ISSUE SYNOPSIS

Doctor Doom, shown in his hideout, proclaims he alone possesses the power to defeat the Fantastic Four. He then storms away and boards a helicopter, presumably on a mission to prove his boasts are true.

Meanwhile, the FF are relaxing in their headquarters atop The Baxter Building. Johnny, while reading a comic, shoots a barb at Ben, comparing his appearance to that of The Hulk. This offends Ben and a squabble ensues, forcing Sue and Reed to intervene and stop them. Reed begins to lecture the pair as the lights are cut. Outside, Doom, in a helicopter, drops a massive asbestos net over the building, and again proclaims his superiority to the team.

Reed recognizes the assailant’s voice and proceeds to tell the story of Victor Von Doom, a student he knew while attending college. Von Doom was a brilliant scientist with a penchant for the occult, often conducting “forbidden” experiments. His research continued until he eventually unleashed uncontrollable powers which horribly disfigured him and led to his expulsion from campus.

Outside, Doom announces that the FF are his prisoners and demands that Sue be held as a personal insurance plan for the team’s obedience. Sue climbs to the top of the building and offers herself as a hostage. Doom brings her aboard his helicopter and demands that rest come aboard peaceably. The trio complies and the team is transported to Doom’s castle fortress.

Once inside the stronghold, Doom informs them that he has perfected a time machine and demands that they travel to the past and find the treasure of the legendary pirate Blackbeard, in exchange for reward. Reed convinces the others to take Doom at his word and they agree to accept the mission.

The team fades from view and reappears in what appears to be a 17th century colonial setting. They are forced to scramble for period clothing before their presence is discovered, Ben donning a large black beard to hide his rocky appearance. The trio are then drugged and thrown in the hold of a pirate ship. Upon awakening, a furious Thing smashes his way from below decks, allowing the team to use their powers and subdue the crew. Suddenly, the ship is fired upon by another vessel and a battle ensues. The Torch uses his flame to shroud the ship in steam, while Mr. Fantastic and The Thing lead a charge to board the attacking craft. The fight is quickly over and Ben is anointed “Blackbeard” by the victorious pirate crew. Reed splits the treasure among the sailors and hatches a plan to bring only “the chest” of Blackbeard back to Doom. Ben proclaims his intention to remain in the past as a “somebody” and orders Reed and Johnny off the ship on a life boat. A freak sea tornado then destroys the pirate vessel and maroons the trio, treasure chest in tow, on an island. Ben laments his rash behavior just as Doom returns the group to the present.

Back in his castle, Doom informs the FF he was actually after the gems of Merlin, which give their owner the power of invincibility. Upon opening the chest, Doom discovers the bogus treasure, and lashes out at Ben, who strikes back, smashing Doom to bits, and it’s revealed he was actually a robot. The “real” Doom then attempts to suffocate the team from a room above. Sue is able to use her powers to invisibly get away and save the others. The team then escapes from confinement and The Torch attempts “smoke” Doom from his castle, using rings of flame. The limit of The Johnny’s power is reached and Doom is able to escape at story end via jetpack, vowing future conquests.

ISSUE'S LETTERS
DEAR EDITOR:

…FF #3 was excellent! The feud angle made it all the better though, particularly the ending. The continuity in FF is all that could possibly be asked. I’ve just subscribed to FF for two years – I hope it runs much much longer than that.

Roy Thomas
Sullivan, MO

So do we, Roy, so do we!

DEAR EDITOR:

…Bill Sarill states that the Thing ought to revert to human form at will. Why? The Thing’s inability to look human is unique and without it the FF would be just a league of super-heroes. Instead of the name “Mr. Fantastic” how about “Mr. Elastic”?

Mike Randall
Atchison, Kansas

Thanks, Mike. Now let’s get some more opinions.

DEAR EDITOR:

…Why does everybody know who their human identities are? Shouldn’t they be kept secret?

Rick McGuire
Parsons, Kansas

Maybe so, Rick, but how do you keep a flaming teenager, a four-story skyscraper hideout with a built-in rocket launcher, etc. a secret? Besides, remember us saying in an earlier issue that we wanted our stories to be different, and perhaps a bit more logical?

DEAR EDITOR:

The FF is fantastic, wonderful and amazing! But how about more action with Invisible Girl?

Scotty Smith
Anchorage, Alaska

How do you MEAN that, bub? Anyhow, we’ll have a talk with Sue and tell her to ham it up a bit more, okay? That is, if we can FIND her!

DEAR EDITOR:

I have just read “The Menace of the Miracle Man” and it was terrific. But, when I turned to your letters page, I was sorrow stricken. This insult was entirely uncalled for. The only reason fans write is because they feel they have become personal friends with the editors. I will continue to read your mag, but I won’t enjoy it as much as previously.

William J. Marcolongo
Philadelphia, PA

Aw, Bill, don’t be mad! The only reason we mention that we can’t answer letters personally is so that you WON’T be offended if you receive no letter. Surely you can understand that we don’t have time to answer dozens of letters daily and still edit magazines! Of course, we could always have some office boy answer them and sign our name, but we don’t believe in kidding the reader. Dig?

