Issue Review

jfpj1991

I much anticipated this issue. We saw in the issues of Tales of Suspense (and Tales to Astonish) that Tony was going to testify for Senator Byrd’s committee and the Cosmic Cube in the hands of the Red Skull.

Tony seems to have decided tor relinquish his secrets regarding the Iron Man armor, and perhaps his secret identity as well. This makes the reader tense with the expectations of what to follow. I’ve been a fan of comic for years, but because I’ve never read this arc in particular, I do not know what exactly will happen with Tony’s identity and that keeps me on the edge of my seat.

I'd like to see Tony Stark try to get into a congressional hearing with that suit full of iron today. He'd be in a cell so fast..

The Iron Man story has some great setups. I loved this issue.

I'm getting sick of every villian being defeated by their own vanity. It seems like most of the villians are the same.

Already I'm taken out of the story when Tony Stark is dropped at the airport 6 minutes before his flight and he's told he has plenty of time to get to his plane. Oh, the simpler days...

Tony starts to give himself up to the US government, then changes his mind during lax old-fashioned airport security and decides his wants to make a huge entrance as Iron Man instead. This conveniently sets up an opportunity for a Cold War battle!

I don't know about the sixties but usually armed escorts accompany you all the way to your destination.

Wow, this was boring. I did like Iron Man heading to Washington for the committee meeting, but of course he's intercepted by Titanium Man.

Great setup issue. I can see this playing out like the end if the first Iron Man flick. He beats this titanium thing, makes it to the hearing, and just blurts out "I am Iron Man!"

4 stars.

Gahwd I love Gene Colan's art. Definitely the best penciler I've seen so far.

3 stars for the return of the Titanium Man!!!

Cover Me - Love the cover! It's like Frankenstein rising!!!

Cannonball - Great scene of Titanium Man taking a MISSILE to the gut!!!

Surprise - Also, another great scene when Titanium Man tears out of the rocket to greet Iron Man!!

'Nuff Said - "Into the missile with him!"-Comrade

I wish the Senator Byrd subplot would go away. At least we get some of Colan's best artwork.

you might just call me nitpicky, but the USSR launches an intercontinental missile over Washington, and in 1966, no less...
and the reaction of the US consists in intercepting it with one fighter jet!
oh wait, there's Iron Man in the air, visiting the countryside, why bother about total nuclear war?

That's a pretty bold statement right there on the splash page... "NO ONE has the right to defy the wishes of his government... not even IRON MAN!"

Pretty standard fare. The Cap story was decent. The Iron Man story was pretty boring. Red Skull is an idiot. 3 stars.

Nice paneling. Fairly solid story. Didn't like "exactly 203 seconds". Both too precise and WAY too fast. When was the last time anyone said "approximately"? Russia to Washington DC in less than 4 minutes??? Even if we put aside the infeasibility of that, the next few panels wouldn't have had time to happen...

  1. No one has the right to defy the wishes of his government…not even Iron Man!” And to think, the Holocaust was only about twenty years ago.
  2. ”How could anyone ever suspect that an entire suit of super-powerful iron armor is neatly stored away inside my lightweight attaché case?” They couldn’t, Tony, because “lightweight iron armor” is an oxymoron.
  3. ”It’s still about six minutes till flight time! You should’t have any trouble making it, Mr. Stark!” Aaah, the good old days…
  4. ”Impact should result exactly 203 seconds from launch!” Um…if the Soviets have missiles that can travel 70,000 miles an hour, the US has far, far bigger problems than Titanium Man.

This was fairly lame, but the art was good, and I sort of liked Tony’s soul-searching. ★★½

  • That's my line – "Hello gents! Why all the hardware?" (Tony Stark)

  • Whatever the comic I'm about to read, I'm always excited when I see that Gene Colan is the artist. And I'm never disappointed. There is not a single page for which I don't stop to admire the perfect beauty of it.

  • The footnote about Happy Hogan almost dying while trying to save Iron Man made me realize that for the readers of that time, it's been almost a year since he learned his secret identity. I can easily imagine their excitement after waiting a whole month over a compelling cliffhanger, or their disappointment when an issue fell flat.

  • Isn't it the first time that Stark mentions officially that he is one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s executives?

  • I guess now I can safely say that you cannot be a good guy if you are wearing a monocle.

  • As others have pointed out, I find it hard to believe that not only the Reds were able to send a missile all the way to Washington DC in 203 seconds (really?!!!!), but also that the Americans' only response was to send one jet to intercept it. Lost a star on that one!

  • 4 stars for a very intriguing first part and for outstanding art. t is a bit odd that I'm much more interested in Senator Byrd's storyline than the fight with Titanium Man. But we've been following this plot for very long and it looks like we might have some resolve in the next few issues. Hopefully!
