Those last couple panels with Colossus earned this one its fifth star.

Weird use of Rolling Stones lyrics. Love the final panel.

Ah, the Mutant Massacre. Walking down memory lane with this one... I remember when this came out, and it was probably one of the major moments in the X-verse, with the team not at full strength but taking on significant foes. Combine that with the concurrent storyline in X-Factor and you had the beginnings of all the crazy cross-overs that were soon to follow.

So many shocking moments in this one for readers at the time, especially the callous determination of the Marauders carving a swath of death through the Morlock tunnels, seeing Scalphunter effectively try to blow Kitty's brains out point-blank, seeing an invulnerable Peter take blades into the chest, and seeing an ANGRY Colossus actually snap someone's neck like a twig... Peter would NEVER have done that before the Marauders.

The ramifications of this issue would be felt for years, with things never being quite the same again for some of our favorite characters.

Also notice Wolverine's comment after almost being flattened by Cyclops' optic blast, where he says Cyclops, Angel, Beast... ALL of the original X-Men were in the tunnels. All of them including Jean. At that point, aside from Wolverine by virtue of scent, none of the current X-Men knew she was alive yet, and readers were aching for them to meet up and realize the truth.

This was a great time to be an X-Fan.

Interesting a couple issues back they were dancing that familiar dance of heroes who don't kill murderous villains out of principal.

I like this direction more. They don't have to be Punisher style vigilantes 24/7, but occasional lethal force would be unavoidable in such a universe.

This is the darkest X-men so far. Love it.

So grim. It was a little surprising when Captain America decided he had to shoot someone down to save lives; it wasn't THAT surprising when Wolverine was prepared to kill Rachel Summers to stop her from killing. Colossus, our stolid likeable everyman, snapping a neck? We're headed into dark territory.

The Marauders, however, are a little thinly drawn, and seem like a series of "pair mutant power with ethnic background" shuffles. It doesn't necessarily matter that they have no discernable motivation -- that conveys the sheer meaninglessness of the massacre, although it's all never-before-seen characters so far, besides Annalee? In conjunction with the slight hokey feel of this new super-team, however, Claremont's ethnic+power style, like a dark mirror of the new team in Giant-Sized X-Men 1, is a little too zany for an event so grim.

The change in tone is a little too abrupt, and the Marauders are a bit too dull to get to 5 stars, but it's good stuff.

Wow that last panel! I really hope we get to see a cold blooded killing machine Wolverine.

Wolverine's 3 claws cut through that pitchfork in 4 places. Must be another mutant power of his.

Storm's final instructions to Wolverine are bada** and Colossus reaching his breaking point was awesome as well.

Lots of people mentioning Colossus snapping, and I agree it was a great moment in this issue, but I would argue that we saw it before against Proteus.
