Issue Synopsis

On the verge of fatal exhaustion, alone in the Black Knight's castle, Iron Man is desperately trying to get help. Calling his lab, his message gets through and reaches Pepper Potts. Thinking Stark must be out having fun in some night club, the faithful employee rushes to Iron Man while cursing her boss for being so heartless.

Pepper finds the Golden Avenger agonizing in the castle and drags him to the car. The hero plugs his armor into the dashboard cigarette lighter to recharge a bit and asks his savior to drive to Stark's factory. When they reach the lab, she follows his instruction and connects him to the right circuits to get him fully recharged. During the process, she gives him an update on Happy's condition, informing him that the hospital intends on using an Enervator on the patient. Iron Man objects, saying that Stark's invention has not been tested and it could cause dangerous side-effects on Happy.

While Iron Man is recharging, he takes a phone call from an angry Senator Byrd who warns him that he is coming to New York with a subpoena to get Stark to comply and reveal who Iron Man is. That being the last of his concerns, the armored hero interrupts the recharging process and flies to the hospital. On his way there, he comes to realize that his attempt to have Pepper hate Stark is a failure since she has now transferred her love to Iron Man and they are back to point A.

In the operating room, the doctors have no choice but to use the Enervator on Happy, for he would most likely die otherwise. However as they proceed, instead of healing the man, the machine turns Happy into a creepy creature that the health professionals immediately dub the "Freak". The monster wakes up and goes on a rampage. Iron Man arrives just in time to intervene, but he is caught between a rock and a hard place, not wanting to further injure his best friend, yet still responsible for the damages the creature is causing.

The changes on Happy's body have greatly increased his strength, making him a real threat to Iron Man. After exchanging a few blows with the hero, the Freak flees the hospital, followed by the Avenger who must make sure the creepy man stays in the suburbs and does not enter more populated areas. Seeing his friend approaching the power station, Iron Man is afraid of the damage the Freak could do there.

And just like that Pepper "realizes" she "loves" Iron Man. A man she knows nothing about and whose attitude she had hated for quite a while. Please spare me.

Stan never met a romantic entanlement he didn't like. Pepper goes from loving Tony, to loving Happy, to hating Tony, to loving Iron Man in the space of a handful of issues.
The Freak is my least favorite IM villain.
Gene Colan on his classic Iron Man run!

And not so much as a "And the Black Knight is dead now." I guess he wasn't a favorite with the bullpen.

Early Iron Man has turned into quite the nice surprise. Enjoying his stories quite a bit. There's more character development goign on, Stark's heart issues are finally having more serious ramifications instead of being resolved in 3 panel (Need a recharge... Got it!). Even the soap opera aspects are being executed.

I really like the panel style they use in this Iron Man issue. It that started with the previous one. In a page you have 3 or 4 big panels. 6 tops. Instead of 9 small panels overfilled with dialogue balloons.... It feels very modern and I am really looking forward to the establishment of this style.

If someone gets incredibly strong due to a ray-emitting machine, check their forehead. If the brow area is bigger than the cranium, watch out -- the strength increase has also sapped their intelligence, like one end of a pulley going up when the other goes down.

At least Pepper is getting a little more character development at this point than in her first few appearances when she was just "catty secretary who's always trying to catch the boss's eye and snubbing his chauffeur."

People fall in and out of love so quickly in the 616.
The best thing about these Iron Man stories is that they're short. I can get through them faster. Not like the dreaded Daredevils.

For a second there I thought Pepper was going to go to the castle to save Iron Man, and learn that he is really Tony Stark. Which could have been a nice moment between the two characters, and certainly gone a long way to sell a romance. But that is not Stan's way. Stan understands that there can be no true romance without first having the love triangles, and much anger, and many misunderstandings.

Oooookay. Crazy, totally unrealistic science? Check. Bad lover's triangle melodrama? You betcha. Stan is back!

What is an enervator that uses cobalt? Where are the medical ethics of this hospital's staff? How can they use a machine of Stark's in a way he hasn't authorized? Guess they're unconcerned with Stark's, or their own, legal liabilities. Art was awesome. Story was terrible.

Does this take place in New York or Washington? The Black Knight's castle was supposed to be outside Washington, but Pepper drives there and back in no time, and then Senator Byrd calls Iron Man and threatens to go to New York and drag him back to Washington.

I can't begin to fathom why Tony Stark would build a "ray" that has the possibility of turning people into monsters. Ok. It was untested, but c'mon. What the heck did you build it out of?

Really didn't care for this one. The art is good. Far more realistic than most of the other titles, but the plot is pretty terrible all around.

They probably hadn't made the decision that Black Knight was decisively dead at that point. They probably thought he'd be coming back. Even Tony wasn't sure whether the trees broke his fall or not.

I liked catty secretary Pepper. She was drawn plain, not pretty, so Stark wasn't interested. Much prefer that to the two-way assumed unrequited love shtick that is repeated in almost every title.

You mean we've got "Return of the Freak" to look forward to? And here I was thinking he'd be gone for good by the end of the story arc.

I give this one an extra star because of Gene Colan's Pepper. Other than that, the mouse is now on stilts.

  • That's my line "It's called an Enervator... It's Tony Stark's latest invention!" (Pepper Potts) I don't think that as a patient, I'd be delighted to be treated with something called the Enervator. Sounds more like something similar to my brother-in-law, you know, that makes your hair rise and your teeth clench!

  • I'm repeating myself but man do I love Colan's art! Just as he did not too long ago with the Sub-Mariner, he takes this series to a new level of quality and maturity. His style suits Iron Man stories perfectly. Where Kirby is a master of action scenes, crowds and complex machinery, Colan makes everything better with his precision in the details with the right dosage of emotions and just enough darkness to keep the suspense mood .And fortunately for this series at the moment, Spolletta the Eraser is not there to ruin his artwork.

  • Great giant panel of the OR on page 8, quite comparable in quality to (yet very different from) an amazing OR scene made by King Kirby in Journey Into Mystery back in 1964.

  • Interesting twist, except for the silly let's-try-this-untested-and-potentially-dangerous-ray-on-him part! My first thought was that the side-effects would simply cause amnesia on Happy so he would forget his boss is Iron Man.

  • Only one thing bothered me though. Turning Happy into Uncle Fester really was not necessary for this plot. I understand people's fascination with Frankenstein movies back in the 60's, but still...

  • I really have no idea where this is going, but I'm liking it. No matter how powerful Iron Man can be, I love how deeply vulnerable the creators made him in this story from beginning to end. I think this series is slowly getting on a good trend. 4 stars, for hope!
