Issue Review
   November 21, 2016
An unengaging story.
False Drama. A lot of the drama here is driven by the idea that Tony’s artificial heart is being rejected by his body. As the central theme of a story, maybe I would accept it. But, as an element of tension thrown as an aside into a battle with an alien? Not so much.
Worldform, Inc. The reason behind the alien invasion is certainly quirky. If this has been an issue of Thor, it might have been developed into something interesting. Here? Not so much.
Secret Identity. Tony reveals his biggest secret to a new cast member. And, it seems like a gimmick.
Marianne Rodgers. For some reason Tony’s girlfriend reminds the leader of the invasion of... someone. So... he kidnaps her. Yawn.

These undeveloped alien invasion stories annoy the piss out of me. Having said that, I still enjoyed this arc--even with the recycled "I'm comin' Elizabeth" plot device and Kevin O'Brian essentially as Happy with a brain.

Except for the identity reveal, this is a pretty standard filler issue alien invasion story.

World about to be destroyed by aliens on Earth. The news is covering the debacle... But where the hell is everyone else?! No Spidey? No avengers or X-Men or DD of anyone?

That really bugged me too. This is probably the most destruction that New York has received in the order so far, but apparently only Iron Man bothered to do anything about it.
I don't think heart attacks are really one of those things you stave off with gumption, no matter how heroic you are.
No explanation of how Stark made it from his car in his armor, to the elevator in a suit? It just happened?
If Tony's old armor with the pacemaker in it was able to fix the issue with his heart, then why didn't he build it into his new armor as well? After the surgery all he was talking about was being afraid his heart would stop and everything, and when that did happen, the solution was simply to put his old armor on.

So Tony trusted the most incompetent, bumbling character both with his factory, and then with his life. Nice.

I'm with TheAmazingGatorMan and duncanm on this one. Did this invasion happen during some annual Superhero holiday season? This is a planet-wide event, but the FF, X-Men or even the Avengers apparently couldn't be bothered to help out. Stark has known Kevin for all of about 4 issues, but reveals his identity and hands him the keys to the company. Also why could Iron Man suddenly kick Ramrod's butt, when he'd had his own handed to him last issue? The trouble with reading issues like this one is that you don't get the time back! Rant over.

I'm having trouble following Conway's writing. It feels like sometimes he just throws words at the page:

-What does it mean to fall to your knees like a gut-sick puppy (splash page)? Do sick puppies spend a lot of time on their knees?

-Why is it ironic that Marianne's boyfriend's name is Tony Stark (page 9)?

-If Kevin suspected that Stark was Iron Man, why is he startled to get his suspicions confirmed (page 11)?

These aren't plot problems, they're scripting problems. A good editor should have caught these lines and fixed them.

2 stars for Worldform Inc. going above and beyond to keep their clients happy!!!

Leftovers - So, there are 4 Changer Robots still left of Earth just standing around...

Kevin: A fine help you are, you senseless filly!

I literally did a spit take. Kevin is a hilarious character.

Check out future Cerebus creator Dave Sim in the lettercol! And what a surprise... He's already needlessly picking fights with letter writers.

I see Kevin getting plenty of hate in this and previous appearances. I actually like him. Like others said, this ish was garbage, but I did love this line from Kevin:

"Lord, I may have called on you before, 'n those times mostly in vain..."

  Katryn Says:

It's not that I think Kevin is a bad character as such, but why should I care about him? Why is he in this story? Sitwell was at Stark Industries as security, Janice Cord was introduced because her father was a loony who hated Stark and then she became the love interest, there was a clear reason as to why they were there. Kevin is just some random that Tony happened upon, gave him a job, then suddenly trusts him with more than anyone else ever! Not even the Avengers know Tony Stark is Iron Man, but this random Irish guy does? And how the hell does he keep popping up at such opportune moments???

Luck o' the Irish of course!

I think Kevin was created to be a replacement in the series for Happy. The way it looks, Kevin was this hard-luck guy noticed by Tony, who offers him a better job which allows him to be a regular supporting character. Then Iron Man gets into a life-threatening situation to where his identity ends up being revealed to Kevin, like it did with Happy, and now Tony has a new confidant. It played out a lot better with Happy, since that development took several months to a couple of years; with Kevin, it was rushed as if Allyn and Gerry were eager to install Kevin in his new role as soon as possible. I don't hate Kevin, nor do I think his character is all that bad, but I don't relate to him at a level where I think he's earned all this in the narrative.

And I'm in agreement with what's already been said about the Changers. Where were all the other heroes like the Avengers or Fantastic Four during a world-wide threat event? Even Thor alone would've made mincemeat out of these guys in a few minutes. And the repulsor rays hardly fazed Ramrod last issue; here, they throw him into a building and that takes him out completely? Uhmmm, no.

2 stars. I don't mind the change in the status quo, but the whole arc that changed it was clumsy and telegraphed.

Of course Tony's girl will be kidnapped by the aliens, even though she looks nothing like the leader's dead love. Is it just that she is female?

Kevin's life just got really complicated. The last person to learn Tony's secret identity wound up an amnesiac super-villain.

Please tell me that we're not returning to Tony Stark wearing the chest plate at all times.

Like the previous issue, there's a kernel of a decent story here, but it's buried under the overblown writing, and lackluster art.
