Issue Review

jfpj1991
   March 26, 2013
The first portion of this issue was an enjoyable read on some levels. It was good to see Sub-Mariner finally get things settled between him and Lady Dorma, and him and Warlord Krang. We get to see Namor battle in combat against his foe. The bad parts of this are the exile to an isolated place again. Even if he is kept guarded this is an arch enemy, heís cunning. You have to order his execution. Assassination attempts cannot be tolerated. Thatís just simple politics.

The Hulk portion of the issue was very enjoyable. We see some great battle scenes against the Hulk Killer. To top it all off, we see Bruce Banner in an actual way that advances the plot, not just a quick change back and forth. This helps make him a hero in the eyes of the Army. It is a touching moment. Boomerang, while looking ridiculous, isnít as bad of a foe as the Toad Men, so seeing him again in the future wonít be the worst thing to happen.

If I were just rating the Hulk portion, it would be a 4 out of 5 star issue, but with the addition of Namorís story into the issue, I give it a solid three out of five stars.

The Hulk part of this issue was pretty good. I'm still not exactly sure about what Ross thinks of him now though...

Boomerang may have the worst fashion sense of any Marvel character. I guess this new costume is an improvement over the old one, but anything short of a g-string would have been. This new costume is still fugly.

When Namor finished his trident quest, he had Krang defeated and rather than execute him, he banished him. Are we in for a never-ending cycle of Krang returns?
Hulk was as great a story as usual. Saving Thunderbolt from his own folly should allow for some room to breathe, but I doubt it.

I like Namor, but you already banished the guy the first time....... that obviously didn't work.... what the hell makes you think that just cause you kick hisa**in front of everybody, now it won't happen again????

Oh thank god, one of Hulk's identity is finally out in the open..... now we get to go into the stage of Betty being in love with him because he's so misunderstood.......

Add me to the list of people who think Namor needs to just kill Krang. Seriously, what does a supervillain need to do in the 60s to get executed? Doctor Strange proved to be the smartest of all these clowns by just straight-up erasing memories. Meanwhile Namor's all like "send him to the corner."

I nearly punched a wall when Boomerang popped up in the Hulk story. Lamest villain since Paste Pot Pete.

Just 1 star for Krang getting a time out to think about what he has done!

Wild Bill - I like Everett's artwork, but I wish he would update his robots, monsters, and gadgets. Stop living in the 40's and get with the times....60's that is!!!

'Nuff Said - "Thus far have you come--but no further shall you go!"-Yoda...uh, I mean Namor

Wearing armor made out of an alkali metal underwater? Back to chemistry class Stan.

Banner looks ripped. Maybe the whole gamma ray thing is a put on and it's really all just roid rage.

Really Boomerang again, so soon! God I hate this guy, and hope he gets killed off in a future ish!
2 Stars - Only because I would rather read this than another Thing and Torch story.

This was a fitting end to Namor's story arc, and I like that Bill Everett finally got the chance to revisit the character he created all those years ago. I loved seeing Everett's style on the splash page, and I like how he draws the underwater scenes as well... both reminded me of Sub-Mariner's first appearance in Marvel Comics #1.

In addition, we get lots of good large action shots of the "splash page" variety, and good excitement with Namor rescuing Lady Dorma and fighting Krang not once, but twice.

Of course, Lord Vashti could have cleared all of this up issues and issues ago if he just explained Dorma's motivations from the start, the doddering old fool.

The Namor arc is finished. Finally. Well, it was more of a mercy killing, really. Like what Namor needs to do to Krang.

A decent ending to a not so decent story-arc around Namor, Krang, Dorma, the Behemoth, treachery, devotion, amnesia, fearful surface dwellers, a little bit of Hulk and Retribution!

Could have all been executed better imo, but the ending was well done(except the sentence for Krang of course! (damn, you comics code))

Here we are. #500 in the order, unless some more weird anthology titles are added, and the end of a plodding Namor arc. Hopefully they go somewhere with him next.

The round-up:
So, because I'm sure someone totally asked for this, I'm going to give a rough overview of my favorites in the order so far. I figure I'll do this every hundred issues or so from now on. I'll do the past 500 for now because this the first time.

***** Spider-Man and Fantastic Four. Spider-Man came out swinging and hasn't stopped yet, while Fantastic Four overcame a fairly rough start to become the series that I'm looking forward to most, besides Spidey.

**** Thor and X-Men. Though X-Men hasn't been good for the past few issues, the story around the Juggernaut arc or near it was really good. Thor was kinda dumb at first but it's definitely gone pretty far, and has a lot more potential now that we're seeing Asgard more and more

*** Avengers, Iron Man, Hulk (Tales to Astonish), Nick Fury, and Captain America. All of these books have had some really really dumb issues (That issue where Tony's cousin makes him see aliens(?), post-Hydra-pre-secret-empire Nick Fury, WWII recaps) But they've also had some really friggin awesome issues (Cosmic Cube, battle against Titanium Man, fight against Hydra, Cap being broody, Hulk being misunderstood and not just a dumb brute).

** Namor, Daredevil. Namor and Daredevil both happen to feature the worst soap opera love dumbness in the order thus far, but have had some fairly decent issues to balance it out. Daredevil is more just spurts of greatness (Spider-Man issue(s) and the first issue, for example) surrounded by mediocrity, while Namor rarely rises above C level.

*Ant/Giant Man and the Wasp, The Incredible Hulk (v1). Hank is a huge whiny man baby and Janet is thisty af. Despite that I

  Oh a character limit lovely.

I basically said that the first six issues of Hulk were bad with lame lame lame villains, Hank and Jan were a guilty pleasure. Anthology titles got 0 stars and Solo Torch and Thing got negative five stars.
