Is it me or do they change Cyclopes powers while he is Erik the red?

Wow this was a disappointing arc. I feel like it could have been really great if they had taken a little more time with it. That's how I feel about most of the early X-Men run actually...just a long string of squandered opportunities...

I grow weary of these insipid origin featurettes. Tales of Asgard they ain't.

I love how they completely dropped the whole "calling forth all latent mutants" plot they started with.

  Bad ending

I have to admit that the story here kind of flops toward the end (all endings are bad, right?) The Erik the red disguise was a little confusing and a waste of time (that's the guy on the last issue's cover! right?) Cyclops changing his power was not explained either and everything was rushed leaving behind a huge load of plotholes like...whatever happened to the awesome art work of Jim Steranko!!? Know what I mean? But I went mad with the action here and Jean really showed her stuff when she went head-to-head with Mesmero! Like I said; great battle issue!

Polaris ends up where she belongs. Cyclops gets to have a little fun as Erik the Red, not as morose as he usually is. The first X-Men arc i've enjoyed in a while.

Two in a row. I'm finally starting to enjoy the X-Men. It's about time.

What the crap kind of plot/story did I read? Who came up with this, Roger Rabbit? Helen Keller? Atrocious.

Very limp ending, but still enjoyable. The origin stories at the end have been consistently garbage.

Lorna doesn't seem to be displaying magnetic powers similar to Magneto here, though I'm sure she stated this issue or last that she shared the same ability.

  SmokyB Says:
  2015-03-05 11:14:28
The book has the feel of something that was lagging on a deadline. Very rushed plotting (how does Cyclops get to shoot beams from his hands?) and loose ends from the previous issues hastily tied up (what are Polaris' powers anyway?). Story conference must have taken about two minutes. Badly missed Steranko's layouts as well.

I would like to know who Cyke shot those beams out of his fingers. Still the best X-Men story in a long time!

2 stars for the Demi-Men becoming undignified!!!

Erik The Red - It is later explained that the suit Cyclops is wearing transfers the power from his eyes to his hands...yeah, that's the ticket!

Gunslingers - Ya know, for a bunch of mutants, the Demi-Men sure like to use ray guns instead of their powers...

Blinded Me With Science - Mesmero thinks mutant powers are supernatural...

No Prize - I guess, Mesmero hypnotized everyone into thinking he can shoot mental blasts!!??

'Nuff Said - "Now how about some more muscular therapy...at the friskoteque?!"-Frisky Lorna (My momma always told me to watch out for girls with green hair!)

I *hated* these last few issues. I have come to the conclusion that Arnold Drake was either the most sophisticated artificially intelligent neural network at the time, or he did not learn English as his primary language. Something about... The way he... Puts together... Phrases and... Mixes metaphors!

Regardless, I can't stand his scripting.

As for the art, Heck and Roth gave it the ol' Steranko try. The style didn't look like either of theirs. I almost wonder if Steranko did a very rough draft on the initial layouts first.

Loved the cover though! Let's get Marie Severin and Joe Sinnott to do the inside too!

Did I mention how bad the scripting was?

I just don't know what to think about the ending. The reveals of Erik the Red and Polaris.....they just made it seem contrived and forced, as if the story ending was picked out of a hat-full of other plot devices. Still, I have to give the ever-changing creative teams some credit for this story arc. It's still the best arc this mag has seen up to this point.

Cyclops had fun being a different guy. Did he have a ruby quartz apparatus in his suit that channeled his optic blasts out of his fingers, or were they created out of machinery? Hmmmmm

Plot holes and odd story devices aside, I still think we saw the possibilities and the future of the mutant storyline for Marvel in these pages. We didn't see enough of the powers of the individual demi-men, other than that negative energy guy earlier in the arc. A wasted opportunity here. Still, I prefer this arc over "Metoxo and the Lava Men" as teased at the end of issue #48.

Finally, speaking of potential, we're finally getting to see just what the X-Men can do without that busybody Professor gumming up the works.

3 stars. One plot hole I haven't seen addressed yet: Fred Duncan. The X-Men are back together again; does this mean the FBI will soon get involved?

While I agree that this story arc could've been executed a lot better, I prefer the Polaris stories over "Metoxo and the Lava Men" as promised at the end of issue #48. If I were to speculate, I'd say they committed to the new story arc late in the game and probably had to cobble the stories together pretty fast and under threat of deadlines. Much of it did seem rushed and contrived.

I don't like the plot twist about Lorna (why do you all keep calling her Polaris when no one during the entire arc was calling her that... *noobish remark ends here*) ...it just came so much out of nowhere.

I liked the plot involving Erik the Cyclops, I knew something was not quite right with the red guy but I could not imagine it was Cyclops all along because...yeah...fingerbeams and not eyebeams...

The action sequences in this Issue where like last Issue very good and give hope for this mag and a glance of what the X-Men can do when "used" correctly
