A good Harlan Ellison story introducing Jarella, one of the most important characters in Hulk lore.
The pace is fast, and the location is original and novel. We also get to see the Hulk happy and in a position of authority and respect. For these reasons, it stands out as something different as Hulk comics go.
Itís all over too soon.
9/10

This story demonstrates utter disregard for basic quantum physics.

Quite enjoyed it though. :P

Kinda reminds me of Planet Hulk actually. I wonder if this inspired it in any way..?

I love the fact that Bruce Banner with all the power of the Hulk is powerless while the Hulk's strength comes from his resilience to give up.

All the contrived references to the titles of other Harlan Ellison stories do not improve this comic.

This one doesn't live up to the hype that was being thrown around at the time.

I can't wait until I get to Planet Hulk. If this appears to be the precursor, I may quite enjoy that arc.

  Great conclusion to this mini-arc.

In the course of this little arc we get a new species living under the Earth, and a new microscopic world. Is anyone keeping track? I just know there are a bunch of both at this point.
A certain level or irony that the one place that the Hulk was able to find acceptance is a too primitive to have been able to birth him.
Was nice to see Hulk/Banner happy for a lil while, even if he did seem to give up on getting back to Betty way to easily.
Never expected to see SHAZAM! in a Marvel comic, so that was fun.

The first part of this story stunk! This was a blast!

About the time this arc came out was the 20th anniversary of the Fawcett vs DC lawsuit. Anyone know if that had to do with 2 references in a row?

That was a really brutal way to murder that first pig-dog, even for the Hulk.

3 stars for the 1st app of Jarella, who will go on to be Hulk's main squeeze!!!

Credit Due - I wanted to give it one more star, but either Harlan, or Roy's lingo was irritating me!

Inception - So, it looks like Hulk fell into a small world, and then into a even smaller world?! Is Jarella's world a Microverse inside a Microverse??

Knots Launching - Funny image of the Hulk tying those two Warthos tails together and throwing them!!

Torla! Torla! Torla! - Holi & Moli, really?...

Splash - Nice image of Psyklop's hand reaching for the Hulk! Also, later when the Dark God's hand is reaching for Psyklop!!!

'Nuff Said - "Not even when the most powerful hand in the universe is about to give you a mean massage?"-Husky Hulk

I didn't care for this. I guess Essential for 1st appearance of Jarella? This explained none of the crazy pointless plot points from the Avengers ish (Falcon's friend Ralph, the demon statue, why Reed captured Hulk, just for him to immediately be captured by the villian).

Hulk's jumping pose looks kinda funny to me on page 6, bottom left panel. It looks very much like a frog to me.

Well, Betty was forgotten as quickly as she should be.

I'm clearly in the minority here, but I did like this one; at least, I liked what this story tried to do. Yes, essential for the first appearance of Jarella, and her non-presence will add a bit of mystery to the Hulk's history from here on out.

Harlan Ellison's plot to Roy Thomas's script. The two don't really mesh together very well as they could've, as Roy's script didn't execute real well and the pacing was a little herky-jerky. But there were a lot of cool ideas here and it might've been a classic had this stretched out another issue or two.

I also had to chuckle at all the Golden Age Captain Marvel references this story arc used. The statues in the hallway in Avengers #88. "Shazam" in the narration. The wizard Torla's assistants Holi and Moli, who form an expression Billy and Cap used to say a lot.

3 stars. This arc was still fun, even if it didn't live up to the hype it had at the time.
