I won't say completely that it crossed the line over to an excellent comic. In the Bronze-ish Age or anything. But it certainly is starting to tackle some of the more realistic problems of the new era - and leave the flashy set of junk in comics behind. It really has become reflective - and while not a big time issue - death, drugs, etc. It does push a few lofty concepts.
Great to see the race becoming an issue - even if it does tackle it in a more than racist under today's scrutiny fashion. It isn't terrible - and that is good to see.
It also has a villain that we don't completely see from the start. Not a TRUE reveal, but a pretty decent comic. Worth the time.

Art is more typical Heck; nothing worth noting. The story is much better than art & the story wasn't awful; more 1970 political commentary. The script was acceptable TOV; there is a huge word count!(2)

We'll be having a few more issues about political demonstrations before the writers are done addressing the politics of the era. This is one of the better ones because Firebrand is trying to make a difference. He's not a villain posing as a rabble rouser.

I actually enjoyed the story, although it was wrapped up too fast at the end, which is typical in 1970. Would have been better as a two issue story.

Enjoyed the story, and a little insight into the events of the 70's and civil rights.

I loved the story, one of the few four stars I've given out. And I disagree with illcom94. I think this part of the story wrapped up in an orderly way, but I don't think we saw an end here, just a beginning. I also like how Firebrand is a creation of white society. Whether he's actually black or not, I don't know yet, but his methods are patterned off of the manipulation mastered by the white establishment prior to and during these turbulent times, and his powers are the result of learning from Tony Stark himself. I almost started to feel a sympathy for him, until I realized the opportunities he threw away. He obviously wasn't lacking for education nor opportunity, since he was not only able to learn from Stark, but had the funds to create his own suit. But instead of using this to try to provide opportunities to others in his community, he uses it to try to tear it all down.

I would have liked this issue to have gone further into Firebrand's story. I'm not a big fan of these political issues, but I'm relieved that this one didn't end with Firebrand being white and/or a tool for some organization like AIM.

I was very impressed by this one - easily the best political story I've seen thus far. Normally we get nothing but blandly moderate politics from Marvel but here both Firebrand and Helene's views are treated respectfully, not as deluded nonsense. (And the fact that the story has a woman - not to mention an African American woman - provide a thoughtful political argument is pretty rare stuff for Marvel.)

4 stars for the 1st app of Firebrand! I've always liked him, and thought his costume was cool!! I just wished they would've used him more, and hated what later happened to him!!!

Cover Me - Interesting that only white people are attacking Iron Man on the cover!!!

Carmex - That one brother might want to go to the doctor. He has blue lips!! (p2,p3)

Snidely Whiplash - You can tell Councilman Bradshaw was going to be evil. I mean just look at his mustache!!!

'Nuff Said - "When a good idea can't make it through the system, maybe it's time to get out of that system!"-Eddie March

Finally a political story that doesn't have rabble rousers as pawns of some white super villain organization. Some nuance in looking at the problem and a strong female African American character!

You know what I like? None of this soul brother business. Black or white, people just talked like people. Was there a difference in how they would phrase something? Yes, but nothing that screamed "I am a racial stereotype".

I liked this outing. I almost don't see Firebrand as a villain inasmuch as I see him as a Punisher-lite. He strikes me as a guy who wants to better the situation of minorities, but uses any and all means to achieve them. I appreciate a character with that much focus; too bad he's not used more after this.

I also liked Helene Davis here. She's a strong character with a lot to say; here's hoping we see more of her.

4 stars. I kinda saw some of the ending to this, that Bradshaw's hands were dirty even if I didn't know how quite yet, but this was a topical story that holds up really well over time.

Of course he is a corrupt politician. What else could he be? Is "corrupt politician" redundant?

Otherwise, this was a fun comic. I like the ones with personal issues or politics, rather than just combat.

This was a great comic. The inclusion of politics and social issues offer a much more complex, nuanced, and personal story than most of the 60's slog.

Bring on the darker, morally grey era of comics, please.
