  Great cover.

  Post-Hypnotic Suggestion?
...
Yea, I'm not buying it.

Red Guardian's change of heart isn't particulary good idea. And making him long forgotten Black Widow's husband was unnecessary since nothing was really made of it except for short mix of contradicting thouths in Hawkeye's mind. But he had them without Red Guardian so maybe it's his natural state. But the development of Avengers as a group is well handed and I hope that we'll see more of Black Widow soon.

I don't like it when to much gizmo's come from out of nowhere just to be destroyed on the next panel, but one must agree that commies are much better characterized now than before.

this might be Colletta's best style so far, great fine lines & big blotches of black, a really good comic (4+)

Dynamic cover. The story is pretty predictable with cliches like the Guardian's change of heart leading him to protect Cap, the ex-husband angle, etc, but damn I enjoyed it.

Stan claims Hercules is a bit vague on twentieth century science. I think that's the pot calling the kettle black, no?

  TheAmazingGatorMan Says:

I had the same thought, Dumcanm. That aside, this was a really good story and builds the foundation for the Avengers to be affiliated with SHIELD.

Really fun issue, and a decent explanation of the Red Guardian's origin.

Seems like someone's greatest fear is the aliens from War of the Worlds on Page 4.

3 stars for the rise and fall of the Red Guardian!!

Phase II - I wonder if this super secret base was related to Yashonka from TOS #86? And, what ever happened to Dr. Yen??

Para-Sonic Thermo-Ray - Now, that's something you don't see everyday...

Star Search - Minus 1 star for the stupid tank with claws!

Rumble - Great fight scenes between the Red Guardian and Cap!!!

Jet Lag - Wouldn't a hospital in Japan be closer to China than Hawaii??

'Nuff Said - "No! Aim first for the females! They make the easiest targets!"-Sexist Soldier

It's too bad the Red Guardian died so soon. He was shaping up to be a real interesting character! There was plenty of room for more plot material out of his relationship with Black Widow.

  GroovyGolem Says:

This was a fun story arc. I assume the Red Guardian will be back in some form? Although his turn-around was cliché, it was appropriate, and I liked how he and Ling were at odds with each other over the nature of Cap's defeat.

I would have liked to see a little more of Herc, although I did like how he was ready to jump back in and save the bad guys at the end.

I found Colletta's inks to better than usual, but still uneven. For example, the half-splash of the tidal wave on Pg3 was fantastic, and the shading detail on Cap's body and costume on Pg6/P4 is good, but look at his head! That's terrible! Lots of bad head in this issue.

This issue took me forever to read. I'm thinking Colletta maybe did a sloppy job and a lot of the art had to be covered over with walls of extra text. Look at that second last panel!

It was a good issue, but I'm not sure why this one is considered 'essential.' The main villain dies at the end and it was only his second appearance.

Not as good as the previous ish, but still strong, and the revelation of some of Natasha's backstory was nice. 4 stars
