I feel like Lorna should have been introduced more than one issue before this one. Even if nothing were changed in this issue, it would have been better if there were just a bit more lead up. As it is, it just feels very out of left field.

It's nice to see Steranko bring his innovative layouts to The X-Men. However, on the whole, the art seems rushed and is definitely not on par with his work in Strange Tales and Fury.

An X-Men story that I actually enjoyed! What insanity is this?! The story felt a bit rushed, but a new (and hopefully lasting) supporting character and Sternako art could go a long way to improving this book.

Steranko is hit and miss for me. This was a miss. But I loved the campy Beast back-up!

Not since the Stan and Jack era of the series have I've been hooked throughout a X-Men issue! This was brilliance all the way! Jim Steranko's masterful, psychedelic art work makes every page come alive and explode! I stopped and marveled each panel for about 10 minutes, I savored the genius! And Arnold Drake's plot was mind-bending! Reminded me of a 1970's B-horror movie! This is obviously not the same series it used to be just a year before, the drastic improvements struck me unexpectedly! AND I CRAVE FOR MORE! Nuff said!

We never thought Magneto the second could be a woman! So sixties.

  Magneto is setting up franchises!

  Tarquinnff3 Says:

The dialogue seems really disjointed in this issue. Every time I turned the page I felt like I missed something. It was cool to see Polaris in action, but it wasn't very telling of her power. The Beast side story was pretty mediocre.

It's not the X-Men I grew up with, but getting better. Much better.

Fantastic cover, and a surprisingly good story. I can't believe I'm giving this four stars.

  Locust75 Says:

4 stars for the awakening of Lorna Dane!!!

Cover Me - Sweet image of Polaris in her classic costume!!!

Low Key - So, you put on masks before leaving, as to not attract attention. Even though, you came in wearing loud flamboyant costumes! Also, you're driving around in a missile car!!!

Wax Poetic - @Tarquinnff3: I agree about the dialogue. Everyone is talking like the Beast!!

Taking Names - Finally, the X-Men start kicking arse! No more worrying about their powers weakening, or getting beat by two-bit crooks!!!

Ice Pick - Iceman has ice boogers!! (p13,p2)

Domo Arigato - Hmmm...Magneto seems a bit off...

Beastie Boy - What a waste of an back-up story! X-Men #15 and last issue had already shown Beast's origin! Of course, who really wants to read about the Conquistador!!??

'Nuff Said - "That's one cookie jar I'm gonna like bustin' into!"-Angel...talking about the Demi-Men's Mansion, or Marvel Girl...

  Antifa Says:

finally a decent story and the art is bad. 2 stars, though the series is looking up

  UncannySteven @ Antifa (original post):

You're crazy. This is the best art this mag has seen so far, hands down. Steranko was so ahead of his time.

  UncannySteven Says:
  2015-08-17 02:41:48
The new logo is so awesome. Steranko was only on this mag for a few issues but that logo basically defined X-Men for decades. It's incredible.

  metsguy Says:
  2015-09-07 23:34:59
The "real" X-Men logo debuts and Drake and Steranko take us on a trippy ride. Was someone handing out acid in the Marvel offices?

  Katryn Says:
  2016-06-21 07:36:13
Bonus wardrobe feature on the MES is clearly working well for Lorna.

  Hoshizora Says:
  2016-08-03 12:23:52
Wow! The art suddenly took a turn for the fantastic! I just had to sit and marvel at some of these panels...

  GroovyGolem Says:
  2016-09-25 21:26:52
I like the direction Arnold Drake is taking things, but yowza what a rotten script! The dialogue was terrible! To wit:

Cyclops: It's almost a pleasure, dusting this demon skull with a pack of knuckles!
Bad Guy: Then see if my caress brings pleasure as well!

Huh wha?? First, that's an odd thing for Cyke to say in terms of phrasing, but the response is totally bizarre!

Also, for some reason Mesmero reminds me of the Cobra.

  Russ Says:
  2016-10-28 17:42:18
Easily the best issue of X-Men in the order, hands down. Jim Steranko puts his own unique stamp on the series with a great issue full of his groundbreaking art. He's only here for two issues, but he's left his mark on the series by designing and debuting the logo that will stand for more than 35 years!

And his art shines here just like it does in his work on SHIELD. John Tartaglione's inks give his visuals a different feel, but still retains the cinematic flow. The story itself gives you the feeling that the mutants in the Marvel Universe are starting to be a force that humanity (including the other non-mutant heroes) will have to reckon with sooner or later. The reveal of Lorna being Magneto's daughter seems a little contrived; it seems weird that she'd believe it so readily. Is Mesmero's hypnotism more powerful than we suspect?

4 stars. Our merry mutants are coming into their own. I knew there wasn't anything really wrong with the original team; they just needed to be written better. We're about to see some of their potential.

It has a great cover, even though it was marked down from 12 cents to 5 cents. What a bargain!

  BillG2330 Says:

The reveal at the end was weak.

  JonahBlack Says:

I've been skimming these X-Men books, but when I hit that 2 page splash at the beginning, I had to jump back and look at the title card. Steranko!

I do agree that it seems he spent all his time on that splash, and had to rush the rest. Still, there was a lot of the innovative layout work that puts his art head and shoulders above his contemporaries.

  Urgat Says:
  2017-10-25 09:31:24
Hmmmm I am like the commentators on this Issues, torn back and forth on the Steranko art...

Overall it is, as in the Nick Fury/SHIELD books good, great details and backgrounds, but in some panels I found very ugly details like Page 12 Panel 1, the face of Jean Grey. You can't tell that is well drawn and not ugly af, also it does not fit what Marvel Girl is saying and doing at that moment.

Another example the splash on page 14, again Jean Grey (bottom left)...the other characters on this splash have a lot more details, she just seems unfinished to.

I know, I know I am nit-picking here but these little details disturbed me somehow...
