Hard to believe this is the last original X-Men story for over a thousand issues of The Order.

  Kez Says:
  2011-10-30 22:18:05
It's a shame it ended here, really. It just started to get pretty good.

Ah, well. At least I know this isn't the last the world hears of the "X-Men"... not by a long way!

  Calthor Says:
  2012-07-30 03:23:53
It is strange that they were cancelled when they had just started to become so good. A dozen issues before this, I would not be surprised at all, but by this point, they had reinvented themselves...

  chrys Says:
  2013-05-15 01:59:19
Whoa, Bobby, you can't take a hint, huh? Or even a direct, repeated no...

At The Gates of Dawn Says:
  2013-08-19 02:20:40
And the original X-Men series comes to an end with this issue! And it ends with a bang! Or a "Hulk Smash!" I think the story here was a little weak than usual which is surprising because Roy overcame mediocre scripts years ago! I'm not saying this issue was bad, it just felt like a let down compared to previous issues! Bobby becoming extremely jealous of Havok was really annoying! The battle with the Hulk was interesting under Sal Buscema's art. The X-Men were finally hitting their stride here but too little too late I guess!

  leisch Says:

As Professor X comes out of his coma, the magazine goes into it's own coma.

Bummer the title gets canceled just as it was getting interesting, even if this issue was a little underwhelming. I'll be interested to see how they and if the X-Men pop up in the Marvel Universe until Giant-Size #1. I know Beast turns blue and joins the Avengers but I don't know much about what everyone else was up to during the gap...

  Tarquinnff3 Says:
  2014-09-28 12:29:03
*sad face* It's over for a while. At least it ended decently, if not slightly cheesy. Here's to hoping for entertaining guest appearances until the series returns.

  TheAmazingGatorMan Says:
  2014-10-31 19:22:45
Wait, what? This is the last title for awhile? Crap!

  specialque Says:
  2014-12-18 12:39:15
This was a pretty weak issue, and even though the X-Men started getting good in the last dozen issues or so, I'm not surprised they went into reprint mode. After years of being the worst comic at Marvel, I'm sure they built up enough of a reputation to keep readers away. I'm not going to pretend that I'm disappointed by the break in X-Men stories. It'll make me that much happier when they come back as a different team and a much better comic series.

  MattzLadd Says:

Good ending to an eventually good series. Looking forward to Giant-Size X-Men now!

3 stars for Viva Las Mutants!!!

Juvenile - I agree with others about Iceman being an ass! Cyclops should've pulled rank and made him go with them!!

Lingo - I never heard the phrase about knowing your oatmeal cookies!??

Strategy - Also, it should of been Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Iceman, Havok, and Polaris that went. Angel and Beast should of stayed with Pro. X! It's not like they're off to fight Locust...

Concealed - Is this the first and last time to ever see the hanger/cottage???

Albatross - I like the Narrator's note that Angel didn't fly all the way to Vegas. Even though a couple issues ago he was flying all over the world like it was nothing...

Surgical Strike - I wish Cyclops would have blasted Talbot!!!

The More You Know - I had to look up Justice Douglas, and I still didn't get the reference!

Chicken - Beast's trunks turned yellow after fighting the Hulk!!! (p20,p4)

'Nuff Said - "Get back, Scott! I--what are you staring at so wild-eyed?"-Oblivious Marvel Girl

I'm glad it was Xavier saying he'd be back on his feet in no time. If it was anyone else, that'd be a low blow. But no pressure Professor, you've got 5 years, take your time.

  Russ Says:
  2016-12-17 06:26:39
Whatever happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. And so the series stays over the next five years as the Merry Mutants take a respite after soldiering through a highly schizophrenic series. We readers are so mentally exhausted from the ups and downs here, they should use that gamma gizmo on us, too.

And that idiotic Iceman....sure, Lorna thought Alex was attractive a few issues ago, but it was his actions that probably drove her to him more than anything else. Hope you're taking notes, Bobby: women aren't possessions, in spite of how Stan's portrayed them!

So with that out of the way, the final analysis of the original X-Men......

Maybe overall, this series just a little too far ahead of its time. The concept of mutants fighting for a suspicious and paranoid humanity was, and is, a great concept. I wonder how it was so difficult for writers to keep a consistent level of quality going. The stories here were either great, such as with Steranko's very brief run, or the Thomas-Adams issues, or horrible; there was almost no happy medium.

The concept of mutants learning their powers in a school wasn't a bad one, but it was prone to becoming very redundant very quickly because the students have to graduate sometime. This either rendered the professor superfluous, or necessitated bringing an entire new class in. The series stalled out because, editorially, Marvel wasn't ready to do either. Hence, my comments from issue #65.

  Russ Says:
  2016-12-17 06:31:05
Final grade: D+. We'll see the X-Men in guest appearances for awhile, and a solo X-Man series where things get pretty, uhmmm, hairy for one of the team. Chris Claremont stories await us after about five years.

The original team wasn't bad; in retrospect, it's pretty clear that nobody really knew what to do with them or how to write them.

  skabeaters Says:

I don't understand how this was cancelled during a time when Silver Surfer, The Submariner and Nick Fury's titles were still running.

  benmason486 Says:
  2017-06-13 11:25:18
So, Professor X didn't die. Shocker.

I agree that Bobby's jealousy issues are becoming really annoying. Also, he isn't helping his suit with her. Guys, repeat after me: jealousy is not an attractive trait in a boyfriend. Girls, repeat after me: jealousy is not an attractive trait in a girlfriend. It works for both sides.

  Allencthulhu Says:

So, we come to the end of the original X-Men run. Overall grade: C. There were good issues, a couple great issues and a lot of mediocre and bad issues.

See you in Giant Size X-Men #1 in about...five years.
