He grew up in Hell's Kitchen, and though the name "Yancy Street" resembles the real street "Delancey Street" which is found in the Bowery, both this issue and FF #15 associate Yancy Street with 10th Ave (Yancy either is 10th Ave or it crosses it). 10th Ave runs through Hell's Kitchen (among other neighborhoods) but is on the other side of the island from the Bowery, so the Yancy Street Gang is likely supposed to be based in Hell's Kitchen.
You will notice that Fury says that he fought against the Yancy Street Gang, so Ben Grimm would probably be ok with that ... except that Ben Grimm and Nick Fury are roughly the same age (before the sliding timescale tears them apart), so at the time Fury was fighting against the YSG, Ben Grimm may have been a member or its leader.

Steranko shows some cinematic influence in his art.

Dr Strange seemed like another filler/recap story that seem to come more often now.

And here I was worried about how the good doctor would find all of those people in time, but it looks like the bad guys did it for him.

Also can someone please explain to me why Gabe is blue? I've been wondering this for a while, but I guess I just thought Marvel had problems trying to ink a dark black man. But they have Black Panther without issue, so what's the deal here.

Apparently Gabe is an Atlantean. Or it's just a coloring mistake. But my gut tells me it's the former. It's the only thing that makes sense...

Cap vs Fury could have been epic, but was way too rushed and the plot was suspect. Strange was strange. 3 stars.

Nothing much happens with the Fury story, aside from the great art. The Strange story was a decent build up for next ish.

2 stars for the 1st app of Contessa Valentina Allegra De Fontaine, and to think that she shortened her name before joining SHIELD!!!

Splash - Amazing background!!! Did anyone spot SHIELD's slogan hidden in it?

Who's Your Daddy - The math doesn't add up if Nick's Dad was killed in 1918, and it still shows him as a kid in 1935!!!

UNIT - So SHIELD created the Human Fly before the Human Fly did!! Also, why the Atlantean gear? Planning on infiltrating Atlantis possibly??

'Nuff Said - "And don't call me lady again, either!"-Contessa

Strange Tales has really made its way into my top titles. For me, its up there with Thor, Amazing Spider-Man, and the Fantastic Four in overall enjoyment.

4 stars for Fury. I felt like I wasnt reading a 60s comic and there was so much development going on.

3 for Strange. The art and the sheer panic and concern is just wonderful. I felt like I was sharing in the poor docs stress.

Bit of a filler issue, but the art was snazzy. I also liked Contessa Valentina Allegra De Fontaine's first appearance. She's got the femme fatale look down, for sure!

Interesting that Fury tries to make the daughter of the Supreme Hydra an agent, and then just a few pages later laments that "the spy game ain't no place fer women!" Maybe he was just bitter at being turned down.

UNIT reminded me of the National Fatherhood Institute from the Simpsons, with its experiments in "Underwater Fathering."

Locust, you're always so good at spotting little details. I had to go back to the splash page to see the SHIELD slogan after you mentioned it!

Fury manages to go shirtless even in his flashbacks!
Speaking of which... A heat-activated explosive shirt must be one of the worst ideas ever conceived.

Steranko is really beginning to fire on all cylinders here. Even an otherwise filler story is a joy to read with his visuals. And the backgrounds on the first two pages were amazing; very cinema-like.

Too bad UNIT here wasn't the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce. That name hadn't been taken as of the publication date of this issue.

  dadoodoflow Says:

The opening of the Fury has a mood and tone unlike any other Marvel comic of the Silver Age at this point. You can almost hear Miles Davis' soundtrack to Louis Malle's "Elevator to the Gallows" playing in the background.

This should be an essential just for that shift in tone.

  JonahBlack Says:

Steranko's art blew me away. The panel layout and use of white space was really unusual for a comic of the times. It felt more like a late 80's book than a late 60's one.

The story was fun, but ultimately a little too much of a prelude/filler to get 5 stars.

It was also a little jarring that one one day he inducts Laura Brown into SHIELD, and on the next he tells the Contessa that "the spy game ain't no place for women".