DEAR EDITOR:

While the third issue of FF was the best yet, I think your covers are too crowded. Also, I’d like to read longer letters on the Fan Pg. And keep your sense of humor bottled up, too. And please, no more monsters. Now here’s what I do like: The new costumes, the skyscraper hideout, the Fantasticar. Also, the rivalry between characters is excellent, as is the fact that no member has a secret identity. The Human Torch is your strongest character – so original. And I’d like a new name for Mr. Fantastic.

Roger Mann
Minneapolis, Minn.

No comment yet, pal. We’re still trying to decide if you’re for us or agin’ us!

DEAR EDITOR:

How about having a 25¢ comic of the FF? It’s great!

Harold McIntosh
Marblehead, Mass.

Can’t do it yet, Hal, but tell you what – if you wanna pay 25¢ for the mag now, be our guest. The dealers will love you!

DEAR EDITOR:

Why has the thing four fingers instead of five? It’s a terrific mag and gets better each issue. My friends and I have a FF Fan Club.

Cruz Jiminez
Ft. Riley, Kansas

Lots of readers have asked about the Thing’s fingers. What bugs US is: if you don’t question a man becoming a monster, a boy turning into flame, a human body stretching at will, then WHY does everyone object to one itsy-bitsy missing finger? Anyway, by way of explanation, we’ll take the easy way out and blame it on the cosmic rays! And, good luck with your club, Cruz. Where do we apply?

DEAR EDITOR:

…The FF is interesting and different than any other comic mag. But I’d like to request that the thing be able to become human at will.

William Frazier
Mt. Sterling, KY

YOU’D like to request it? What do you think the THING would like? Well, mebbe some day…

DEAR EDITOR:

You boast on your cover “The Greatest Comic Magazine in the World.” Good for you. And the way you answer some of those wiseacres does my heart good. I’ve just about HAD it with nice, polite editors making excuses for goody-goody comic heroes! I like your unusual and true-to-life personal conflicts among the four – hope you retain that realism. And I like the name Mr. Fantastic. Glad you didn’t call him Stretch-O, Elastic Man, Capt. Rubber, or some such junk. I like the Thing, the full-length stories, etc. BUT, on the cover of FF #3 the Torch had two left hands!

Ronn Foss
Suisun, Calif.

But he DID have five fingers on each, huh Ronn?

Well, that’s it for now. We’re learning a lot from your letters. We’ve learned that you do like the name “MR. FANTASTIC” and that you don’t like it. You do like the Thing and you don’t like him. Well, we can’t please everyone, but we’re sure gonna try. Keep your letters coming, don’t get too angry at us, and always face front!

Let's see, what's the most awesome thing about this issue? The first apearance of Dr. Doom? Thing wearing an eyepatch, pretending to be a pirate? Yeah, it's all pretty great.

So glad that Doom is here to save things.
I'm not sure about Torch turning water into "glass" or his burning down a castle....
I do, however, appreciate that Doom had a jetpack in his first appearance.

So far this is the best issue for me, the 3 Ff men disguised in middle-ages costumes was a great funny idea, specially The Thing as Bleckbeard. Also the coming of Dr. Doom is very special.

This issue is packed with action from start to finish, it has less sub-plot as others issues so far (and sub-plots are most of the time the main plot for me, and what made Marvel good that days), but it is finished in a so round way that I don't miss it.

Also special to not is the awesome letter from Roy Thomas in the letters page.

First appearance of Doctor Doom, The boys going back in time to become pirates, a pirate ship battle involving the FF's powers, The Thing being the Blackbeard of legend, Merlin's gems, a Doombot, Dr. Doom and his jet pack... this issue is amazing!!

I do not like silver age zaniness, but this issue is an exception. The pirate scenes were fun and the final confrontation with Dr. Doom was okay, but the first half of the issue's dialog was terrible in my opinion.

So he's reading comics with the Hulk, comparing him to the Thing who says he (the thing) is no comic book character. But don't they meet the Hulk? It's meta and it's... bad.

Early comics (though the mid 80s) are way to meta. The writers are constantly interacting with the characters. Its pretty annoying.

To me Marvel comics seem like a cosmic soap opera with characters popping up left right & centre in various comics. So it's great to see when all these heroes & villains first appeared. So far we have witnessed the birth of the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Sub-Mariner (silver age), & now Doctor Doom. That is the beauty of this reading order & I am really enjoying it. This is one of the better stories as well.

Well, my son enjoyed this issue; the pirate ship was cool, especially Mr. Fantastic stretching to make a bridge between the two pirate ships. And Dr. Doom is already one of the coolest villains. Mind you, he hasn't had much competition yet...

I agree with Gonzo, but also add time travel and The FF to the list, making it contain FOUR of my favorite things. This issue does not deserve the level of enjoyment I got out of it, and I think it's pretty good even if you don't like those things, in large part due to the fact that BEN GRIMM, THE EVER LOVIN' BLUE EYED ThINg I S F*****G BLACKBEARD IN THE 616 UNIVERSE.

i loved this issue. the best FF so far and the best in the order. i love how the thing totally gets into the pirate thing and i love the time travel aspect. in any other comic it would be just silly. because its a time machine invented by dr doom and because its a virtually invisible rectangle and not a big machine with all gadgets and stuff makes it quite believable. for me time travel is dr who's tardis and dr doom's time travel machine!

I'm not sure which was better; "High Society Thing" drinking afternoon tea while the Torch reads Marvel Comics, or finding out "Pirate Thing" was actually Blackbeard. Fun issue all around, and best story in the Reading Order so far. 4 stars.
