How the hell did the rest of the team get to the space station? By bus?

*sigh* Hate rays made of diamonds, the Mandarin trying to break Captain America's shield with karate chops, what is this 1963?

There were some undeniably silly aspects of this issue- hate rays, a giant sword over a city- but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. A global adventure starring all of the Avengers turned out to be great fun.

  A very enjoyable story.
My only gripe-Mandarin can't be too smart if, to beat the Avengers, he gathers villains they've defeated easily in the past (Both individually and in smaller Avengers teams).

A begrudgingly 3 star rating. So many problems, but it was fun having all of the Avengers in one issue.

I really liked this issue..... It felt like the first real big Avenger threat...... and I love how even Hercules was feeling a little caught up in all of making him wish he was an aAvenger too at the end.......

Absolutely awesome issue. It actually kind of reminds me of the Avengers movie where it pulls little bits of things from the different solo series. Ice giants and rock trolls, a cameo by Nick Fury, everyone who has been an Avenger up to this point (except for Hulk, but he's terrible with RSVPs). Even Ultimo out of nowhere! I also liked that it allowed Cap to show off his leadership skills, deciding who to team up and where to send them. That being said I would have been interested to see what happened if Wasp and Goliath got sent to Africa instead of Thor and Hawkeye. All in all, THIS is how you do and event comic.

My first thought was why did the Mandarin trust the Swordsman again after his betrayal? That didn't make any sense to me. That aside, this was a superb issue, definitely fills a giant desideratum of move as I've been reading. The manner in which the Avengers of new and old were brought together couldn't have been pulled off any more perfect. There was no sense of forcing anyone to fit in to the story and there was enough tie ins that made anyone who's read the order up to this point wet their pants in excitement. 5 stars, and this is the first time if have given an issue a higher grade if I was able to.

I've never been a big fan of the Avengers, but this issue was a blast. I liked how it was divided into "chapters" focusing on a different line up and villain, and everything just clicked in this issue. Great stuff.

This was pretty decent. I liked the leadership of Cap. I liked the hero teams fighting the villain teams. Loved seeing Thor go toe to toe with Ultimo. And of course I loved having Mandarin back again.

Epic story let down a little by some poor art. The splash page with our heroes beating on each other is a little embarrassing when you look at the kind of stuff going in in Fantastic Four and Strange Tales. Extra star for the cutaway of Avengers mansion.

5 stars for the Avengers competing in the Amazing Race!!!

Bevis & Butthead - Heh, heh...Warden Smith said penal...heh, heh...

Blades Of Glory - Funny, when the Living Laser called the others a bunch of losers, because he's a lone wolf!

No Prize - Fury is wearing Hercules headband! (p10,p6)

Executioner - I guess the Enchantress brought him back from the future (TTA #77), and stole his helmet and axe back from Odin (JIM #103)...

Citadel Of Science - I wonder if it is in Limbo?

Melting Pot - Odd, that when we see the Living Laser in Africa, there is not one black person in the crowd...

Backtrack - First, the Mandarin says he created Ultimo back in TOS #76. Now, he's saying he discovered it!!

'Nuff Said - "SHIELD's an American combo--not a blamed international police force!"-Nick Fury

Nice to see all the past and present Avengers (other than the Hulk) in one story, but the plot was a train wreck.

The art hurt my eyes. Just awful.

Thor vs Ultimo was awesome. Iron Man vs Giant Floating Exploding Sword was not awesome.

The chapter-like setup and cast of characters made it seem like it could be turned into a pretty decent video game of the Super Nintendo era!

They haven't had a annual this fun since since Fantastic Four Annual #1! I'll admit I was nervous thinking I'd have to read through 49 pages of Roy Thomas dialogue, but it ended up being a gun read!

So Tony Statk invented the taser gun? Who knew?

I like that Tony invented a light bending device for his car windows. I'm sure that comes in handy when you're putting the moves on models and starlets, Tony. You sly dog, you!

Nice fake-out by Mandarin with Namor. He had me fooled!

I love how the Avenger's mansion is "off limits" by the cops, like the U.N. and the Baxter Building!

I also love how Pietro finally admits his secret desire to go streaking (Pg11/P4). I always knew his unhealthy infatuation with his sister would manifest itself in other strange ways.

Some complained about the artwork, but I like Don Heck's somewhat old-fashioned, workman-like style. That panel of Power Man on Pg14/P4 is classic Heck.

I like how Tony was basically saying on Pg18/P6 "I should have known Hank would screw this up!"

And if I had to bet on Hercules vs. the Executioner? Come on... No contest. It's Herc every time! And speaking of the Executioner, how DID he get back from the future? Do we ever learn what was happening in that timeline, or does that remain one of those great, forgotten, untold stories? Regardless, I loved how Hercules just so casually launched the Executioner into the Frost Giant. Such a great Herc moment.

And yeah, what a great surprise to throw Ultimo into the mix, unannounced. @Locust75: I assumed Mandy was referring to how he probably salvaged Ultimo fromthe volcano after Iron Man beat him last time in ToS #78.

I thought it was also cool how we got a brief Don Blake appearance worked into the story.

And finally, just what the

And finally, just what the heck is Quicksilver doing to the Mandarin on Pg42/P5? Talk about your rear attacks! Yeeowch!

All in all, a great issue that paves the way for a much larger extended team!

My own suggestion for a 'Nuff Said: "You've done penal reform a great service!" -- Overly enthusiastic Warden Smith clearly anxious to go home to his wife.

Recommended listening for the story: "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears For Fears.

Other than that, this one-shot was great fun to read. Obviously this was intended as a showcase for just about every character who's been an Avenger (with the exception of the Hulk). I also like Roy's JSA/JLA approach of splitting into teams to tackle the menace. Roy hasn't been that great for Marvel so far, but he's on the cusp of a few storylines that'll make him a legend in the industry soon.

4 stars. Let's do it again sometime, gang.
