I love that from the 60s point of view the Dominus machine had to have "endless corridors of ultra scientific machinery."

  TStarnes Says:
  2011-10-17 00:00:00
And stairs...Cause they can build world controlling alien machinery...but not hydraulics.

  Webslinger Says:
  2012-11-13 13:28:52
Yep, a machine a machine was only good if huge. And Dude, was this wordy!

  Uknowitbyheart Says:
  2013-02-27 15:58:30
I don't like Roy Thomas' early writing at all, but when he was teamed with Neal Adams...much better. Cyclops blasting Angel was worth 3 stars to me.

  leisch Says:
  2013-08-07 11:27:12
Roy Thomas has written some of the all-time great comics stories. Unfortunately, this isn't one of them.

At The Gates of Dawn Says:
  2013-08-08 13:26:01
THIS TOOK ME AN HOUR TO READ!!! Again Roy Thomas was not writing a script for a comic book, he was writing couple of thesis statements! And why! WHY does everyone in the X-Men have to say something within one panel!? Even during the boring action scenes every member just had something to say!? I still don't understand the ending, so the alien's plan failed because of a couple of robots got destroyed? LAME!

  Raistlin903 Says:
  2013-12-28 14:38:15
man those pesky picture sure get in the way....... oh wait, that's right, I'm reading a comic book, not a novel......

  metsguy Says:
  2014-02-11 09:11:21
Endless corridors...heck, that felt like an endless comic book. It's a shame that the villain responsible for Professor X's losing the use of his legs is as lame as Lucifer. He's gotta rank up there among the worst X villains easily.

  kaste Says:
  2014-06-05 09:58:06
  So. Many. Dialogue. Balloons.

  metasynthie Says:
  2014-06-18 09:42:16
The X-Men's biggest challenge in this adventure is in dealing with the convoluted plot; they fight amongst themselves because they don't realize that Dominus is equipped with force-returning defenses, which are never seen, and that Lucifer's whole plan will become useless without his maintenance/combat robots, which he's using too recklessly because of Xavier's manipulation. Ohhhhkay. Can we just watch Charles put on a puppet show by himself instead? The guy is pretty dispassionate when facing the villain who destroyed his legs, too...
Meanwhile. Stan gets excited about Coleridge quotes and Bobby quotes Eugene O'Neill when he decides to "cometh." The first... but undoubtedly not the last... time that'll happen.
Lucifer managed to activate a device last episode which could make people thousands of miles away forget that he existed, which is pretty omega-level mental control, but fortunately didn't have time to activate the much bigger omni-will-sapping device.

  marvelcomicslover Says:
  2014-07-19 19:57:04
Wow this is really wordy and boring, but at least the art has gotten way better.
This was not enjoyable in the least.

  TheAmazingGatorMan Says:
  2014-08-19 11:58:21
It was a weird, yet interesting arc. I am beginning to hate how these bad guys are doomed to a different dimension, memory loss, etc but they keep coming back somehow. 3 stars for the weird story and for professor X becoming an Atlantian (fish bowl helmet).

  Tarquinnff3 Says:
  2014-08-20 15:28:09
I'm glad Lucifer is gone. That guy was so boring. These issue with him in them were painful to read. Hopefully the next villain is a little more interesting.

  Locust75 Says:
  2014-09-07 19:47:12
Just 1 star for Dominus and the Ultra Robots! How I wish it were Derek & the Dominos!!!

Cover Me - You know for years, I always thought that the Ultra Robot was popping out of the red teleport thingy. I just now noticed the difference!

Stay Inside The Lines - Everybody talks about the amount of text and word balloons, but I think Werner Roth did a pretty amazing job of actually fitting some art in there!!!

Mutants Of Moo Mesa - It's sad that the best part of the story is Porter Mack & the Macaroon's!!!

One And Done - I don't think we'll ever see the X-Hovercraft again....of course they could of used it in the cave!

'Nuff Said - "Curse you, Marvel Girl!"-Lucifer

  MattzLadd Says:
  2014-09-22 16:07:37
It pains me to see Professor X was physically conflicted for the rest of his days because of a D-List alien, and also that he proves useless throughout this entire arc.

