Issue Review
   March 19, 2014
I have no idea what in the world was up with this issue of garbage. But certainly, we have entered the time of comic book writing when more than a few people have begun to phone it in over time. Really? The Kangaroo? A guy that studies what kangaroos eat - and then trains like them to become a villain - but only after stowing aboard a ship - from Australia - and ending up in New York City?

Wow. This one's a pile of garbage. Get back into some better villains. Get some real writing. And please, please, please... Write some stories that extend beyond the one issue. Pass on this junk.

From the title and cover, I thought this was going to be another ridiculous Leap Frog type story. It's really a decent issue, although The Kangaroo is really a pretty silly villain. And would the police actually have shot the poor sap in the back if they hadn't been in a crowd?

  rubixcube60 Says:
  2012-11-02 15:54:54
*sigh* What is it with Stan and jumping? The leaping villain schtick didn't work with Toad, it didn't work the with Batroc, it certainly didn't work with Leapfrog. And wouldja know it, it didn't work here either.

  Drax Says:

The no continuous-storylines policy is really delivering some subpar comics. Most of the early 1970 comics have this feeling of being rushed to fit in only one issue. I sure hope they come back with good storylines soon.

  podgejeff Says:

Couldn't agree more Drax. This run of the comics just feels like reading filler issue after filler issue. They don't have enough room in one comic to work out self-contained plot while moving the overall story forward.

While Kangaroo's power sucks (he just kind of learns to be superhuman, really?) I did like his characterization for some reason. At this point in Marvel's history it's nice to see some villains who weren't out to conquer the world.

And yeah, in that opening scene at the angle Spidey was shooting his web his next swing would have hit a car or something.

Any story where Aunt May appears in more than about 4 panels seems to result in a sub-par story.

They're really going to let Peter prank Aunt May so she thinks she's senile?

  skalchemist Says:

I'm sorry, but Aunt May is just creepy, obsessive, controlling, and has always been drawn to look like a mummy. There, I've said it, and I don't regret it.

She seriously starting to remind me of Momma from The Waterboy. "Stay away from that Spider-Man! He's the Devil!"

  1) horrible idea for a villain.

2) I thought webbing dissolved after an hour or so. You can't tell me that Spider-Man beat the Kangaroo and got the vial back in an hour or so...

I LOL at Aunt May fainting. Its been nice with her gone.

The Kangaroo's powers are dumb, but I like the character.

Just 1 star for the Kangaroo! I think this is the first Spidey issue that I've gave one star...

Cover Me - I do like where Romita signed his name!

Cubans - At least J Jonah is always good for a laugh!

No Country For Lame Villains - Could the Kangaroo be a mutant? If only he would have followed in the way of the Koala!!!

Varicose Veins - I know Aunt May is frail and all, but look at her legs on p15,p2!!

'Nuff Said - "I'll squeeze it even tighter--with my fingers!"-Sinful Spidey

I read where either Romita or Buscema had to come up with the Kangaroo because Stan Lee absolutely wanted an Australian villain for some reason. What else could they do? Check out the book "Comic Creators on Spider-Man" Anybody whose worked on Spidey books is in there.

Oh Aunt May, Peter was starting to look almost well-adjusted, so suddenly you're back from your holiday and almost dying again. Well played, you old schemer. Well played.

So page 12 panel 4, the Kangaroo's wrist wrap is missing, which made me realize he'd been wearing the same wraps since he ran from his fight down under. And he stowed away on a ship all the way to the east coast without changing them, that's got to be over a month long voyage. Seriously, try wearing white gloves around the house all day for a couple of days, I guarantee you get some stains on them. Now imagine wearing them while skulking about a dirty container ship for over a month, they would be brown or grey at best. Is his real power the ability to keep cloth white under any circumstances?

  Russ Says:

G'day mates! Time to toss another shrimp on the barby, crank up some AC/DC (or any other Aussie band of your choice) and read about me mate, the Kangaroo!

Actually, this one doesn't have much going for it. The Kangaroo just isn't a memorable villain, and he's about as dumb as a box of rocks. What's worse is that he was deliberately portrayed that way. His origin wasn't that outstanding either, although it's at least plausible. At least he wasn't bitten by a radioactive kangaroo. Because, what if he grew a pouch? Uhmm, eww.

At least the scene with Aunt May finding the web dummy, I thought that was kind of funny, even if it did give Stan an excuse to make her seem near death's door for the 194th time. But how did that web dummy last all night in bed when the webbing dissolves in an hour? On second thought, I don't want to know.

2 stars. Can't remember the last time I rated a Spidey story so low. But I guess the no-continuation policy has thrown everyone off their game.

Aunt May returns and all fans moan in agony. I actually like Aunt May. More than any other character, she grounds Peter in this world. Of course, I'm not a huge fan of the melodrama in her character. Peter say: "I'm flushed because I rushed to get here in time. I'm not sick. New York traffic and subways just suck." Nothing nefarious. Just normal people being late and running.

  JonahBlack Says:
  2017-10-01 22:34:55
I liked the tacit acknowledgement that Kangaroo wasn't a threat to Peter, but that he had an alternate victory condition in the form of the vial. The montage of Kangaroo's backstory had me in stitches.

I really want an issue where Batroc comes and gives this guy a beating for stealing his shtick.

  Allencthulhu Says:

Why did I give this three stars? Because I'm going to hell because of it.

The minute I read Peter putting the dummy into the bed I said, "That's not going to work! She's gonna come in there, try to take his temperature and get stuck in the webbing." So when the deal went down, I laughed out loud--loudly.

The villain was ridiculous but the threat was credible. Bouncy Croc Fighter would have been a better name for him.

I would have given this one star but, as I said,

Three Stars because I'm on the Highway to Hell...

  Marksman Says:
  2017-12-31 21:40:45
Why didn't Spidey just web the Kangaroo up instead of trying to go hand to hand with him and risk breaking the vial?
