I can appreciate the fact that The Laser is motivated by something other than world domination.

"See the man in the strange costume! He is a bad man! He is robbing a bank! He is called the Laser! Can you tell why he is called the Laser?"

Was this written for a 3 year old?

For a super-hero a lot of the show a very low IQ too often. Page 11 dialogue with Goliath and Laser Man is a perfect example of that: "So suppose you come down here and talk it over. That equipment you're smashing costs good money", while thinking "If that is a laser beam he's using - we are up against the deadliest menace imaginable!"

That is why THE HULK is the best ever. Less talk, more smash! And he still has higher IQ than the Avengers combined.

I was looking forward to an end of all the bickering, but I think it's preferable to the horrible one-liners and corny camaraderie.

Making Laser to fight against whole Avengers and still perform pretty well is hard to believe in. And that's what makes the whole story rather bad. Not to mention a lot of unnecessary talking.

Oh no! The laser is breaking all these things that were completely useless! What will we do about this building that was about to be demolished? And these planes and ships out of business? It must be a truly deadly menace.

I thought Cap's shield was supposed to be tough. It's stood up to even the Human Torch's nova flame, yet it can't handle a simple laser?

The team has fought villains with death rays and laser weapons before. No biggie.

  Garfieldicus Says:

"The larger my beam is the more damage it can do!" ... yeah, let's add "lasers" onto the list of things that Stan doesn't understand how they work, along with "magnets" and "women".

For a second, I stupidly believed that Wasp was going to save the day. I should have known she couldn't understand that stuff like a man.

Also, maybe if one of the four brilliant Avengers thought of taking away the bad guys laser while he was unconscious, they could have spent the rest of the issue eating shawarma.

He robs banks, then returns the money! He totally blows stuff up, like buildings and planes and boats that were gonna be blown up anyway! He creepily stalks women he's never spoken to! He causes slightly inconvenient traffic jams! You can keep your Magnetos and your Dr. Dooms. Galactus? Not even in the conversation. Clearly the deadlest, most badass villain in all the Marvel Universe is the Living Laser...

  scottyjrules Says:

And then they went the extra mile and threw in some casual sexism to close out the issue. I'm giving this 3 stars for the crazy amount of stupid going on in this one...

Docked points for the Avengers being too stupid to remove his weapons while he was unconscious, as well as the extremely casual sexism at the end. Also, what was up with that writing style at the beginning? I think the pressure was really getting to Stan.

  TheAmazingGatorMan Says:

I already want to give it a 1 star rating... The intro reads like one of my daughters books... "See the man in the strange costume. He is a bad man. He is robbing a bank. He is called the laser. Can you tell why he is called the laser?..." Holy insult your intelligence, Batman! It's a toddler book!!!!

3 stars for the 1st app of the Living Laser! Ok, he gets a rough start here, but he does get better through the years. With the "living" part of his name becoming important!

Oh, Behave - I recommend when ever you read the word "laser". To pronounce it like Dr. Evil does with hand quotes "lay---zers"!!!

Glazed - @jfpj1991: Dispatch just radioed out that a fresh batch of donuts were ready!!!

No Relation - Hmmm, after meeting Lucy Barton, I wonder how they will come up with Hawkeye's real name later...

No Prize - But, Hank is stuck at 10ft, not 12ft...

South Park - Living Laser destroying condemned objects reminds me of Butters Pro. Chaos!!!

'Nuff Said - "Hawkeye! What's that sudden hum??"-Cap

Wait... the Avengers are just hanging around taking a breather after a vigorous round of serpent polishing? Poor Wasp!

And Hawkeye enjoys working out with Cap so much he gets a swelled head?

And Bill Foster wants to get back in the harness with Hank?

It's like a wall-to-wall orgy in Avengers mansion!

I'm going to submit a rewrite of this story, swapping out the Avengers and replacing them with some of our neighborhood cats.

Living Laser: Look, kitties! *points laser down the street and turns it on*

Cats take off after the red dot his laser produces.

Hey, at least it's more entertaining than what was published 50 years ago, right?

  Judassiah Says:

+ Goliath singlehandedly creamed the Living Laser very easily, where Cap and Hawkeye couldn't touch him. Nice going Hank!
+ Janet van Dyne got a tiny bit of character development with her society pal Lucy Barton.
+ Stan Lee is about to shove off some of the workload. Hopefully this works out for us!

+ Bill Foster is back.
+ Looks like the Avengers are getting some nice Stark Industries funding for their vehicles.

- Captain America and Hawkeye drop the ball so badly here that this affected the rating.

2 stars. I like new villains, but the Avengers performed so poorly here, despite Goliath putting up a good show.

Woah, rollercoaster of comments here! Before I address anyone else's, here was mine (written before I read yours):

The story of the Living Laser, a villain more considerate of public property than most superheroes!
* * *
Oh, how I chortle when I read these old issues with state-of-the-art technology that is now totally dated: "If that is a laser, we're up against the deadliest enemy imaginable"! Ho ho! Now why didn't Reed think of using a laser against Galactus? With both the Power of Cobalt and lasers, intergalactic threats should tremble at the mere mention of Earth!

Now, what bothers many amuses me. Lasers as a threat; kiddy-style writing (come ON guys, it's clearly tongue-in-cheek, they're not trying to insult our intelligence, they're trying to amuse us. Even back then, they were aware a large proportion of their readership was teens and adults); sexism; the Living Laser actually presenting a clear and present danger to the Avengers.

To address specifically @andyzh , lasers could have been set to a certain distance so as not to burn through the floor, but having said that, based on Stan's understanding of lasers, the fact that they didn't was probably his oversight than his deep knowledge of the technology.
