Issue Synopsis

Colonel Nick Fury, heavily armored inside an anti-shock seat, is getting ready for a test of the Destruct Horn, a weapon using the force of sound waves. However, his colleagues strongly object because of the potential danger of a sonic backlash. Stubborn as usual, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s director proceeds with the test and as predicted, the backlash sends his seat crashing across the room and Fury suffers severe concussions. Nevertheless, the result is conclusive, for the sonic beam reaches its target half a continent away, destroying everything in its narrow path until it detonates a nuclear missile in the middle of a desert.

Watching the operation from the Helicarrier, the officials of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Plans and Operation Section conclude that the existence of the rumored Overkill Horn is possible. Preparing to leave the flying fortress, a general and a senator are discussing the threat. The general is suspicious that this real danger may not necessarily come from a particular nation, but cannot explain further. The senator, on his way to meet Fury at his headquarters, intends to learn more.

Later, in SHIELD Armory, agents are testing more weapons while worrying about their director who got badly hurt from the backlash. It appears also that Dum Dum was also injured while trying to get his friend to safety. Pushed on a wheelchair by agent Sitwell, Fury comes in and denies being put out of action. He pulls out a sound gun and takes the hard way to demonstrate its effect by shooting it at the agents. Of course, the gun was harmless, but it generated wave patterns on a sonar screen. Fury orders his agents to keep an eye open at all times to detect anything resembling these sound images which would indicate that an Overkill Horn has been activated. Then Dum Dum joins them to announce the arrival of Senator Dudley who wants to see the director.

In the next room, the senator is standing beside a new kind of camera projector. The device shows images of Don Caballero, someone whom Fury asked the C.I.A. to provide some intel on. Caballero has agreed to make a film to introduce himself. Self-proclaimed leader of the jet-set, the man claims to be the richest man south of the border and proudly demonstrate his reputation for throwing the most glamorous parties around the world. He is now preparing one in the ruins of the ancient city of Karnopolis and invites Colonel Fury as his guest of honour. At Sitwell's surprise, Fury decides to accept the invitation.

Meanwhile, some S.H.I.E.L.D. agent has sneaked inside a temple in Karnopolis and found proof that Hydra still lives. But a pharaoh statue comes to life behind him and using some kind of ray, the robot renders him unconscious. Hydra agents pick up the body and Don Caballero comes in, explaining how he was suspicious of the undercover SHIELD agent who was too insisting that Fury would be invited at his party. He then orders that the snooping agent be put in a brain-washing unit to have all memory of the incident erased.

Don Caballero, who is actually the new Supreme Hydra, later rejoins his guests, secretly gloating over the fact that he is in control of the Overkill Horn and can take over the world whenever he chooses.

At the same time, at S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury broadcasts an announcement to all his agents that he is taking a leave. He orders them to dedicate all their efforts in trying to detect signs of the Overkill Horn. After commending them all for their work, he announces that he is putting agent Jasper Sitwell in command during his absence, much to the young agent's surprise. Just as he tells him that he suspects Don Caballero to be the leader of the reborn Hydra, some sonic boom suddenly blasts the area, confirming the existence of the Overkill Horn.

The exit of Kaluu and Umar's appereance is very sudden and comes as a hasty idea. Just get rid one baddie and quickly bring another. But it's good to know that Hydra lives.

I actually prefer Everett's work on this to Ditko's. The bottom left panel on page 6 confirms this for me.

I think I'm simpy... not a Ditko fan.

1 star for Don Caballero and his amazing champagne glasses of sound!!!

Hot Dog - I love that plane being destroyed in a no fly zone, and the pilots act like it's no big deal...

Double Talk - On the Hellicarrier it seemed that Sen. Dudley didn't know what was going on, but later with Fury he did??

Just A Swinging - So, HYDRA created zip lines!!??

Karnopolis/Karnapolis - Well, how ever you spell it; the robot statue guards were cool...

What's In A Name - Like others have mentioned about too many sound weapons showing up lately. The Overkill Horn is a fitting name!!

'Nuff Said - "He whipped it out from beneath his robe...!"-SHIELD Agent

The sonic blast test was pretty cool, with Fury literally getting blown off the rails by sound. I liked Pg3/P5 as his protective suit starts to shred from the force.

I too got a kick out of the casual attitude of the pilots who carelessly flew into the no-fly zone and had their plane destroyed!

  1. It seems…unlikely that a highly destructive sonic beam could trigger a nuclear warhead to go off. To destroy it, sure. But to trigger it? How?
  2. Pn. 5-3: Er…there are plenty of countries without nuclear weapons. Although maybe there weren’t any rogue states that weren’t allied to either the U.S. or the U.S.S.R. in 1966.
  3. Pp. 5–6: I like seeing the S.H.I.E.L.D. rumor mill.
  4. Pn. 11-1: So does Hydra have a mole inside S.H.I.E.L.D.?
  5. Pn. 12-2: “But suddenly, without any warning…” there’s a warning whine!

Apparently there’s a goof in the Order, as Hydra reappeared in a Captain America comic before this. I’ll have to try to get that fixed. ★★★

I still love these Nick Fury stories, but between Klaw over in FF, and the ...*ahem*...overkill horn, I have to wonder just how exactly Stan and Co think sound works. I mean, I kinda get where a little ignorance would get the stuff they do with magnets, transistors, lasers and the like, but we encounter sound every day...

Just out of curiosity, what was fixed, exactly? Because Cap's story still appears like 50 stories before this one in the Order? Nevertheless, I understand that Hydra was never totally eradicated and that Agent 13's abduction may have been what tipped Fury off on Hydra's rebirth. Still, I believe these two issues are too far apart.

  • That's my line "So that's why this area was off-limits!" (Dumbass stray pilot) Yeah, big oops moment! And consider yourself lucky the Comics Code kept you from being blown up along with your jet! Fun panel though!

  • That's my line too "If I don't come outta this, Dum Dum... keep the tests goin' until they work!" (Colonel Fury) Wasn't there any way to activate the test Destruct Horn remotely? How can you expect anyone would volunteer if you, of all people, die in the first test? And why not use an LMD to begin with?

  • I know the writers want to make Fury like the most badass director, but his badassery and imprudence are way over the top. And the way he addresses his subordinates is unbearable. If you're trying to be rude to people, at least try to be original and find some new phrases. It would not feel so bad if Stan showed more diversity in Fury's expressions but for now, this is getting old. Minus 1 star.

  • Maybe it's because I'm not an expert in acoustics, but I did not feel that a focused sonic beam is total nonsense. Well, at least, it makes much more sense than solidified sound!

  • Again, Fury shooting his Sound Gun at his own people shows his total disrespect for his staff. Was that really necessary? Who would want to work for such a jerk?

  • I can totally picture myself as a guest at a rave on an iceberg!

  • Buscema's pencils over Kirby's layouts totally worked for me. This story is not too bad as a set-up for what is coming and I'm intrigued by this new Don Caballero.3 stars.
