The scene with cyclops diving through the door and shooting his beam at the door to slow it down is just silly looking

The typical misunderstandings are bothering. 'Wait I want to talk to you.' - 'No, I don't believe you for some nutty reason.' - BAM! Come on...

wow! What are the odds out of hundreds of places cyclops could've aimed he aimed at quicksilver.

I was struck by how resonant this storyline is with modern X-Men. Cyclops torn between Professor X's vision and the appeal of a mutant nation apart from humanity. Also Cyclops's penchant for shooting first and asking questions later if at all.

Great action issue! The best action scenes ever presented in the series so far! I just love how Cyclops is so powerful and awesome in this one. And when Quicksilver tries to persuade Cyclops to join Magneto was purely genius! This is the type of conflict that will be played over and over again for years to come.

A welocme relief after last issue. Story is back on track and moving into crossover.

I've always thought this was one of the cooler covers of the early X-Men, and the issue dosen't disappoint...... I agree with zweineuf..... no spoilers but those of you reading the order for the first time should really remember this one........

What's up with Quicksilver on the cover? He looks like a toothpaste tube somebody squeezed in the middle.
Hmm, Jean looks asleep...better leave her imprisoned.
Why does Pietro seem to think best way to convince someone to "just talk" is to pop up in front of them from out of nowhere, just a little while after attacking them?
An arrow? How mysterious! I wonder who could have put it there?!
Why does Cyk seem to be trying to shoot Pietro, instead of just sweeping his laser along by moving his head until he eventually hits him?
Man, that last panel showing the Avengers is weak. Really that's supposed to be "Earth's mightiest heroes"? When does everyone get back again?
They messed up and gave Iceman a face in the flashback, instead of the big ol' snowball he's supposed to have.
I wonder at which point the X-Men stopped using the same recruiting tactics as Magneto...

What I'm curious about is how Cyclops managed to blast off the lead shield when Toad specifically mentions disabling his hand triggers in the last ish...whoops, forgot about that one Stan.

A better than average issue at this point in the timeline. I like the exchange between Cyclops and Quicksilver about Magneto's mutant country.

Side story: Bobby, can't you see, I'm beating you up for your own good.

Extra star for Toad and Magneto's creepy S&M relationship.

Also, I love that Cyclops' plan for getting Iceman to join the team is to force him to break the law and then beat the hell out of him. Awesome leadership there, kid.

Magneto and a lack of Professor X definitely help the ratings.

2 stars for Cyclops and Quicksilver's witty banter! I know this is a important issue setting up Mutant ideology for the future. Even with Magneto's "No Country for Old Humans" bit. But, how Cyclops freed himself loses a star for me. He used his eye beams to force his visor down...??!!

Cover Me - As others have said; A very powerful cover!!

Jailbreak - It would of been better if Marvel Girl used her new telepathic power on the Toad making him release everyone. Because Magneto's gadget only worked on telekinesis, naturally...

Blame Game - Magneto punishes the Toad for letting Cyclops escape. Even though last issue he told Quicksilver it was his responsibility!

Signature Move - Of course, Magneto would have a MAGNA-screen...

Hulk Smash - Oh no! Quicksilver's got a giant hand!!! Also, later Quicksilver hits Cyclops so hard that his visor turns yellow!! (p14,p2)

'Nuff Said - "There will be no place for weaklings in the kingdom of Magneto!"-King Magneto

I've got to disagree with everyone. This mag is so bad still. What were they thinking with putting so much Toad in every issue? Does it get any better before it's cancelled for a bit?

Man, I loved this issue. Typical Silver Age problems aside, I thought it was bad-a$$ how Cyclops freed himself from his imprisonment through sheer force of will and maximum physical effort!

Normally I hate hate HATE when they use the term "Leader Man" in these comics, but in this issue Cyclops proved it. He's still just a teenager, but come on, that escape was awesome. He forces his visor open with his optic blast... how? CUZ REASONS! This is a defining moment in the young mutants life. With no one else to depend on (while Angel is off on his solo adventure) Scott has to rely on his own wits and guile to get out of this scrape, and he does it.

Plus, this shows how powerful those optic blasts can be. I don't know... maybe I'm biased. Sure, I know Scott's always been a bit of a stick-in-the-mud, but I've always liked him and how he carries the responsibilities of leadership on his shoulders, even at a young age. That's gotta count for something.

Also, I'm with Locust. Magneto tortures Toad for letting Cyclops escape when it was Quicksilver's responsibility to make sure everyone was secured. I think Maggie just likes having a whipping boy.

So what's up with Scarlet Witch? It's not like she was shot in the head. She just got grazed a little. Why the whole "injured mind" bit? Is she just walking around in a haze, unable to fully comprehend her surroundings?

I loved the fight between Cyke and Pietro, and the fact that Scott was about to succumb to Quicksilver's fast and furious blows before busting out a Hail Mary blast that takes him out. I would think that would be a bit like Nightcrawler bamfing and hitting from all sides in a matter of seconds. Ouch!

  2016-07-19 10:33:32
Next up... AVENGERS! Just think if Angel didn't decide to go investigate Red Raven's island, they would have arrived a lot sooner and saved everyone before any of this happened.

  Russ Says:

So this story arc is where the idea of a country for mutants comes from. It's kind of cool to see the seeds of the future of Marvel being planted in these stories.

Speaking of this arc, things are starting to pick up now, last issue's Stark Raven Mad diversion aside. But, why didn't Magneto take a few minutes and go get Angel after he escaped? Surely Buckethead is more than a match for a pair of wings, no? So now they have two escaped X-Men to deal with.

Oh, and editorial faux pas award to Stan for his spoiler comments. We didn't need to see Avengers #53 for how successful Angel was in getting help; all we had to do was turn to the last page! Funny.

And the fight between Cyclops and Quicksilver was excellent. Solo story ideas between the individual X-Men aren't a bad idea; it's just too bad the Angel's sucked last issue. However, I thought Scott used up most of his eye-beam power in that escape, but he seemed in fine form when he tackled Pietro. Also, I'm not a fan of dumb luck determining the outcome of fights. Both of them were pretty bada$$ here though.

3 stars. A lot of potential for a great conclusion to this arc in Avengers, and I like the clash of ideologies Magneto brings to each story. The X-Men are slowly getting better without the Professor.

This issue is emblematic of my x-perience (sorry) with X-Men thus far in the order. There's a lot to like in this issue, concept- and plot-wise, but it's outweighed by inconsistencies (how does Cyclops's power work? Does it cut, or melt, or is it force? How does he rest it if it's always on?), dialogue problems (Nobody tells Cyclops to stop!) and very uneven art (quicksilver is posed like Toad in a few places).

The end result is that I just don't *enjoy* reading it.

  on Cyclops power:

If it is force, it can also "cut" through things if used properly...
In this Issue it seems purely like force with opening the visor and such things....in earlier Issues it was more a heat-ray with all the melting and welding and such...
It will be interesting to see when they settle for either of these or something else entirely
