Issue Review

jfpj1991
   October 1, 2012
This issue was about par for the course for both Sub-Mariner and the Hulk, though I was slightly disappointed by the former.

In the first portion of the issue we see Namor engaging in battle with the Behemoth. This has been built up for several issues now. Namor doubted that he could best the beast, as he was created to be invincible against any foe. Then when the two begin fighting, Namor is very confident for someone who lacked confidence at the idea of the Behemoth, maybe he just does well under pressure. The worst part about this, is they cheapened the fight by having the Behemoth controlled by Krang, and Namor won with a simple whirlpool. It was barely a real fight between the Sub-Mariner and the ‘most terrifying beast to every live under the sea’.

Really, are we going through the whole "marry me and I'll spare your real love" BS? That stuff went out with tying maidens to the ralroad track. Oh, Stan!

Nice Hulk story. Now they just need to bring in Kala.
Did Mole Man's minions talk before? Maybe they just didn't have anything to say.

I hate when the only reason someone follows thru and makes a dumb decision is cause they don't want to give the other person 2 seconds to spit out what they have to say, but instead go on for panel after panel about how they have no time to listen....... a lot of misunderstandings in the marvel world would never have happened........

Namor uses the sea-monster equivalent of hair-pulling and a convenient 1000-year-old bed of underwater quicksand to dispose of the Behemoth, who "disappears from human sight... forever!" Whenever I read these assurances that a villain is gone for good, I get the feeling that someone at Marvel decided after a few issues that the character was such a bad idea that even readers needed to be told "don't worry, this one's not coming back." If only someone had excused Fred Myers or Melvin Potter this way.
The Hulk gets even more practice being transported elsewhere by mysterious beams, since it would take way more panels to actually convince or lure the Hulk into leaving his current moping cave. The Mole People, finally able to appear in a comic without a whole team of heroes fighting for speech bubble space, prove that they're not just mute and mindless. Betty gets a tip-off that the Hulk might really be Bruce since he shows his first signs of REALLY disliking the name Banner.

Namor wasn't that bad...decent art, decent story.
Hulk story was pretty entertaining even though it had Mole Man in it.

I thought Namor was wearing some kind of bra on page 8, but it was just the result of some unflattering shadows.

Quicksand. really? In the ocean?! god damnit Stan.

Also, when the Puppet Master last controlled Namor, he attempted to control an octopus that was attacking him as to save his life... But alas he couldn't because it was a brainless beast. Fast forward to now... The Puppet Master can all of a sudden control brainless beasts. 2 stars... Should give it 1 but it's not Torch/Giant-Douche bad.

The Hulk was pretty good again. I'm pleasantly surprised by how good the resurgence of the Hulk has been. 3 stars.

I guess 3 stars overall.

Just 1 star for the bashful Behemoth!

Comics Code - Good to see that Dorma finally put some pants on!

Gated Community - Why bother with iron gates when you can swim over them!!

Muppets - @TheAmazingGatorMan: The Behemoth is a android, and the Puppet Master has been shown to be able to control them in the past.

'Nuff Said - "Give me that weapon, woman! Krang is in command now!"-Warlord Krang

2 stars for the chaos at the center of the Earth!!

To Serve Man - I agree with comments above. I think this is the first time that the Moloids talk. Also, on page 4, panel 4 the Moloid is in blackface!

Octo-Mom - I wonder if this is where Pixar got the idea for the Omnidroid in the Incredibles?

'Nuff Said - "AHH! He comes--!"-Mole Man

Sheesh, I'm getting tired of all of these huge build-ups, only to have them disposed of within a few pages.

It still bothers me in the Namor stories how they show the Atlanteans all just walking around, or worse, running around at the bottom of the ocean floor. At least when Namor was fighting the Behemoth, he was swimming. That makes way more sense.

P4P1, the Puppet Master's posture: lol! I can imagine him chewing his nails nervously!
I'm glad Namor used "as though they were made of seaweed" instead of cardboard, which would be a fairly foreign - and pointless - material to a deep sea dweller.
Behemoth didn't get an "appears next in..."? Too bad, he was ok as mindless beast-type villains go.

  • That's my line – "It is... the Lady Dorma, Majesty! She has fled the realm... with the escaped Warlord Krang! They are... about to be wed!" (Vashti) – The poor old man transmitted the information he was given. Good job, Dorma! Now it looks as though you deliberately left Namor for Krang!

  • Nice touch that they did not forget to give Krang a helmet to breathe on land this time! (...'coz they forgot about this detail in last issue!)

  • I also love that Lady Dorma is depicted as a courageous and resourceful woman in this arc, instead of the two-faced, emotional disaster that she was in her first Silver Age appearances.

  • The look on the Behemoth's face when he gets electrocuted is cartoony but fun! Also funny is his fuming puppet right after!

  • At least, we're now getting somewhere. No matter how disconnected this arc was in the beginning, the storyline is still compelling. And the Colan-Ayers duo was not bad at all so 4 stars.

I guess we can add quicksand to the list of things Stan has no idea how they work?

When I read the first Namor arc, I liked it quite a bit, and had to ask myself why this run has a bad reputation. I suppose *this* arc answers that question.

How in the hell did Krang get from the Puppet Master's house (in New York?) all the way to the gates of Atlantis in the time it took Namor to whip up a completely ridiculous whirlpool?

And have enough time left to shoot a guard, sneak up behind Dorma, convince her to marry him and give her time to relay the news to Vashti?
