  VENOM! 5+ stars, no doubt!

This is a great story. I took off a star for the webbing that is all over the place. The actual look of the webs is nice, but the patterns make no sense.

I loved this issue when it first came out and I still love it today. It's been awhile since an iconic character has made a first appearance in the order, and Venom does so with style! Great first introduction! (I know he was in a couple previous issues, but no one even knew he existed, so they don't count in my mind).
It is unfortunate that Brock didn't actually appear years earlier in the series though.
One thing I find noticeable about this one over the last two is the art. I'm not sure if McFarlane picked up his game for this comic, or if the inking and colouring has improved that much, but Spider-Man is looking back on top again.

-This is a good issue--not a great issue storywise. I think that like Secret Wars #8, people tend to overrate it based on influences of other, better stories that came later, because "This is the one that started it all." Maybe?
-I agree with Nucky, TM was really hitting stride with his slightly-stylized Spidey.

McFarlane's art is pretty rough in places. For every "cool"-looking pose or splash page, there's a very strange-looking face, anatomical monstrosity, and a weird cartoony quality that sticks out in odd places. Furthermore, Michelinie and McFarlane seem to be conspiring to flatten Mary Jane into a bland, one-dimensional sexpot, which doesn't sit well with me.

As someone who has never read anything beyond whatever point in the timeline I'm reading, I personally think this is a 5-star issue either way. As you said, the artwork is excellent. The grin on Venom is creepy as hell. And the concept just as a stand-alone thing (Spidey's suit coming back to get him) is one of the more unique and interesting things to happen in Spidey in quite some time.
The only reasons I would consider 4-stars is the cobbled-together back story of Brock (it acts like we should know him, when we don't), and the fairly weak climax, but I tend to rate comics on my enjoyment of them rather than analysis, and I was smiling throughout most of that one :)

I can't give this more than 3 stars. The plot is just ok, and the art is incredibly inconsistent. McFarlane's action scenes are not only great, but fresh and interesting. Everything else he draws seems rubbish. I hope he improves over time.

There is a lot to like here, but imo this story doesn't stand the test of time as much as i would like it to.

  Holy overly-elaborate deathtrap, Batman!
