Issue Review

Always great to read a comic that isn't just another hero versus villain fight. A comic that is an actual story.

And this is one of those, a story about the main character going out for a night on the town. Because Mark Gruenwald writes Jessica as such an interesting character, this is a very enjoyable read. Even before anything happens. And, eventually, plenty happens.

In the 1970s Marvel tried several times to recreate the feeling of those early Spider-Man comics. Usually failing. But the early scenes of this comic, showing Jessica repairing her costume and having a disastrous flight around the neighbourhood, really do a fantastic job of capturing the sense of being a super-powered human in a realistic world.

Even the way the series deals with the repercussions from the previous storyline, and how it may or may not affect Jessica's job, speak of a writer who thinks things through. A writer who is a storyteller.

Later on in the issue we get some action when somebody accidentally acquires Jessica's costume and starts to wear it on the dance-floor! Something guaranteed to give the reader a chuckle. And certainly something inventive. The sort of thing that could easily happen to Peter Parker.

This is a fresh and fun read, from the start to very near the finish. In fact, the only thing that feels like a tired old cliche is the out-of-nowhere cliffhanger ending.

8/10
