Issue Review

RikerDonegal
   November 14, 2016
A story-driven chapter with an action-packed second half, as the Hulk battles the Thing.
Motivations. Our heroís reasons for doing various things are a bit vague in this one. He attacks a train early on, without much cause, and later seeks out and engages the Fantastic Four, without much reason to do that either.
Action. The battles with the FF and the Thing are brief and unremarkable.
Story. Stories like this have a built-in flaw, because the reader knows that a cure wonít actually work. Or else the series will end forever. However, itís certainly an interesting way to get the Hulk onto a train and back to New York city. And it allows us the enjoyable short scene of the Hulk throwing two would-be thieves off the moving train.
Contrived. The two weakest elements of the story are probably the pouch Banner ties around his waste and the character of Andrews. Bannerís pouch contains his notes on a cure and it stretches credulity later on when Sue Storm notices it and is able to deduce itís importance. Meanwhile, the writer goes to extreme lengths to swap out one of the guards at the Baxter Building to allow the story to have a Ďreasoní for Banner to get harassed and turn into the creature. Again, it just seems overly-convoluted.

7/10

I'm not keen on the way Bruce Banner has been drawn in the last few strips. His face is almost indistinguishable from the Hulk's at times!

Trimpe art not perfect, but its still Trimpe; the story is pretty good(3)

Yes, Hulk is strnger, but Thing gets to add his brains to the fight which is why they are usually too close to call.

Nice buildup to Hulk's fight with the FF. I think the panels with Thunderbolt Ross were not needed. I would have liked to see more action with the actual fight.

Sue looks really off on page 17. A Thing/Hulk fight is always welcome, even if this one was pretty short.

3 stars for Hulk and Thing battle of the catchphrases!!!

Cover Me - Nice image of Hulk and Thing tearin' up the Baxter!!!

Human Error - As soon as I saw the guards, I knew what was going to happen. Reed should've just hired a guy with a stick to poke Banner with as soon as he entered the Baxter!!

Caboose - Dammit Banner, everyone knows that Hobo's luv their pouches!!!

Over The Top - Great image of the Hulk & Thing arm wrestling!!!

'Nuff Said - "Why, then, does this pouch fascinate me so..."-Sinful Sue

I was expecting more from this than an arm wrestling match between the Thing and the Hulk. Well, I wasn't from a Hulk story. But I would have from an FF story.

It's always a fun time when the Hulk and the Thing square off. Sure, this one was short, but only because there's a bigger story here.

One thing about riding trains, pretty soon hoboes are going to be leaving strangers alone. Nobody wants to pull a knife on the Hulk. Or one would think.

3 stars. Think we have a good arc brewing here, along with Reed's and Bruce's formulas.

Banner goes all Memento and starts writing notes to his future self. If he tattoos himself, does it remain when he turns into the Hulk?

Reed Richards: Has enough free time to try to cure the Hulk, who he hasn't even seen in like 600 issues, but still hasn't gotten around to naming his son.

  A cure for the Hulk?

Will it work? Will we lose our magnificent green beast?

Why can't "Thuderbolt" give love a chance?

The writing was really good in this issue but for some reason, Trimpe's art was awful. Not just Banner but Sue looked like she stepped out of a Picasso. I did love the Thing looking in from the elevator shaft upside-down.

Three Stars.

Sure Reed. A cure for the Hulk, but what happened to that cure for the Thing?
