Wasp was (why does the name roll off everyone's tongues so easily? No-one, not even villains are like, "Here comes Gian... err, I mean Goliath!"), but upon reading to the end feel they have both scraped a pass on their redemption tests.

  Russ Says:

What a way to skirt the Comics Code in order to give Jan the bird. They just didn't like women back then.....

But seriously, the return of Hank and Jan so far is working out pretty well, and even Hank's bemoaning about his size-changing isn't too bad (as long as they don't beat it to death, but this IS the Silver Age after all). The two characters did always work better within the Avengers framework as opposed to their solo stories.

  • That's my line "I remember Thor telling us to contact a Dr. Donald Blake in case of emergency!" (Janet) Worst advice, considering how often Dr. Blake is on duty!

  • That's my line too "I shall never rest until we have enslaved the free world!" (Black Widow) I'm not an expert in history, but I'm pretty sure that this was not the kind of remarks anyone made during the Cold War! I believe, however, that this is the kind of propaganda Americans were made to believe!

  • Wanda has been going through quite a range of colors from red to purple then magenta lately. Well, she's no longer green! Also, although her costume is really covering her whole body, coloring almost makes it appear like she was wearing a bikini with a cape. Nice way to cheat the Comics Code!

  • Also, has anyone else noticed how Hawkeye's costume NEVER has the same color patterns?

  • Goliath shouldn't be so angry about staying 10-foot tall. Besides, something tells me that lustful Janet will be the last woman to complain about it!

  • You know, except for bossing her allies around, the Black Widow always has been pretty useless so far! I can't wait for badass Johansson to take over!

  • It was meant to happen someday, it was a question of time. The Wasp finally got chased by a bird! That was delicious!

  • Wanda's waistline on page 13 is beyond ridiculous!

  • It was fun to see the Wasp attacking the Black Widow just because, you know, wasps and spiders are natural enemies!

  • It felt so good when Cap's compassion put Hawkeye's attitude to shame!

  • That was a great issue in spite of some minor details. I think I'm going to love this new roster! I also loved the lineup of villains. And Heck's art was as great as usual. 5 stars.
