So who didn't see amnesia coming?

  smoothing8 Says:

I'm starting to like Adam Austin's art. It seemed really lackluster in the Sub-mariner run, but here on Iron Man it looks alot like Gene Colan.

Boo amnesia, such a cop out.

  chrys Says:

@smoothing8: That's because Adam Austin IS Gene Colan. He later drops the pseudonym.

I liked the ONE, TWO, THREE bit. Simple, yet dramatic. And silly, definitely silly. I'm a little disappointed by the amnesia. It would have made a much better story if Happy remembered what happened.

  leisch Says:

Ha! Mandarin proves he's smarter than the Thinker. Rather than try to open the case or allow Stark to open it, he tosses it!

Okay so in my comment last issue I said I wish that they would be done with the running out of power shtick, but it's kinda jarring that they seemed to forget that he was all out of power last time, and he's just fine now. Also how does nobody come to the conclusion that Happy was the Freak since he's standing there in the same hospital gown. That's like Superman wearing his tights but he puts on his glasses and everyone still thinks he's just Clark Kent.

Sounds like the marvel universe of the 60's could have really used a missed connections craigslist page

I was crossing my fingers for no amnesia, but then... amnesia. Poor Happy -- at least his face isn't stuck in a perpetual frown now? Maybe he forgot why he was such a constant sadsack, which is great -- he's much better-looking without it. I can only hope he never has to endure the indignity of a huge intelligence-sapping brow ridge and a half-hearted villain name again. Pepper, meanwhile, in classic close-to-the-action heroine style, doesn't wonder how Happy got to the factory wearing the same outfit as the Freak.

I wish they would use Mandarin to his full potential...those rings should make him a foe worthy of the Avengers, yet he hardly uses them...he's always pushing buttons and turning levers.
Dang this arc is dull...i hop something exciting happens soon.

I'm only an electrical engineer, but how would a signal feedback cause his suit to become red hot... Unless it was a commie signal... Get it? Red hot? Ok, I won't quit my day job.

This is really starting to become very far fetched. Amnesia is too much of a cop out. Peppers emotions annoy me. How no one else has figured out Stark's identity outside Happy is beyond me since Stark shows up out of nowhere.

3 stars and I'm probably being generous.

3 stars for the 1st app of Ultimo!!! I always liked the big lug. I mean, he's rising out of a freakin' volcano!!!

Keep It Classy - I do like the new Dragon Turtle statues that the Mandarin added to his castle!

'Nuff Said - "Happy? What kinda cornball name is that?"-Happy

  CosmicCostello Says:

I love that Tony just calmly dresses himself while Happy lies unconscious on the floor. Thank God the Freak arc is over though amnesia for Happy is so cliché.

Beginning of Mandarin arc is certainly more promising.

Pepper is insane, judgemental, and apparently not too smart. Give me Jan, Sharon Carter, Jean Grey, heck early Sue Storm, any day.

  GroovyGolem Says:

You'd be cranky too if your costume was as dumb as the Mandarin's.

  GroovyGolem Says:
  2015-05-12 06:55:58
I also love how the Mandarin has been biding his time in his fortress, stewing about the humiliating defeat he suffered at the hands of Iron Man, and that his revenge can only be had by delivering the "mightiest karate chop ever known!"

That made me LOL when I read it... you can tell he's really obsessed over it for a while, and his payback plan gets more specific each time. "When I see him again I will destroy him! NO! That's too easy! I want to hurt him the way he hurt me! I'll punch him in the head! NO! It's not humiliating enough! I'll karate chop him! NO! I will hit him with the MIGHTIEST karate chop ever known! NO WAIT!! I'll slap him with a shark... with a rabid howler monkey riding on its back... armed with a titanium spork! YES!!"

  Vancelot Says:

The drama with Senator Byrd is far better than the weird Freak story.

Love the slap across the face to wake up the man who was very recently near death.

  kungfufan Says:

Not a fan of the muscly, lycra-clad Mandarin presented here. Makes me recall those old He-man toys and cartoons. Might suit some villains, but not ol' Mandy.

  Urgat Says:
  2017-01-07 09:25:54
Loving that the Mandarin is back and also so sudden, out of nowhere....zapp...teleported! "Hey Tony, nice to have you here..."

But other than that this issue was not that good, too many slip-ups imho:
- Pepper (or all the others as well) not recognizing Happy as the former freak although he is wearing the same hospital-sheet and should be lying in said hospital

- Amnesia as the lamest excuse and bypass to Happy knowing the "secret"

- no one wondering where Tony came from all of a sudden

- no need to recharge (just putting it in the attache case) although he was so low on power that he couldn't even stand up

so on, so on...

Let's see...Happy has amnesia, Pepper is actually her evil twin, Betsy, The Mandarin dies and comes back, twice...ah, yes, As Sands Through the Hourglass, these are the Days of Our Iron Man...

  • That's my line – "And if you've ever read a duller synopsis than this one, it was probably also written by long-winded Stan!" (Narrator)

  • It's OK that Happy could have lost his hair during his first exposition to the ray, but I find it odd that he would recover his previous hairdo by reversing the ray.

  • Of course, Happy's knowledge of Iron Man's identity could not last for too long, right? *sigh*

  • Stark is all: "Ooh... Happy risked his life for me. I have to take care of him and forget about my own problems." Then he freakin' slaps his face to wake him up from a much needed rest. What the hell did you do that for, you hypocrite? To make sure your little secret is safe?

  • Just when I thought we'd finally get some resolve on the Senator's issues, Stark gets abducted! So unfair... for us!

  • The conclusion to the Freak arc was so predictable, there was not surprise at all. They even made it worse by making Pepper and the Senator unable to deduce who the Freak was. How very disappointing! Let's hope that the next couple of issues with the Mandarin and Ultimo can do better, but my expectations sank deep like 15 minutes ago. 2 stars only because the art is still nice (except for the Mandarin who was awful in this one).
