If only people in the 60's knew about asbestos. Guy wearing the suit might have well called it his cancer suit.

Almost lost one star for the last three panels, but as the first good torch 'solo' adventure it keeped it.

Will Liber keep the better taste? It's Lieber's third good one!!

Must be nice to have "unstable molecules" lying around to just fashion a new suit out of lol.

  Webslinger Says:

The story was also a dare for sure, it is tense, not easy reading, there are very few jokes, and none from Peter if I am correct. But c'mon, Sandman, Kraven and Vulture got out of jail and nobody told us? Do they keep this right?

I cringed when I read what was basically "Everyone was just pretending to not know you were the Human Torch." And the fact he claimed he always knew the Acrobat was a villain is bull. So Johnny's thought bubbles were all just part of the his clever ruse huh?

So not only is our hero a liar but also a hypocrite, because he was criticizing Spider-Man awhile back for wanting a salary from the F4. Man lol, I'm thinking far to deeply about this plot hole ridden issue .

terrible villain.the story was just awful. I don't understand why the human torch gets his own, badly written thing. He doesn't deserve it.

The worst part.... If I didn't read any of these strange tales comics.... I would really like Torch

I can't stand solo Torch stuff, but I'm giving this an extra star for at least addressing how jaw-droppingly idiotic it was to have him doing that "secret identity" crap. The explanation was hilarious..."oh, they were just humoring you!"

  Phantasmagoria Says:
  2012-10-23 10:12:36
This is a better than average story for this run, though Johnny is swayed to The Acrobat's side entirely too easily.

  Spider-Borg Says:

So tired of these torch stories. He is easily the worst main character in the order so far.... Even worse than ant man IMO

  Robareid Says:

Well that was one of Torch's better solo stories. They did a nice job in getting rid of the stupid secret identity stuff, and I got a chuckle out of him bullshitting at the end about him knowing Acrobat was a bad guy all the time. It's the kind of thing I'd do lol, as a teenager

Nothing brilliant, but better ***

Of course Reed can plow all the money into research, he's already a millionare... Reed's being as much a prick as ever. A cheap prick too. Johnny should join the Superheroes Union! I guess Reed wouldn't be so smug when Spider-Man and the Hulk starts picketing his headquarter.

  leisch Says:

It takes the whole FF to stop a burglar who's merely a really good acrobat. That;s embarassing.

Dick Ayers art was pretty good. Decent story too. I liked how they cleared up Torch's secret identity problem. The new yellow costume was neat and I kinda liked The Acrobat.

Still not a huge fan of these solo Torch adventures. They are slightly below average for me. Asbestos again, really?

  VenomousIntent Says:

The secret identity is dead. About time! Marvel must have finally figured out that 1)their readers aren't stupid or 2) how to finally build a proper continuity within their still new universe. Maybe these Human Torch comics will finally become good.

  Locust75 Says:

One star for the Acrobat and Johnnys antics.

The Darling One - Dick Ayers art is refreshing.

Secret Identity - So, Johnny practices outside of town. Goes into the city just to change. Then walks back to his house in the suburbs???

Comics Code - How did they get "Torrid" past the censors? You do an internet search today at it warns you before proceeding.

Ambiguously Gay Duo - Ugh, those costumes are hideous, and the berets don't help either. I'm surprised they don't have matching ascots with their cigarette holders.

Cold Blooded - Not only did the Acrobat shoot Johnny, but if his gun didn't jam he would of killed him!!!

Flame Off - So, Johnny just throws his costume in the trash. A costume made of unstable molecules!

'Nuff Said - "Holy cow! and all this time I thought I was hiding it so cleverly! Well, I'll be--"-Johnny

2. Finally...they give up on it
3. Its asbestos...but liquidier
Pretty weak...2 stars.

Loved the art, hated the explanation of the secret identity thing. And those costumes! And "The Torrid Twosome" sounds like a porno title. They're not helping with those berets either. Yikes!

  rainbowsad Says:

As ridiculous an excuse as that was, it's about time they drop the whole Human Torch's secret identity thing. Not gonna lie though, it's still pretty amusing to think that everyone in town was just humoring him... Also, was this the first issue where someone actually got shot?

  quartertwain Says:

2 stars because these zany eccentric villains give me a kick. That first part where the Acrobat is talking to the Torch and showing off, interrupting himself with things like "watch this cartwheel!" was pretty hilarious to me. The story itself and the hand waving of the whole secret identity thing were borderline garbage though.

  • THANK GOD, they put an end to that secret identity nonsense!

  • It also looks like Sue finally found some way to get herself useful. I guess fan mail paid off.

  • Honestly, can anyone blame the Torch for wanting a salary?

  • Hopefully someone got a patent for the unstable molecules? They became quite fashionable in the 60’s and anybody could find them.

  • The Torrid Twosome? Please! Children are reading this!

  • Ayers draws a better Sue than Kirby, although his Thing is not good. Overall, the art was pretty fair.

  • Hey, except for the part where Johnny joins the Dark Side a little too easily, I think that there is finally an improvement in the series here. A villain not too crappy, a more solid storyline… Hope, friends. Hope!

I love how the Torch melts through an expensive bank door but has no thought of consequences afterward. I guess Reed will take it out of the salary he's not paying him.

  Shentenza Says:
  2016-07-13 23:25:29
I am going back and forht on this issue. There are a few things to like about, first they end the stupid secret identity crap, but the explanation for it is even more stupid.

Second, Human Torch did not use another stupid new skill like in the last issues, but making a new costume with the molecules, god dammit!

Third, the overall plot, by making Torch feel under apreciated makes sense, he is young and would fall for it, but again he is protecting is identity to have enough time for himself, but would work with the Acrobat for fame and money? They did not think that through.

And the last panels ruin the whole story by sying he knew it all along. Torch is coming across as not very likeable with a bad personality and he will probably die from cancer.

  Murphynator42 Says:
  2016-10-23 17:30:17
Anyone who opens with "This is where he lives. Now to put my plan into action" most definitely lacks good intentions. As bad as the issue itself was, at least the fact that (obviously) EVERYBODY knows that Johnny is the Torch finally got out

  ScottG12 Says:
  2016-11-06 10:29:38
If his identity was so well known, then how come villians weren't able to easily get this information in the past? Oh and I hope the Torch doesn't keep on leaving the F4 only to return a few pages later.. This is the second or third time he's done this now.

  Hobbes543 Says:

Despite some strangeness and awkwardness, I found this to be one of the more enjoyable human torch stories of this early part of the order

  CrazyforRAMU Says:
  2017-04-09 15:34:25
This is the issue where the writers seem to get on board with the feeling that Johnny's heart is in the right place but he really is an idiot. First, they reveal that the whole town is humoring him about his secret identity - which I found hilarious - and then he gets bamboozled by this ridiculous d-grade villain. I wholeheartedly agree that Johnny is clearly lying about detecting the Acrobat's sinister intentions at any point prior to burning through that vault door. Johnny clearly wants to be a hero but it's just as clear that he's not exactly the smartest tool in the shed.

Best Strange Tales in the Order so far. Everything seems to be back to normal now with the good secret ID retcon. Torch was too convincing about his plan to trick The Acrobat, I think he even tricked his thought bubbles, Reed, and the editor's narration.
