Woohoo, a Giant-Man/Ant-Man/Goliath vs The Human Top/The Whirlwind story... Not very pleasing. Best thing of the issue is Quicksilver's moral struggle.

As usual, the Ant-Man stuff was awful. But the Quicksilver stuff at the end was good.

This one was hard to get through. Takes me back to TtA during Pym's run.

"The awesome colors of Whirlwind"? Dude, you wear solid green.

Another change in Pym's powers. No wonder the poor man had mental issues later.

So is he Giant-Ant now??? Janet's rolling in it, and the number keeps going up...... first she was worth 3 mil now 5 mil....... and what really surprised me was Hank hasn't told her how to spend or not spend her money...... I would have expected her getting lectured about her blowing all her inheritance or something cause she's a 60s female that just can't stop shopping......

Quicksilver, buddy, careful man..... your starting to sound like your dad even though at this point I'm not sure if the writers even knew who your dad was........

Truly I cannot wait for the tale of Charles, the evil chauffeur. "Now that I have seen your rec room, I can take over the world!!!"
Ugh, it's even worse than I thought, he's the Human Top.
How the heck do you forget you put a cybernetic helmet in there Hank?! The first thing you guys talked about was how you were screwed because you didn't have one.
Have to admit to enjoying this tale though, kinda brings back memories of the very first Hank Pym story, when we started this crazy Marvel Reading Order thing.

+1 star for the Tolkien reference . Pretty good story with an old villain. Unfortunately he reminded me of Giant Man's last solo issue and it brought back bad memories and probably made another angel lose it's wings.

Nowhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be. Extra stars for Quicksilver's growing animosity to humankind, Pym's growing insecurity, Cap's growing unease with his secret identity - lots of foreshadowing, and a Tolkien reference on top.

2 stars for the breath of fresh air that is the Whirlwind! Come on, anything is better than his stupid outfits of the past!!!

Cover Me - The rest of the Avengers look pissed to even be in this issue!

Face Off - @j52y: I agree. Hank & Jan both know what the Human Top looks like! They seen his face when he wore that stupid puffy costume way back in TTA #69!!!

Pet Peeve - I'd still like to see Hank try to break in some fire ants!!!

Footloose - I'm with Pietro; I would've rather seen Whirlwind and him dust it up more!

'Nuff Said - "Correct, my flat-footed friend...but, rest assured...I am no mere nut!"-Whirlwind

I thought this one was going to suck, but it actually wasn't half bad! Changes are coming to Goliath (again), Quicksilver is scaring me with his hatred of humans, and the ant fight was pretty okay.

  GroovyGolem Says:

Okay, let me start by saying I just can't accept the Black Widow in white gloves, sun dress, scarf, and sun hat. I just can't. Having said that, thank you, John Buscema, for Pg2/P4. Gorgeous.

Such a strange start to the story, what with the Avengers all just lounging around in their groovy pad, hanging out in costume. Nope, nothing weird there. And Cap is a fan Tolkien?!? I don't see it.

And Whirlwind's new costume with those white boots and chest straps looks like he should be starring as a chorus dancer in "Shellhead: The Musical!"

Also, he might want to re-think those handles on the side of the helmet. One grab on those at full spin and it's bye-bye Human Top! At the very least he'll end up in a neck brace.

And why telephone the cops to say you're going to try to steal the payroll? Why not just steal the payroll?

Hank and Jan in the ant colony was actually pretty cool. One could imagine just how dangerous that could be... Like that one ant on Pg11/P2, with Hank's leg in his mandibles, or the one on Pg14/P2. One pinch of those mandibles and someone is losing a limb.

And how bad-@$$ of Jan to take out the queen? With a piece of wire no less!

I'm a bit "bugged" by Pietro's darkening mood. Of all the Avengers, he seemed to be the one with the most noble and heroic of attitudes. Curious to see where this goes, though.

And finally, I'm not sure I see how Hank is any different at the end. When he was first Giant-Man, didn't he also still have the little antennae on his head to still allow him to talk to ants? What's changed?

Nice to see some character development in this mag; the one title where you don't expect much of it, at least not on this scale this early.

I like Quicksilver's sub-plot, as I'm sensing it's on the cusp of a larger story arc, but one thing about it is bugging me. Pietro was warmly received way back in issue 16 when he joined, at a time when he was known only as a villain. Now he's done time in the Avengers, and have served the team well, and the public's turning on him? Come to think of it, I'd be a little PO'd too.

Natasha out of the spy biz? Yeah right.

I wonder if Jan's hiring for a new chauffeur.

Two months running, Cap's wondering about retiring. Why is this being mulled over in the Avengers? This subplot needs to be in his own series.

I thought this fight was better than most Giant-Man stories in Astonish way back when, even considering the villain. And not because Cap and Pietro joined in on the fun either. And I'll second @GroovyGolem and say that John Buscema sure draws some gorgeous ladies. 3 stars

1-star up from 1-star for the nostalgia of a not-that-good-AntMan/GiantMan/Wasp-Story and the subplot around Pietro...deep and dark foreshadowing me thinks

She starts off by letting the bad guy into the secret base, then forgets to pack her wasp stings... I think Dr. Doom is a more valuable member of the Avengers.

Whirlwind? Okay, it's an improvement over The Human Top. On the other hand, the costume is just stupid. "Hey, look kids, I have handles on my head!" However, Pietro's character development and Hank and Jan stuck in an ant colony without any superpowers actually worked. Three stars.
