Issue Review

MrRsBB
   August 2, 2013
Art: this is the excellent style Sal Buscema is known for. Drawings are consistently well done throughout. Jim Mooney is a star in the comic world and that likely has something to do with the great art here. The backgrounds are a bit empty at times. The story is a cornucopia of guest stars facing an unlikely trio. The power struggle match-ups are a lot of fun to witness. For two out of three, I don't think we have seen these guys pitted against each other before. The Roy Thomas script is readable, so Roy had a good month, afaiac. The dialogue was true to each character and there seemed to be very little action announcements. (4-)

I liked the battle seen between the Defedners-1 and the avengers

This is one of those rare circumstances, where the battle amongst the good guys seemed to be somewhat less contrived and actually justified. I enjoyed this one.

liked you comment can.. but its a bit of a stretch too call this a battle amongst good guys? hulk and namor is not seen kindly on by most humans (and avengers)

Art is great, story is great, and I'm really looking forward to the a Defenders now. More so to see how the Hulk is controlled or how he meshes with everyone.

Not bad at all. I'm really glad it was the Hulk's anger that started the fight. The Silver Surfer stays being a condescending jerk. I'm surprised this team up only lasted two issues, but I guess they've been toying with this for awhile now, what with that Doctor Strange arc awhile back.

I'm not 100% sure that it's out of character, but in his own mag Hulk always just wants to be left alone, and in this story, he wants to fight more than anything. Just seemed a little weird to me.
So maybe Strange has some kind of magic to help the Hulk control his temper?

On page 7, the opening panel actually has a note from Stan to Travis.

"A word to the wise: Don't waste time trying to correlate this tale with the current Avengers Issue! No way! -- Stan"

4 stars for Marvel's version of the Expendables!!!

Cover Me - You just know it's going to be good!!!

Semper Fi - I'm liking Col. Willis...he's got some major cojones!!!

Kiosk - It's pretty impressive that they have a Radio Shack on the nearby island...

Bat-Phone - I like it that the UN has a hotline to the Avengers!!

Mighty - Cap says he wants to have the three strongest Avengers on call...but, what about the Vision??

Main Event - I always love it when Hulk and Thor fight!! Actually, pretty smart of Hulk to keep Thor's hammer away from him!!

'Nuff Said - "Give 'em a taste of your joy-stick, Thor--"-Goliath

Guess I'm in the minority here thinking that this is once again a hero vs. hero fight that could have been avoided with decent communication and/or smaller egos. Wasn't really a fan of this one.

I liked this one but... "Don't storm that weather control station, Colonel, a stray bullet could cause a nuclear explosion!" So, of course the colonel storms the weather control station.
"Give us just a few minutes to show you that this station had problems."
"OK lady, but if you blow anything up, we'll kill you!"
So they make a couple adjustmemts...then shoot the reactor with a gun and blow it up. "See? It blows up when we shoot it with a gun!"
"Oh yeah! Thanks lady!"
Huh? Wha? But ummm wow.

I like the rest of this, even Goliath wasn't that much of an arse, and surprisingly useful, but I still hate the Silver Surfer.

The second outing of the pre-Defenders.....errr, Titans Three, made a little more sense this time. However, it seems weird to have Namor working with human scientists, but understand, this does at least fall in line with the eco-crusader slant the book had been taking a few issues ago. And it was fun watching a restless Hulk.

The battle with the Avengers reminded me a lot of Avengers #3, except with the addition of the Silver Surfer. But it was pretty obvious Cap didn't consider the threesome much of a threat if he only sent three Avengers, especially if one of them was Goliath.

3 stars. The last two issues were pretty fun for what we have to look forward to shortly.

The only reasons I gave it 3 stars is for the Avengers and Hulk.

Once more, Namor makes a unilateral decision, ignoring U.N. jurisdiction.

Pg. 19 - General says if anything is destroyed he will order the shoot to kill. On the same page, Ikthon blows up the machine, and the General thanks Namor. Come on! Give us some consistancy.

Johnny71181 makes an interesting comment about communication and egos. I agree, but then we wouldn't have a story. If you read about the American Civil War, you'll discover that almost everyone on BOTH sides were a bunch of egotistical maniacs.

Still, I really enjoyed this one.

Four stars.

Maybe if you didn't spend the first half of the issue belittling the Hulk, Namor, then he wouldn't have been so keyed up and attacked Thor.

I did like that Roy stuck to the characterizations of the three proto-Defenders: They are all jerks who act rashly, and make the *worst* teammates. The fact that this was Namor's book, and that they were the protagonists, didn't change, or even soften this, which was nice.
