Art: Kirby is back and so are the extraordinary machines and backgrounds. We also get several other artists working on this book, but it doesn't hurt the art continuity too badly. Loads of action in a well-paced story...even if a large proportion of the action is pretty corny. The ending was pretty well done....I was expecting one or the other....but not both. Script was pretty good by keeping the word count at bay(4)

The story is a little bit convoluted IMHO. But I love how Buscema draws

I wasn't expecting Kirby back so soon....I just watched Jack Kirby documentary this week & it is difficult not to rank high & feel biased...The King was a genius...this book was pretty darn good, too(4)

Burning off leftover Kirby work makes for a confusing mess.

This would have been better with the flashback as an actual issue, and then bring him back later.

No one else is excited for Anihilus? I thought he was bad arse his last appearance.

I absolutely hated how they awkwardly crammed in that leftover Kirby art. It just did not fit within the frame of this issue at all.

Just a weird issue, trying to shoehorn something into continuity. The Janus from this issue looks nothing like the one from last issue, and Sue's hair grew a good 10-12 inches between leaving Franklin and Agatha, and returning to headquarters.
It wasn't a bad issue, and I thought the story was pretty good, but a lot of weird choices were made. Well, let's see where it goes.

My biggest problem is how Janus got past Reed's security. As long as you get to the top floor, its easy to run into the negative zone? Seems like Reed would have more in place to stop something like that. Especially with all the villains that have flown in through the windows.

I like how Johnny starts apologizing to Ben for being late, and then is startled by Janus's appearance.

Somehow he missed the Janus's large aircraft in the street, the smashed in front of the bank, and the damaged safe door...

3 stars for double the bad guys, double the artists, double the action, and double the confusion!!!

Annoyed - I love the look on Ben's face when Janus first hits him!

No Prize - Sue lost the "4" emblem on her uniform! p9,p3

Zoned Out - I do like Reed having Sue stay invisible until they find out what is going on. Although, she didn't do anything when Janus pulled the gun...

Well that was a confusing mess of blah. Although I liked the Thing in the bank vault. But what happened to them all being grouchy after they finished experimenting on the Thing?

Allow me to try to cut through some of the confusion surrounding this story.

The story of Janus the Mega-Man (not misspelled; bear with me here) was a story submitted by Jack Kirby when he tendered his resignation just after issue #100. The story wasn't finished so Stan deemed it unusable and went ahead with other arcs such as Magneto and Namor, and the "Monster in the Streets." When Stan decided to revisit the Janus plot, he decided to base his powers in the Negative Zone and, of course, renamed him the "Nega-Man", using what he could of Kirby's artwork as a flashback, editing the original dialog, and John Buscema finishing the story via a framing device around Kirby's flashback. The original story, with new embellishments by Joe Sinnott and Ron Frenz but otherwise kept as originally intended, was finally published in 2008 as "Fantastic Four - The Lost Adventure." So there's the story behind the confusion.

The Janus from the flashback reminded me a little of Robert Reynolds. He had that Jekyll/Hyde thing going for him where the tapping of power like that unhinged him. Yeah, Reynolds's situation was more complicated than that, but there are enough similarities here. And of course, with the Negative Zone involved, it was eventual that we'd see either Annihilus or Blastaar. I think this arc will pick up steam now.

3 stars. The story here might've been better if left unpublished since the doctoring wasn't the greatest. But for what it is, it actually was pretty decent.

An entire issue to flashback to an episode that didn't happen. Nice.

Kind of a boring issue though.

I guess I'm in the minority, cuz I really liked this issue. I like the flashback to what was ultimately a minor adventure for the FF. I also thought flash-back Thing was in rare form, and contrasted well with surly current Thing
