Having Hercules added to the Avengers (not officialy yet) is a good move and put more fresh air to the series. Thomas may write horrible X-Men but his Avengers aren't bad.

They basically turned Black Widow into a Spider-Man clone in this one. They even had her swinging from webs.

The seet-up for the next phase of Black Widow's story will pay off nicely soon. Good to have Hercules in the fold. He's always been a favorite character of mine in any fiction.

Well, I've really liked Hercules so far so this is a great addition...... I did think it was kinda funny that everybody was so totally different about Hercules joining the group, and surprised Hawkeye didn't take the opportunity to bitch about it.......

Well technically ol' Herc hasn't joined the Avengers yet, they just gave him a place to park his immortal butt. I don't know how well he's going to mesh with the team, considering how much they bicker already and he's a royal braggart.

The Avengers roster is getting pretty big, I wonder how long that will last.

  Anonymous Says:

Why does the Enchantress even care about the avengers now? Her initial interest was because Thor was with them.

FIle this one under throw at all at the wall and see what sticks. Way too much going on for any hope of a coherent plot.

Also, Jan clearly ate two dinners in this issue...

Also, just so we're on the same page...Black Widow, who saved the team from certain death one whole issue earlier, isn't trustworthy enough to be considered for the Avengers, but Hercules, who spent the entire issue trying to murder everyone, is welcomed into the fold without a vote. And Hawkeye is totally cool with this, despite spending the better part of the three issues fighting Goliath and walking out on the team over the Black Widow debate...

Well, this was a very busy issue.

A lot going on, but extremely entertaining. Hercules!!!! 4 stars for his joining and the Black Widow's first association with SHIELD

3 stars for Gods & Spies!!!

Cover Me - I just noticed the Enchantress in the background...and I've seen this cover a bunch of times!

Globe - On page 6, panel 5 I think Enchantress is showing Herc a alternate Earth. Where there is no Hudson Bay, or the Great Lakes!!!

Timeline - Shouldn't TOS #88b be next in the order showing Cap fighting the Swordsman & Power Man?

Bangs - Man, Quicksilver's hair has been getting wilder these last couple of issues!!

Promise Ring - Hmmm, Hawkeye changed his decoder ring from an "H" to a "A" since the last time we saw it.

?Question? - Enchantress said that a second exposure to brimstone would snap Herc out of it. Did I miss the first exposure???

Numbers - When Enchantress leaves, Hawkeye thinks to himself that she still could of took all seven of them all. Although, I only count six!!

'Nuff Said - "I've asked Jarvis the butler..."-Cap---thinking to himself

Okay, this just got good and now its over for a bit. Dang! It's good to see this change of pace though. Some many sub-plots added this ish. I like it!
4 Stars

It was decent. Natasha is moving into her super spy role and becoming very interesting.

I chuckled at Hawkeye saying that the team could just get a couple of burgers from across the street for dinner. Made me think of the shwarma scene from the first Avengers film.

And then Cap talks about having a ham and cheese sandwich. The preoccupation with food did seems strange in this issue.

And yes, Jan (and Hawk) ate two dinners in this issues. That would have been a funny character trait, if the constant size-changing actually took up a lot of energy, and so she constantly had to stuff her face all the time!

  Russ Says:

The addition of Hercules always bumps up the fun quotient in a story by a couple of notches. I did find it kind of odd that they argued against the Widow joining, claiming that there was no room for her, but accepted Herc with open arms. I'm thinking there's still a bit of animosity for her attack on the Avengers with Swordsman and Power Man, although that wasn't mentioned this issue like it was the previous issue.

I also think Odin and Zeus should get together and form a child-rearing conference. I swear those two aren't ever going to make father-of-the-year material. And Zeus is about as all-knowing and all-wise as Odin too (which appears to not say much at all!)

The comic cover makes me want a Marvel totem pole.

  Judassiah Says:

  + Hercules joins the team.
+ Black Widow joins SHIELD.
+ The Enchantress is so naughty!

+ Roy Thomas plotting big changes.
+ The addition of an inker to help Don Heck looks like it's going to do numbers for the art in this title.

2 stars. Thomas has been here for four issues, and we've seen Goliath really step up and gain his powers back, heavy Black Widow development, Hercules in the team and a smattering of character development with the other Avengers - specifically the budding friendship between Cap and Hawkeye.

  Judassiah Says:

Addendum: Not to mention the re-introduction of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver to the team! Yay for Roy Thomas!

I feel like Hercules, with his jovial bombast and Supreme self confidence, is Stan Lee's voice in its purest form, so the Roy Thomas version was a little disappointing. Still, it was a nice celebration shake up of the status quo.

  Allencthulhu Says:

One of the things we're seeing here, with the ability of reading the "next" issue right away instead of a month later, is Roy Thomas's development as a writer. Still, I only gave this one two stars. It was too disjointed with the whole first part being about the Black Widow and then the second act being all Hercules. Actually, you know what? After a few hours of thought, I'm giving it a third star.
