Issue Review

jfpj1991
   April 16, 2013
This issue had the potential to be a really great story arc, but for me, it fell short. There was way too much going on and the magnitude of the events seemed to be watered down to fit it all in to the pages of one issue.

The writers did a lot of things right. First, they completely nullified the idea that Llyra could have any claim to the throne when Proteus speaks up about the traditions and laws of Atlantis. Ikthon becoming a traitor was not something I saw coming. He was one of Namorís most trusted advisors. The death of Dorma could also have drastic consequences, though I canít say Iím too sad to see her go. She was always disobeying direct orders and got herself in trouble quite a bit.

Overall, the pacing seemed way to broken. Attuma breaking into Atlantis and fighting Namor, briefly, seemed way too contrived. I understand they put it in there to show the Sub-Marinerís fury at having his bride accosted, but they could have displayed this while he battled Llyraís minions or the crab, or even by having Namor beat Ikthon senseless. Instead, by placing Attuma into battle with Namor, it threw the whole issue off for me. I gave this issue a 3/5 stars.

Roy Thomas at his best. I came into this expecting to like it and it still exceeded my expectations. They got Namor's characterization perfectly in a non-standard storyline, and in his own way, Namor conveys real emotion the likes of which are seldom seen in Marvel outside of Spider-Man.

That came out of nowhere, but really, I should have known. Superheroes aren't usually allowed to have permanent relationships, so of course no love for Namor. Great issue.

Definitely best Namor story so far, one of the best overall in the order so far. But I had to take one star away. It was a rollicking action adventure and I was completely into it, until Namor faced his most deadly foe: leeches. *sigh*
One of the few covers that was truly honest about the stakes within the issue.

Overall a good arc and definitely didn't see the Dorma thing coming, but 2 things I'm not buying:
1. Ikthon as a traitor. That was a little too convenient with no indications that he was before this.
2. When Llyra was downed in ish 32, she changes back to Laurie. Why would her mother not have kept her on life support as Laurie or how did she change back to Llyra to be put on life support?

3 stars for what we all secretly wanted to happen!!!

Proteus - Okay, so this should be his last appearance!

Contrived - @sbcolt15: I agree about Ikthon. He was a good supporting character for Namor!!

'Nuff Said - "--the first female to feel my anger shall be--my wife!"-Namor

Strong, emotional ending - perhaps the most I've cared about a character so far in the order besides the important Spider-Man issues. Also, I did not suspect Ikthon at all to betray Namor...

At least Dorma goes out at her best and being one of the only female characters in the Order so far to do anything to help not only herself, but the hero.

On a serious note, probably my favorite Namor issue yet. 4 stars. But, when I saw Namor cure the crabs Llyra gave him, with his mighty rage and awesome anger, I wished I could give it 10 stars. I had to settle for 5, and I'm not usually a big fan of Namor.

What a story. Action, tension, betrayal, and heartbreak. Easily the best issue of Namor since his 1962 revival.

It ended up being the best way for Dorma to go out....by saving the life of the man she loves. It sucked to see her constantly be the damsel in distress, but now that story trope is gone, and with it the worry of striking at Namor through her. It was kind of fun to see Llyra all pissed off when her plan was thwarted via a loophole.

4 stars. Those dang leeches sucked away one star from what should've been a 5-star epic.

Proteus, way to show some logic. Namor and Llyra are not married. I didn't expect that.

Dorma is dead. This is sad.

I must wonder if this will be like Janice Cord or George Stacy, or will she be revived in a few issues.

I liked Dorma and she will be missed.
