The second story really explores a new avenue with Captain America. And while it seems more than a little hokey... I love you... I want to propose, mystery girl... I can't marry you... Then, I will quit...

It is much more of a cliffhanger than Spider-Man. In the 50 issue, it was wrapped up pretty much before the next month. Steve also revealing his identity - after being under wraps for so long... Quite a change to the character and direction.

Why does this issue come before Tales of Suspense #92a?

  TStarnes Says:
  2012-07-17 12:52:17
Because the events in the second story happen before the events in the first story.

The two stories are not connected in any way.

Unsurprising though it was Cap revealing his identity was a nice touch, if only because his is one of the more superfluous secret identities. If they hadn't handled that date so horribly this would have been a really fantastic story.

Reaaaaally rushing the love and marriage thing, aren't we? Very creepy.

If you could take away all the love story parts, it would be a really nice issue.

I find it funny that right after Cap says it's time to find out who Steve Rogers really is, the next panel is him sitting in a wife-beater presumably watching TV.
Not much suspense here since we obviously know he comes back, but I can't help but wonder what this was like to a reader in the 60s. After all, he was a throwback to the war that had only been back for a few years. It was plausible that he may fade into the background.

Slow down, Cap. Everyone knows you don't propose until the third date (or at least until you know her name)...

Damn, Cap moves fast. I really loved the art on the final page as well. Plus, I'm glad that Cap is added to the list of Marvel heroes without a secret identity.

Doesn't this kind of thing become a trend for Cap..?
And like was said above...that was a bit forward.

2 stars for Cap always becoming a stage 5 clinger! I mean look how he tormented tense teen-ager Rick Jones!! And, poor Nick Fury had to change his phone number!!!

Smarts - Are we sure Cap took out Turk & Whitey? It looks like they shot each other!!

'Nuff Said - "Why not, Stark? Why keep a secret if there's no reason for it?"-Stone Cold Steve Rogers

Captain America commits a social faux pas while on a date!
Nick Fury uses the world's most elaborate telephone!
Steve Rogers gets fitted for a suit!

  Katryn Says:

What, was the phone line not secure? Was the restaurant full of spies? WHY HAVEN'T YOU INTRODUCED YOURSELF, GIRL??????? Is it that hard to go, "by the way, my name is..."?

  GroovyGolem Says:
  2016-06-05 06:33:49
When it comes to battle, Cap's got the moves... Just check out how he ducks the Turk and Whitey firing squad and gives them both a knuckleball to the crotch with his back turned!

When it comes to love? Not so much.

And the ridiculousness of Steve not knowing Agent Thirteen's real name at this point is stretched to the limit.

I found it a little weird to see Tony and Steve so chummy at the end. Have we ever actually seen them in the same room together before now? Remember, Cap has no idea Stark is really Iron Man. I thought it was kind of funny how Steve said, "you helped in the only way you could... With your money!" Ouch, Steve! Easy with the backhanded compliments!

But the backhand is Steve's style. Just ask Turk and Whitey!

  Russ Says:

Some food for thought on the proposal.....

I'm not really seeing an issue with him proposing so soon on a first date. My dad had proposed to my mother on their first date, and this was back in the early '50's (it took three more dates before she said yes). I think my grandparents on my mother's side were engaged by their second date. Of course, this is nowhere near common today, but it was probably a little more common, if not unusual, back in the '30's and '40's, the era Steve grew up in.

I do agree with all of you on not knowing her name by proposal time. Usually, most women get miffed at a guy for not knowing her name. Where's the chivalry?

And we've seen Cap turn the Scarlet Witch's head in the Avengers, so we know Steve's got game, too.

The start of this arc is waaaay overdue with it being hinted at in the Avengers for two issues running before starting here. Regardless, I'm curious to see where this goes. 3 stars, but if half stars were possible, I'd dock it half a star for her name not being revealed yet.

Her name is Thirteen. Her brother is a Doctor who works for Branch Ecch. Geeze, everyone overthinks this stuff.