  Bramwell Says:
  2014-11-28 02:09:42
Those poor horses...but seriously this issue is terrible to read

  GroovyGolem Says:
  2015-05-29 05:41:42
Hoo boy... did Roy Thomas get paid by the word, or what?

Those images of Mack the Cowboy on Page 2 reminded me of Ronald Reagan.

Xavier looked ridiculous in his fishbowl helmet and lap blanket. Also, he seemed so much more upset during his previous encounter with Lucifer in X-Men #9. Maybe time really does heal all wounds after all?

If nothing else, this issue made me look up the Coleridge quote... From "Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge:

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.

It goes on, of course...

  Vancelot Says:
  2015-07-15 02:05:54
I couldn't do it. For the first time, I quit in the middle of an issue. Too many useless words. 1 star. Negative stars if I could.

  ViolentPhlegm Says:
  2015-07-23 20:17:43
Dull, wordy and with especially obnoxious dialog from Beast. No one speaks like that.

  Big Frank T Says:
  2015-10-29 14:37:31
Even wordier then some of those old golden age books. Ok. Head hurts after that,

  chrisWhite Says:
  2016-02-16 00:04:13
Long and boring, one of the worst X-Men issues so far. What was up with the cowboy filler anyway? They added nothing to the story except a couple more pages, what a distraction.

I can't wait for these comics to ease up on all the text.

@ViolentPhlegm Beast's dialog was one of the only things I liked about this issue.

  kungfufan Says:
  2016-08-18 02:49:28
Sometimes we get filler issues part-way through a story arc, sometimes between arcs. This time we get a cowboy filler mid-issue! Dude!
For a homo superior with such an incredible intellect, I'm indubitably of the persuasion that there are numerous incidents when Henry McCoy (aka Roy Thomas) misuses his prolific vocabulary (= For a fella who's clever, Beast says stuff wrong too often).
I DID like that the machine was transported by light, reminiscent of but probably predating some sci-fi movies I've seen.
Finally... Count Nefario does NOT deserve a 'Nuff said.

  dadoodoflow Says:

  Shintetsuken Says:

  Silver Surfer first appearance?

  mrtc2003 Says:
  2017-05-20 03:48:21
Definitely an example of a writer still learning his craft. Far too many words and a rather pointless digression with some cowboys. And the main story wasn't up to much either.
And what's a dude-ranch anyway?

  Allencthulhu Says:
  2017-06-25 23:02:16
I actually gave the third star because of the Dude Ranch guy. Only because I laughed at the ice cube straight jacket.

  philvt101 Says:
  2017-12-26 14:45:35
So they flew from Westchester to the south western desert, then flew around until dawn and then left the jet flying circles around the mesa on autopilot? How much fuel is in that thing, and how the hell are they planning on getting back aboard with a hovercraft?

  RobinHoodMtl Says:
  2018-01-10 23:24:17
  • That's my line – "What an ungraceful pose for the agile Beast to assume! Something is obviously amiss!" (Beast)

  • That's my line too – "Beastie boy, did you ever notice the tiny sigh of materialism in Warren's character?" "Be kind, lad! Besides, you're beginning to sound like me!" (Iceman and Beast) – I'm starting to really like the relationship between those two!

  • I have to admit that, aside from the missing eyes mentioned in other issues by Locust75, the artwork continues to impress me. It's not as detailed as Gene Colan's or as complex as King Kirby's (one can only imagine how awesome he would have made page 8!), but it is still pretty good. BUT... My God, these speech bubbles are out of control, which kind of ruins the effort put in that art.

  • Fun scene with Porter Mack getting iced for his ride back to the ranch.

  • Nice impersonation of the Silver Surfer by Iceman on page 10!

  • When Xavier says Dominus may be the greatest menace the Earth has ever known, he's probably forgotten all about Galactus!

  • I liked the X-Men being uncertain whether it was Xavier or Lucifer who was giving them orders.

  • Do you realize Lucifer would have succeeded if he did not mess with the X-Men from the beginning?

  • Earth is a #1 destination for alien invasion, but boy do they all give up easily.

  • Story was okayish, but the resolve was pretty weak. 3 stars again.
