Issue Synopsis

Above the Earth, a group of mutants, pursued by SHIELD agents, find and attempt to enlist in Magneto’s “cause”, despite having long since given up on his goal of mutant supremacy. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Magneto’s actions haven’t gone unnoticed, as both the Soviet Russian’s and the United States prepare to take action should Magneto return to his terrorist activities. Elsewhere, at the newly rebuilt Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, the reformed and expanded team of X-Men are in the midst of a training session. Two groups of X-Men attempt to infiltrate the X-Men and capture Professor X. One group, consisting of Rogue, Iceman, Archangel and Colossus attempt to breach Mansion security from outside, while a second group of Wolverine, Psylocke and Gambit attempt to enter from below. Both teams meet with failure, with the exception of Wolverine who managed to find the real Professor X in the Danger Room control booth along with Cyclops and Storm. With the training session over, it’s revealed that both teams were actually inside a totally revamped Danger Room.

The X-Men are soon alerted and briefed about the possible threat of Magneto by Nick Fury, and debate seems to be brewing between those who have always thought of the Magneto as the enemy and those who have fought with him and considered him a friend. Professor X approves Cyclops’ suggestion of breaking the X-Men into two groups, one led by Cyclops and the other led by Storm. Back on Asteroid M, when a fight between the SHIELD agents and Magneto’s “Acolytes” tragically demonstrates to Magneto that he can no longer remain uninvolved, he decides to take action. Later, the X-Men are alerted the Magneto’s presence back on Earth and Cyclops’ “Blue Team”, which consists of Beast, Wolverine, Psylocke, Gambit, and Rogue, are dispatch to confront him.

In the Mid-Atlantic, Magneto uses his powers to raise the sunken submarine Leningrad, which he had destroyed years before, in an attempt to strip the ship of its nuclear arsenal. His actions are soon interrupted by the X-Men, who confront him and a fight quickly ensues. Magneto is nearly seriously injured by both Wolverine and Cyclops, but Magneto manages to escape with the nuclear missiles in tow. He is quickly followed by Rogue, who attempts to get through to him as they had once shared a bond. But Rogue is cut short when she is shot down by Russian jet fights, and Magneto subsequently ignites one of the missiles in retaliation. Back on Asteroid M, an injured Magneto is “healed” by one of his followers, Fabian Cortez, who feels that the X-Men’s “betrayal” of Magneto needs to be met in kind.

On Earth, Rogue wakes to find herself in a hospital in Genosha, and confronted by Chief Magistrate Anderson, who informs Rogue that a group of mutants are attacking the city. Rogue soon finds out who when the hospital is blasted open by the Acolytes, led by Fabian Cortez. The rest of Cyclops’ X-Men Blue team soon arrive to save Rogue and an all-out battle soon erupts between both mutant groups. The battle is soon interrupted by Magneto who threatens that not only does Genosha deserve the destruction the Acolytes’ have wrought, but so do any who oppose him or mutant kind. He then declares that Asteroid M would be a sovereign world for any mutant who wishes sanctuary. Meanwhile, back at the X-Mansion, a distraught Moira MacTaggert blames herself for Magneto’s actions.

Not a fan of this. Jim Lee is too frenetic and Claremont is at low ebb, covering territory he has covered before with less flair than the first time around.
