Issue Review

First half is stronger than the second. We begin with an origin tale, as the Black Knight character gets a revamp and a new supernatural connection to his predecessor. It's all very by-the-numbers but the setting adds atmosphere and thus enjoyment. Plus it's cool to see what happened to the first BK. After that, the story takes a pedestrian turn as the villain forces an innocent man to attack our hero. So, we finish up with them battling in the skies over London. Uninspired. 4/10

I was bored by this issue from start to finish.

"getting a winged horse through customs wasn't easy". Even that little bit of fun weirdness can't save this horrible train wreck of a comic.

I was confused. Were they going for sword and sorcery, straight-up mystic hero, or superhero? They seemed to throw all three into the mix here.

So was that the same Merlin as from the X-Men? Because that guy was evil, too.

Maybe this was from before Merlin went nutso evil...

The only thing keeping me from rating this higher than a 3 star was the fact that Merlin was evil in a few other continuity stories. Otherwise, I thought this was a solid reintroduction of the Black Knight.

Not sure why this is marked as an "Essential", maybe because of some character introductions.

I really liked this bit of Marvel goofiness. Felt like a throwback to the golden age. Also, "The End...or the most macabre beginning of all??" No, it's the end.

It's good that this introduced the Ebony Blade.

Also, is the Ebony Dagger still out there in England, then? And it has never been claimed against the Black Knight since?

I enjoyed this story, the origin of Black Knight was pretty good; I was compelled to read and enjoyed it. The art has it's ups and downs....mostly up, though. (3+)

3 stars for the Black Knight getting all medieval on your arse!!!

Cover Me - I like the coloring. It gives a real creepy feel to it!!

A Tale Of Two Castles - Are there two Garrett Castles?? The Evil Black Knight had a castle in a small Balkan Kingdom located in the Alps (TTA #52). Then he had a castle outside of DC (TOS #73). It is now named Garrett Castle, and was moved over from Europe (A #47). Now in this issue, the Good Black Knight has inherited another Garrett Castle that is located in England!!!

Will The Real Merlin Please Stand Up - The Merlin seen here is the true Merlin. He appears a lot through the years, and looks different each time. Which adds to the confusion of him being the real Merlin, or not! The Merlin you are all thinking of is an imposter. He fought Thor (JIM #96) & the X-Men twice (XM #30, 47).

Nemesis - I wished they would of used Le Sabre and his gargoyle mount more often. The Black Knight sure could've used more rogues to fight with through the years!!!

Splash - Nice image of them fighting over London!!!

Rubbish - @MattzLadd: As far as I know, it's still just hanging around in London.

'Nuff Said - "That hoof...struck my hand, as if by design!"-Le Sabre

i don't understand why you need an origin issue for a character that already had an origin.

Is it "Modred" or "Mordred?" The issue I read spells it as the former.

Don't get the hate for this. It was admittedly preposterous (but hey comics) but I enjoyed the art and the gothic tone.

English accents in Marvel always get an extra star.

We're in England, so everyone must say guv. Otherwise, how would you know it's England? Everyone might forget after 5 pages! And we better remind people that Dane is American. He doesn't say guv so he can't be English, but just in case.

Ugh, this was terrible! I would have enjoyed the art more if it weren't for the eleventy-hundred word balloons covering it all up in every panel! You'd think with all that dialogue we'd get a comprehensible story, but no... Roy is back to his old tricks.

And why reboot the origin of the Black Knight when they JUST rebooted it? This is worse than Sony's Spider-Man!

Bloody awful, Guvnor!

I thought the story was a bit of a disappointment, but not that horrible. I think it's still better than most of the Torch stories from Strange Tales, or most of the Gi-Ant-Man run from Tales to Astonish.

The one thing I noted from the story was that it seemed like the spirits of Percy and Mordred were pulling all the strings, and the other characters were simply along for the ride. And speaking of Mordred, I thought Richarde was already pretty messed up before the sorcerer made contact with the discredited performer. "The only way to find peace from the death of your partner, is to kill this stranger!" Well, good luck with that!

And as for Dane, I think he's already a strong enough character without the spirit of Percy looking over his shoulder. I get the connection between the two, and the Ebony Blade as well, but anything with Percy involved seems to make Dane as nothing more than Percy's catspaw, and Dane deserves much better.

2 stars. We're gonna party like it's 1099!

Every story I read about the Silver Age creators Hal Foster's Prince Valient is always mentioned as an inspiration. Tales of Asgard was created as an homage. I wish that I had gone full Prince Valient on this, it might of saved it.

I read the Atlas era Black Knight stories earlier this year and really enjoyed those. having read those made me appreciate this more. Only the last half with Mordred made it four stars instead of five.
